Lunch at the K club and sunshine on Leith

The announcement that Celtic had a new manager caught few folk unawares yesterday.

Monday had been the appointed date, but I am told by an impeccable source that things were moved forward after some lunchtime deliberations.

At a table in the K club yesterday afternoon a man with a heated golf course decided to have some fun with dignified heads.

Sevco were in their preparations for their first ever Cup Final and I’m told that the news hit them hard.

Brendan Rodgers is an even greater challenge for the churnalists in Planet Fitba than he is for the Admirable Warburton.

The Irishman has a genuine management pedigree.

Moreover, the Irishman who made the decision to hire him has ensured that he will also have a player budget that will be many many times what the competition can scrape together.

Mr Desmond is happy enough for some of the details of the new budget to become known.

He is in the mood to play with heads apparently…

I’m told that up to twelve players could depart from the first team Celtic squad.

They will make room for up to five players that will raise the overall quality.

Celtic will now travel in a direction as laid down specifically by Dermot Desmond.

For the avoidance of doubt this is not Heated Driveway Productions.

Brendan Rodgers will be in full control of his budget.

My information is that he has been looking at videos of players and reading dossiers since last week.

I would not be surprised of players like Carlton Cole and Stefan Šćepović will have no further involvement with the Parkhead club.

Interestingly, I’m told that Emilio Izaguirre has been told to turn up for pre-season training.

Steven Gerard the ex-Liverpool player gave a glowing reference to Desmond’s people apropos the management abilities of Rodgers.

The Admirable Warburton will now have to put together a squad without any European income or the lure of participation in any UEFA competition next season.

His charges Hibbsed it today at Hampden.

The occasion of their first Scottish Cup Final just got to them on the day I suppose.

This is a shame.

So it will be at least another season before Sevco are in Europe.

I suppose they managed a kind of Brexit today.

That will make my duties next season somewhat less onerous.

The last time The People were on safari in the continent I was regularly onto UEFA media office making enquires about the often appalling conduct on the Ibrox clientele.

So a huge go raibh maith agaibh to the original Irish soccer team in Scotland.

Just like Motherwell last season they have done the state some service.

Today there is sunshine on Leith and next season there will be a cold shadow cast over Govan.

On the occasion of Sevco’s first ever appearance in a Scottish Cup final Glasgow is green and white.

I suspect that The People should get used to that colour scheme on Clydeside.
