Journey’s End at Ibrox?

When the new club came into the fitba world in 2012, they announced that they wanted to “win friends on the journey”.

Certainly, the previous operator of the Ibrox franchise had made more than a few enemies.

The original Rangers operated a discriminatory employment policy for most of the 20th century.

Then in the Murray years, financial doping gave way to a tax scam that was operated by their use of “imperfectly registered” players.

The latter scheme lasted a decade as they tried to keep pace with a rejuvenated Celtic.

It was industrial level cheating which should have prompted the local media to go after the Ibrox club.

Of course, there was little chance of the Succulent Lamb Fusiliers doing anything resembling journalism.

Now, we may be approaching the end of the journey.

One insider stated to me last night that what we were witnessing was a scorched earth policy.

Everyone and everything are being burned as the final scenes are played out.

Firstly, here are some facts that are rarely, if ever, mentioned in the Road Press:

Sevco have no cash reserves.

Since they were created in 2012, they have never broke even, they have always, always made a loss.

Before the lockdown, they were embroiled in several expensive litigations.

When the courts resume, as they nwi8ll at some point, General Ashley will be waiting for them.

Ballpark?

They might owe the big guy around £10m.

Then there is the small matter that the Engine Room Subsidiary is being sued by their erstwhile retail partners Elite Sports and kit suppliers Hummel.

Just to make it all neat and tidy Sevco are countersuing them!

Oh, and there is another wonderfully ironic contractual own goal with Memorial Walls.

Now, that one who will cost the Holding Company Vehicle around £1m.

Therefore, it is little wonder that they might be impotently ranting at the map in the Ibrox bunker.

Apart from a compliant media, the only thing that the Sevco High Command can rely on is the credulousness of their klanbase.

The letter yesterday from the SPFL Board certainly put it up to them.

The Q&A, today from their chairman Murdoch MacLennan, underlines the position of the league body.

Put simply they reject all accusations of “wrongdoing”.

Serious allegations require serious evidence.

I have noticed that the usual suspects within the Stenography Corps are in the “if there is smoke there must be fire” school of credulous churnalism.

For the avoidance of doubt, I have no opinion on the matter except to point out that the onus must be on the accuser to bring forth evidence

The more that this drags on, the more I allow my natural cynicism to kick in.

I noticed that the Sevco High Command have no issue with sending one of their senior chaps to sit on a working group chaired by the Bond Villain of their imagination Mr Neil Doncaster.

Those of us on Planet Reality can readily recall when the same chap was the chief executive of the then Scottish Premier League (SPL).

In truth, he strained every sinew in the summer of 2012 to get a Rangers, any Rangers whatsoever, into the topflight.

He was a double act with SFA supremo Stewart Regan as they tried to salvage a business model built on the “Old Firm”.

Indeed, Mr Doncaster stated then that “there is no mechanism for what we are trying to achieve”.

By that, he meant parachuting Sevco into the SPL to pretend that they were the original Rangers.

That was bizarre behaviour for someone who wanted to do down the Ibrox brand.

None of this appears to matter to the current Sevco High Command.

It is almost as if they know that Covid19 is the final straw that will break them.

In such a scenario perhaps, they are pleased to be inflicting an “incalculable cost” on everyone else ion the Scottish game.

Even amid all that I cannot abide watching a very decent guy getting a kicking.

If Mr Spiers wants to do some journalism around Ibrox then there are plenty of worthy targets to investigate.

Stewart is not one of them.

If the Sevco Managing Director wants some reading material during the lockdown I can suggest something appropriate from the pen of Robert Cedric Sherriff.

The attack by the dirty Hun is imminent and any attempt to Raleigh the troops is futile.

  1. In their last published accounts in 2019 there was a Going Concern notice inserted saying they needed additional funding of £10m to see out the season. One of King’s companies was identified as a source of this funding but crucially refused to give a legally binding commitment to this.

Since then the following negative activities have taken place:

    1. King has walked away and said he wouldn’t provide additional funding
    2. Coronavirus Pandemic. Cost unknown but significant.
    3. Ashley/Memorial Walls/Elite/Hummel litigation. Presumably not factored in as unknown last year but significant.

I won’t say they can’t survive but, if they do, its a greater feat of escapology than anything Houdini achieved.

  2. Not the ideal outcome, but if the bhoys in the corner decide to sing NINE STAR in a row, I could live with that and it’s more than eight anyway.
I want the torment to last for ever and TEN STAR as a follow on would be OK as well.
Perpetual suckers are eternally valued and I would happily offer them plenary indulgences when they accept never ending purgatory.
Hope they don’t get killed off, great entertainment, lovely oranges intrinsically until the pips squeak – and mostly they do that already.

  3. The sale of season tickets by ANY club at this time is puzzling. Well it is for me at any rate. In normal times if you buy a season ticket you are paying up front for a set number of games. But will we have the same number of games after reconstruction?

It’s an easy thing to do with a 14 team league. H&A = 26 games. A split into 2×7. Each 7 playing H&A = 12 games. A 38 game season, the same as now, but will that be the model adopted?

  4. Gent and Hagi’s agent must be biting the ear off Rangers for confirmation that they want the player on a permanent basis and will cough up the £4.5m price tag.
Given the lack of revenue throughout the football world Genk may be looking for a different structure to the usual downpayment, followed by a couple of instalments, perhaps all the cash up front, whilst Rangers on the other hand may want to go down a different and very long path, say tying a chunk of the fee to qualification for CL group stages.
Apparently as we are told Rangers have first dibs on the player surely Gerrard himself could put up the £4.5m then recoup his money plus a percentage of the fee when Rangers sell him on to Real Madrid, Juventus or Inter Milan for £20 without the player kicking a ball in Glasgow.

  6. KJ to ND – ‘ has your relationship with Rangers deteriorated to such a level that your position is untenable’.

Why? Because he has accusations thrown at him without any evidence.

ND should have replied ‘if there is no evidence is Rangers position untenable. They have caused all this and myself and staff have received hundreds of abusive emails and telephone calls’.

Accusations can’t be allowed to get thrown up about with no fear of punishment.

  7. I’m sure I’m not the only person to think this.

In today’s ‘explosive’ interview with ND shortly after saying that he and his staff have been subjected to the most awful abuse my email and telephone ( hundreds a day), he says ‘it’s probably to be expected considering the accusation being made about me without a shred of evidence’.

Rather than concentrating on that Jackson says.

Has your relationship with Rangers deteriorated so badly that your position is untenable?

    Of course ND says No.

Is it is just me or should he have said :-

I’ve done nothing wrong. If I’m proven totally innocent and Rangers have no evidence against me and basically could be sued for defamation of character is their position untenable or are clubs allowed to throw Totally unfounded accusations about left right and centre without fear of any repercussions.

Also what should happen to the club for all the abuse me and my staff have taken as a result of their false accusations clearly based on a Personal agenda.

As usual press all written one way. No wonder never purchased the paper in years. Difficult to read for free.

  8. Gabriel McKay, who he?, leading article with Super Ally’s asterisk against Celtic’s 2019/20 pending league title win.
NB. Gabriel has still to retract from a previous article that he had mistakenly claimed Celtic’s lead in the SPFL, before shut down, as 12 points, when it was 13.
Just the sort of error we have come to expect from the Daily Ranger where facts are often replaced by fiction.
Both Gabriel and Ally steer well clear of the fact that all the trophies won during the EBT years should have been stripped from them by the cowards at Hampden and wiped from the records entirely, asterisks not required, due to financial doping would be the appropriate note.
If memory serves me correctly wasn’t their an article a few years back by their top dog Jacko, as known to his mates, introducing to his readership a ‘ billionaire from Motherwell with wealth off the radar.’
In retrospect Jacko has been roundly mocked for this particular piece but I’m prepared to cut him some slack on this one as I doubt if Jacko actually knows how many numbers in financial terms constitute what makes someone a billionaire.
Smart boy Ally might be but I doubt if left to his own devices that he could spell the word asterisk.
There’s no shame in being short in the spelling deparment, no shame at all and certainly no handicap in securing a top post at Hampden, with equally top lolly.
In an attempt to show that his view was not generated by an anti Celtic agenda he brings in Dundee United and Liverpool into the argument that the asterisk should be applied to them as well, aw shucks Ally, all heart.

  9. Given Park’s lenghty business experience he must be fully aware of the financial situation at Ibrox.
As things stand rock bottom hasn’t been reached as long as Park and the board continue to pump money in.
The consequences of trading whilst insovent will not be lost on the directors and the impact on their other business interests which would follow.
It can’t be easy for them after seeing millions of their hard earned cash converted into equity in a company that has never made a profit in it’s short history, yet their fans are screaming for player investment in the new season.
Investment which, if not forthcoming from the board, will see them under fire from their fans, irrespective of how many millions they have already blown.
That’s gratitude for you whilst their former leader has removed himself from the front line and returned to South Africa, far enough away from the fray to ignore the pending cries of anguish and still be celebrated as the man who saved Rangers.
Perhaps in the course of time that particular narrative will change but don’t hold your breath on the Scottish media leading the call with the press full of apologists and willing to print any gobshite handed down to them, whilst BBC Scotland has single handedly recruited a host of former EBT recipients to give us their unbiased views on the game in Scotland.
Does those funds go directly to HMRC to reduce the former player’s EBT liability or is that left to the individuals?
Just asking for a friend, and in a similar vein did part of Ogilvie’s SFA pay off go directly to HMRC to wipe out his liability or did he just bank the lump sum and has come to a monthly arrangement with the tax man?
Again just asking for a friend.
Of course Campbell could always turn to the wifey for assistance, if needed, in the shape of those Rangers and Hearts shares that he signed over to her to avoid any conflict accusations when he was top dog at the SFA.

I am always and have always been skeptical of anyone saying that the huns are going to go bust again, even when it was proven to be the case last time, they have always been able to pull strings behind the scenes, be it secret or not, I have never underestimated the power of Freemasonry in Scotland, and the rangers club which has historically used its masonic ties to influence the path of Scottish football to its own benefit at the expense of others, but any club or company that keep losing more money than they are taking in eventually will reach a point where enough is enough no matter who they are or know ,if this was any other club they would have been finished long ago, however I get the feeling that they are really running on empty and indeed this is the last hurrah before going down, blaming everyone else of course just like that last time, and telling us through the media and all their pals in high places that we need them for the good of Scottish football, etc etc etc, so maybe the Corona virus has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, weeding them out in a way that could not be done by the honest people in our game.

I hope to heaven it is so, that they are finished and if it is may they rot in Hell

  13. Their is something odious about slurring people’s good names and then saying we will dictate the terms of handing over the evidence to back up our slurs. No police station would initiate the investigation of someone without evidence. Rangers are effectively putting the cart before the horse.
The arrogance of Rangers is breathtaking. They have no right to question probity and integrity in the Scottish game having engaged in industrial scale tax evasion over 9 years. It would be comical were it not factual. Not one person in the media has pointed this out. They need to grow a pair and stand up to Rangers.
The only place Rangers should be making statements is on the pitch. But they know fine well they are light years behind Celtic on the pitch. Their is not one Rangers player in their squad would start for Celtic. You have their odious fans hoping the pandemic will help them level the financial playing pitch. They truly have no scruples.
If Steven Gerrard read FollowFollow and still took on the job at Ibrox he must be bonkers. Their fans are unrepentant bigots. The anti Catholic anti Irish sentiment on that page is sickening. The worst thing I’ve seen on KDS is Rangers fans being called huns and Rangers being referred to as Sevco/Newco etc. Not ideal but a world away from the sickening nonsense on FF.
Curiously enough on Gersnet their is a post anticipating the potential for economic carnage for Rangers. Not a hint of it on FollowFolllow. For a club who’s fans bleat on about we are the people and the high standards they not only aspire to but apparently practice, the must be the perfect practising definition of ironic.
While having Old Firm games is good for TV in Scotland, because of their lack of dignity and humility I hope Rangers cease to exist. The Club and fans are truly horrific. Long live Celtic.

Having watched Scottish football for nearly 60 years, and witnessed the disgusting behaviour of both Rangers and Celtic, as they both put themselves first at the expense of everything and everyone else. The idea of a competitive league is a myth, and neither OF team would have it any other way. Of course, money has always been the overwhelming factor separating the teams throughout Scotland, but the OF have always made sure they were at the front of every queue where cash was concerned. With the OF, it’s always been about them, and the rest can fight over the scraps. Disgusting. Your OF have single handedly destroyed Scottish football. You must be so proud. Scottish football is near death, and soon your rich club won’t have anyone to play against on a Saturday….. How does it feel to be the ‘best’ club in your one club league?????

    Scorched earth indeed.
If most of the proxy votes are in before the end of next week then there will be no need for a grandstanding meeting on the 12th May.
King may have to cancel those business class tickets for the journey back.
Most sane people will be hoping that a very big black eye is about to given to Rangers and their media monkeys.
Bribery, corruption, bullying, bent even, all words being printed and voiced by the Scottish media even though they are not privy to the Smoking Gun secret dossier.
It’s times like this that you have to question why the Scottish football media will print anything handed down to them from Ibrox without question.
Some of these guys are not as stupid as their fawning articles would have you believe, so whats in it for them?
Is succulent lamb still on the menu? Murray should have been vilified for his role in the liquidation of the former club/company/thingy yet he walked away with scarcely a bad word aimed at him from the media.
The EBT scandal, knowingly selling the club to Whyte, knowing full well of his business history and also having been warned by his own Ibrox board following an investigation they had commissioned.
Of course, as was made clear at Whyte’s trial, Murray had been incentivised by the bank to get rid of Rangers, he did well and got a £1 from the Bellshill billionaire with wealth off the radar, his reward from the bank came in the promise of the bank to sell him back part of MIM, Murray’s original love child.
This should have been splashed all over the front pages but curiously hardly ruffled the feathers of the Scottish media.
You have to ask the question why would that be?

  16. The FIFA Chairman of its Medical Committee has been on the BBC news warning all associations that they cannot resume leagues if there is the risk of one infection taking place. One infection is too much.

Someone from the English FA/Premiership then followed stating each game behind closed doors required 300 people. Each of whom would need significant administrative support; covid free meals, toilet facilities, multiple tests, pre and post match secure isolations, rooms, bedding, until the next match, etc… this includes camera crews, the laser ball system operatives, officials, coaches and trainers, neutral observers, etc…

Each game would require one disinfected ball only and clubs would waste time kicking it into the stands If they were ahead whilst the goalie went for it. Children could not be used as ball boys.

    It all looks impossible.

I agree one infection is too much.

Without that tub-thumping rallying call of stoppping 9 I suspect the grim reality would start to sink in for many of them and without a perceived insidious plot by peter lawell to fight I suspect season ticket renewals would fall off a cliff leading to some very awkward conversations with Close Brothers.

How can you take 11 years to do 10 in-a-row?

I know, I know, Sevco logic! But they will claim that there is a gap in the run and so you have to start all over again from season 2020-21.

Whether we win the league on the field of play or awarded it through merit we will clinch 9 in-a-row this season and I will enjoy it whatever the means by which it is delivered.

      Hail! Hail!

    • But if they did then, sevco fans would then recognise this current season and say that when we win next seasons the count goes back to 1 rather than 9. There’s no reasoning, with the sevco’ s level of desperation. Their only end game is to halt the 9 and 10 and they will try it now matter what. Their ‘tainted titles cos we weren’t there’ should tell you all you need to know.

  19. It does look like the big hoose of cairds is tumbling.

I am unsure that an administration process, pre-pack or otherwise, could work as most of the debt is to directors who will have to effectively write it off in the knowledge that the same business (I know, I know) has no means to deal with the liabilities coming down the pike such as Big Mike, Memorial Walls, Hummel etc, leaving those directors even more vulnerable to those liabilities.

Only a liquidation process could remove those barriers as the business will have ceased to trade. However, it is vital that if this happens and a new company is formed, that the Scottish football authorities insist on a name change – perhaps Glasgow Rangers – and they start again as a new club with a new badge wherever the rules stipulate, be that in the third division or the junior leagues with no claims to the history of the old club, or indeed the elder of the two clubs. This is vital because, as Angela Haggerty once dedicated an article, the word Sevco does matter.

Interesting times ahead so be sure to stock up on jelly and ice-cream!

Season tickets walking out of RIFC PLC to CIC CLUB1862 would be a criminal act.

      Reply
    • Administration / liquidation would not be an easy option. Firstly major creditors including King, Close Brothers and Ashley will be fighting for their money and could be in a position to block the potential exit from administration. I’m not a lawyer and couldn’t say what happens with secured loans (e.g. Close Brothers) in the event of administration.

Hiding or siphoning money would be highly suspicious and would lead to the Directors being accused (at best) with trading whilst insolvent. Taking the money and then going bust would infuriate the fans if their tickets were not honoured, alternatively you have a new season where season ticket income has vanished by day one. Some of this is sounding quite familiar!

Finally, would players be able to ‘walk away’ from their existing contracts and, assuming they qualify, when would the new club be allowed to compete again in Europe? Without a billionaire in shining armour, Rangers will be light years behind Celtic.

      Reply
    • That wouldn’t give them much, financially. 80% of the season has been played – that leaves 20% of “unused” season book money. Let’s be generous here, and say that their season book costs £500. 20% of that is £100 per book. Their den of iniquity holds 50,000, so that would give them £5 million to play with, but first of all, sevco would have to reimburse those ST holders from their own offers. Since the expected shortfall to season end was anticipated at £10 million (before any litigation, etc), exactly WHERE are they going to find this money? This is the straw that is expected to break the camel’s back.

Hearts, Stranraer and any others must wake up. They are being duped into a destruction end game. Only here in Scotland and only during a pandemic could Sevco be the vile creature to roll this out. To say it all collapsed not just Sevco.

I have read the SPFL Chairman’s replies to earlier printed Sevco concerns (thanks to the daily record mouthpiece presstitutes). Everything the SPFL did was legal, approved by a QC, and in the interests of struggling clubs going bust.

It wasn’t the SPFL rushing things, it was penniless lower league clubs in lockdown expediting the process for lifesaving cash. No one was railroaded, it was the club members doing the railroading.

Reading the complexity of loans, the risks and the admin requirements including securities, such an idea was always incompetent and plainly silly. Any club going bust meant resultant prizemonies would be lower due to losses.

In my own mind, it’s really up to clubs, beyond prizemonies, to go to their Owners, banks and the market for funding to get them through a covid period.

The Government should not fund sports clubs. They are the last companies in the national interest.

    • Am sorry mate but just because they get the word of a QC, doesn’t mean everything is above board. Lord Nemo Smith inquiry?
Now we know Sevco are it but the SPFL & SFA can’t be trusted.

      • All decisions made and actions taken were in compliance with the companies act and SPFL rules. The QC was engaged to assure that.

Do you have evidence to the contrary?

        • Under SPFL rules the board had the power to call the League without any vote. The only reason I can think of for having a vote, is that calling the League without one might have impacted on commercial contracts. I don’t know that for a fact but it’s a possible explanation.

        • A QC ( born and bred in Glasgow) and a specialist in Taxation and a Senior Partner of a law firm in Edinburgh at the 1st EBT Tribunal and a QC ( Celtic season ticket holder) at the 2nd Tribunal ruled that Rangers’ use of EBTs was legal It took the Court of Session and the Supreme Court of the UK to rectify their mistake. Atter the 1st OK verdict when asked for her view a Celtic supporter said that she was not surprised as “where in Scotland would you find 2 Law Lords to rule against Rangers.” Manya true word is spoken in jest. Nimmo’s view that spending money doesn’t help you get success in football will be disputed by Man City and Utd, Liverpool, PSG,Barcelona,Real Madridand Bayern Munich et al and, indeed, many of their opponents.

  35. At a time of crisis, there are always opportunities to learn and adapt.

We could be about to witness a magical rebirth of senior, Scottish football. (Stick with me here…)

Could you imagine if there was no Ibrox club at all – to fill the Scottish papers, TV, radio – including all the BBC outlets – with its continuous flow of nonsense, rabble rousing and general negativity?

Could you imagine a reconstituted SPFL – and SFA?

Could you imagine a professionally run / outsourced referees’ association?

It could/would totally rejuvenate the whole Scottish game, IMO.

And it’s all perfectly doable, if the senior clubs are willing.

    It’s not rocket science, it’s just football…

    • This is exactly what I hoped as we approached the death of the oldco. The notion that someone could buy the name and crest of the club and then pretend they never died didn’t occur to me at all! I thought we were going to be beginning a new era, where the midden would be converted to flats or a hotel and the fans of the dead club would go follow their local sides, giving them a boost in terms of match day income. If they tried any of their bigoted shite they’d be shouted down and within a generation or two the bigotry that has blighted Scotland would be pretty much eradicated.

Well, how wrong could I be? We did indeed begin a new era, one that was even more toxic than the last!

      • Don’t count on them being shouted down. There’s more than one club in Scotland that hates all things Celtic.

Their fortnightly hate fest at the septic tank is a release valve for their fury, and much as I loathe that club, possibly even more than the original, the thought of 50,000 rabid orangemen wandering around on match days with an extra £50 or so in their pockets to spend on drink doesn’t fill me with delight.

IF they die, that could be the prospect. IF other clubs were to refuse the blue/orange pound.

I believe it’s more likely that the numbers attending will begin to dwindle naturally if they continue to fall on the field of play.

  36. Hey Phil,

Normally I would say, “Beware of men with Surnames for Christian names”, but this Murdoch MacLennan seems to be on the, erm, money.

    Hail and Hail Again !

    • Murdoch is a perfectly good first name deriving from the Gaidhlig name Muireadhach. It can also be anglicised as Murdo.
