The funeral of Rangers

It is always encouraging to see the MSM getting with an issue.

However, late in the day.

This piece from Gabriel McKay in the Herald is behind a paywall.

Here it is in full.

Overall, the cited examples are apposite, and the case for an independent regulator in Scottish football was made here in December 2023.

However, consider the mental gymnastics in this:

“Craig Whyte was able to buy a debt-laden  Rangers for £1 from David Murray before leading the club into the financial abyss, forced to start again from the fourth tier.”

Craig Whyte did indeed buy a football club.

Whereas Charlie and the boys bought assets in a liquidation sale.

Basket of assets and all that.

As the featured image shows, the Herald piece appeared the very day that the original Rangers, dead since 2012, were finally buried.

Awkward…

At the time when Sevco Scotland Limited (later to be re-designated The Rangers Football Club) started in the fourth tier of Scottish football, some in the local media bent reality out of shape to say it was still the club that had used EBTs to pay players.

Suddenly, terms like “holding company vehicle” and, my personal favourite, “engine room subsidiary” were in vogue.

Others in the local media just hunkered down at the back of the bus.

They knew the truth but lacked a spine and needed the paycheque.

Dear reader, for this NUJ member, the adherence to the continuation myth at Ibrox is a red line.

Anyone who crosses it, either because they are cowardly or compromised, simply ceases to be a journalist.

Instead, they’re propagating an Orwellian lie.

  1. Sarah, the uncomfortable truth is the Sevco and the liquidated Rangers FC are/were a part of the fabric of Scottish society. A nasty part of that fabric of course, but a part of it nonetheless.

  2. Craig Whyte is the patsy who took the blame for Rangers demise. But, as the article correctly states, the debt ridden club was already headed into administration and death, SDM merely abandoned the sinking ship. If anyone should incur the wrath of the fans it is SDM. Yes, he bought glory days for the club but in doing so brought them to their death.

  3. ..Holyrood silent for 12 years. Salmond said Rangers part of the fabric of Scottish society. Shameful from Scottish politicians to never investigate this scandal
