Organisations are human communities.
It appears that it is hard-wired into our species that once we coalesce into a group we start to create a self-defining culture.
Football clubs are organisations of a sort.
Since 2012 the klan have rather protested too loudly that Sevco is the original Rangers.

Constructed from the body parts of the deceased club Charles of Normandy set about assembling a suitably recognisable match day experience of the klan.

It is undeniable that the snarling sense of entitlement and Herrenvolk hubris have TUPEd over from the liquidated club.
I was thinking of this when comparing the two very different goal celebrations at the weekend.
As a sociology undergraduate over four decades ago, I was introduced to the extensive literature on socialisation.
Rangers captain Terry Butcher did not grow up in the klan culture of Ibrox.
Thankfully the love of a good woman stopped him being one of The People.
Today, happily, he is just a person like the rest of us.
However, by his own admission, he was drawn into the klan culture of hatred.
That is a powerful example of organizational socialisation.
Now, I don’t know to what extent Alfredo Morelos arrived at Ibrox with an attitude problem in his luggage.

My suspicion is whatever was there when he signed for the basket of assets has certainly been nurtured at the stadium John Brown played for.

Yesterday he just couldn’t score a goal, but he had to abuse the Motherwell fans.

For the avoidance of doubt, I’m sure that the home crowd might have not been without fault.

However, the professional footballer has a duty not to incite spectators.
Later on in the day,at Parkhead, Jeremie Frimpong opened the scoring in a tough match against Hibs.
His celebrations were of pure joy and not viciousness.

As Henrik Larsson’s next-door neighbour Martin once asked me in a taxi in Lisbon:
“Why can one city have two sets of fans that are so different?”
The Swede was in the Portuguese capital to take part in the 50th anniversary of the 1967 triumph at Stadio Nacional.
I’m a writer so my first port of call for a suitable analogy is usually a novel.
I tried to explain the history of the Billy Boys by way referencing the work of another Larsson- Stieg.
It was useful to bring up the character Harald Vanger from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Steig Larsson wanted modern Sweden to face up to the reality of its history.
Martin was saddened to learn about the existence of that racist gang and its eponymous leader in 1920s Glasgow.

However, he was truly horrified that this shameful episode of Scottish history was still being fondly remembered in song by the Ibrox crowd.
Sweden, like Scotland, has its own dark fascist past although I suspect that the Swedes are more open and honest about it than Fair Caledonia.
Billy Fullerton’s racism still echoes around Ibrox and I believe that it can infect players who are not originally from Planet Fitba.
Even if they do not pick up on the anti-Irish racism and hatred of Catholics the central message of nativist entitlement can be intoxicating.
The young Colombian must now know that there is a certain tolerance of his violent conduct because he turns out in the Norwegian Blue of Sevco.

As Terry Butcher has attested the process of acculturation can be largely unconscious.
At some point, Alfredo will move on and find new employers.
Hopefully, he will move to a club that has better values than Sevco.
Admittedly this is not such a tall order.
Once the values of his new home seep into him then one day he might celebrate like Jeremie.
At that moment joy will replace spleen.
It is an open secret that the Sevco High Command are desperate to cash in on their striking talisman next January.
For the young Colombian’s sake, it would probably be for his long-term wellbeing.
As for young Frimpong?

Well, he knows that he’s in a good place at the moment.

I see the media and selected pundits are attempting to throw a ring of protection around the Colombian nutter.
Contrary to some reports any items thrown in his direction only occurred after he had ran to the Well fans to give them a big GIRFUY.
It appears that many are trying to make a case in his defence, again wrongly making claims that he was being racially abused.
The referees are already treating him differently by ignoring the amount of fouls he’s allowed to make without being shone a card.
No doubt come their visit to Celtic Park there will be Celtic players at the wind up, no doubt aimed squarely at Morelos.
What we have witnessed so far in his time in Scotland is that he can’t handle it and is guaranteed to react.
Hopefully there is a ref in charge that is prepared to step outside the party line and show him a yellow or red card as appropriate, rather than a clown like Beaton whose performance last season, and with his after match partying, should have seen him sacked on the spot but hey, thats not how things work at Hampden, they must look after their own, no matter what.
Can’t be seen to be upsetting those Lanarkshire refs can we?
Joe,my guess is we will be forced to endure Brother Clancey on the 29th but hell, what difference does it make, they’re all as bad as each other unless anyone can prove differently.
Hail Hail.
Did you see the performance of the main stand linesman last night?
The BT pundits were pissing themselves laughing when he flagged Griffiths offside as he ran onto a pass back from a Hearts player.
Then the penny dropped and he put his flag down. Just the sort of performance that will see him climb the greasy SFA pole in quick time.
What a pile of guff in this piece.nonsensical in fact..you could flip it on its head and say Morelos behaves this way as he grew up in a catholic country..(less manners .more emotional/animalistic) less civilised than Protestant Frimpong Netherlands one of the most egalitarian countries in the world..of course this statement is also baloney .. simply pointing out that humans are pattern seeking mammals and if you want to find one you will ..re supporters from the same city being different.. they are not ..they support difffent tribes but ultimately (or mostly)work and drink together, marry each other ..and have the same characteristics and social hobbies..they are only kept apart until adulthood due to a 19th century policy on schooling..Morelos sure overreacted.but again a glass bottle was throwing at an injured gers player this evening..at the same ah erm stadia were last year one was physically confronted..but I digress that’s getting going down the my da’s bigger than yours tit for tat..you could go round the whole of the UK and find incidents at most clubs..and politically if your parked on the left pole.. you’ll soon find something to get your primary knickers in a knot about..

stessano,just to be clear.
My reply at 06:44 was directed at the individual who caused you so much anger.
I was going to tell him his history, just as you did,but I couldn’t be arsed wasting so much of my time on him.The sad thing is there are thousands like him who share his neanderthal views.
Hail Hail.
As Phil would say………..Oh dear !
Morelos has scored 27 goals this Season so far.
Those who seem to think he won’t be sold for more than £10m are deluding themselves.
I reckon they will get £12m plus a sell in percentage from possibly Everton or another Premiership Club in need of a poacher and goals.
I’ve said it many times they only need to get lucky once in the market to press reset.
He will be a major loss to them but Defoe is capable if given good service and judging by the service they are getting down the left side it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they could keep pace with us this Season.
Take off the Green tinted glasses Bhoys this is no walk in the Park like we have witnessed these past 8 years or so.
Barry McKay was going for the same.. 8 mullion 10 mullion some zombies on radio SNYDE said he was going to RB Leipzic for 15 mullion.. Deluded!!!
The Columbian Chris boyd will go for about 5 mullion Dembele Dollars AKA pound sterling 🙂 will be undisclosed when the Columbian cheat eventually goes so not to upset the Zombies.
Ai don’t doubt Morelos is worth that valuation, however any potential buyer will be aware of the dire cash situation at Ibrox and pitch low
Everton bought Onyeruku who we had been linked with when he was playing in the Belgium league. They where not able to get him a work permit for two consecutive seasons despite him scoring goals in Belgium and Turkey. They had to cut their losses by selling him so why would they risk more money on a player they would have to take to the FA appeal panel to try and get a work permit?
You’re forgetting it’s a fire sale at The Crumbledome, anyone in their right mind knowing Sevco are in deep will not pay what they don’t have to £6m absolute tops, and they’ll be lucky to get it
There’s no doubt that medium-level goals and performances in Europe against the likes of Legia, Young Boys, Feyenoord and Porto will have registered, although a barrowload in qualifiers will not be.
His profile will have been raised but high profile failures, both in terms of lack of goals and poor discipline, will perhaps register more.
A £10m punt is small beer for EPL clubs but I still think that he can’t do it in the biggest games in Scotland and isn’t in the Top 10 strikers in Colombia, on top of question marks against his temperment will mitigate gainst him.
A move to a EFL club may be a better option; Leeds create a barrowload of chances but their conversion rate is poor. He would still struggle in the EPL (IMO) but, at least, he’d have 6 months to get up to the level, assuming Leeds don’t blow it again!
I seem to recall that rangers knocked back £19 million for Nicky the Jellyfish, and eventually punted him to Everton for £5 million. What makes anybody think somebody is willing to meet sevco’so valuation for Moreorless? Colombian coffee is not that expensive, is it?
Off topic…and going over “old ground”…but I feel it needs to be said.
Whilst our Board can correctly point us out to a secure and healthy financial situation…and to on field success …it also has to be said that,in certain other areas, they have come up miles short.
Their response to the Res.12 issue has been an absolute disgrace…No other words for it.
Their acceptance of the John Beaton ” pub incident “…is totally unacceptable and they should be ashamed of themselves.
No other footballing country in the World would have tolerated this shocking set of circumstances…but we have.
Their lack of comment to Collum’s ” blind eye ” treatment of Morelos in the LC Final is just another example of how spineless our Board is.
Morelos should have been yellow carded twice…we all know that…but had it been Broony…?
Oh sorry…that’s my paranoia kicking in again.
Finally …I will concede that they have tried to sort out the problems with the GB…but its not working.
So grow a pair and deal with it for once and for all.
Any benefit we get from this section of the support is out-weighed, massively, by the ill will they are now generating…and the harm they bring to our Club.
As I said a few weeks ago…my Grandson now has my ST…and with youth on his side he’s not as bitter and angry with the Board as his old Pappy.
Hopefully he will never have to feel that way.
On a brighter note…
Phil I hope you and your family…and all the contributors to your blog…Have a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Prosperous New Year.
Phil…I am curious as to how you came across Terry Butcher’s ” Road to Damascus ” conversion.
My vivid memory of his playing career is…
The had lost to us at Celtic Park and our Manager ( Billy Mc Neill) was being interviewed on TV.
Butcher came into the area behind Billy …then walked on and almost took a door off it’s hinges with fury.
Big Billy, it appeared, briefly considered going after him…but good manners prevailed.
I am not questioning your comments…I just wondered where you found this information.
Cheers.
Butcher said it himself in an interview.
As I remember, Terry Butcher gave an interview a few years back during which he talked about the prevailing culture at “The Rangers” and how he felt himself being dragged into that mindset. If I’m recalling it correctly he did, as Phil said, credit his wife with pulling him back from the madness and he has stated that it was an unhealthy atmosphere that permeated the Crumble Dome/
Thanks guys for response to Butcher query.
I was not aware that he had been led from the darkness …back into the light.
There’s hope for them all I guess.
https://thecelticblog.com/2018/10/blogs/in-scottish-football-some-types-of-bigotry-are-more-acceptable-than-others/
The Twitter interview is at the bottom of the above article.
Thanks Steven…eye opener.
Morelos will need deconstructed then reconstructed after a move to make him normal. What club wants to do all that?
This latest UEFA Green Brigade fine for Celtic is evidential of a perpetual situation of misbehaviour. They cannot regulate themselves. They cannot change.
The club must decide to shut down their section and spread them out throughout the stadium or simply ban them outright. Returning that area to fully seated and putting regular fans in there is a must. Simply allowing things to go on like this is incompetence by the Board.
The Age of the ill disciplined green brigade is over.
If you say so, sunshine. 😉
Phil, many many congratulations on calling out a cracking prediction on the Collymore Link after your alf/ Frimpong post.
You said that Belfast would have a Nationalist majority and Glasgow would vote to leave in the Indi vote.
Absolutely spot on.
Chapeau x 3
Have a hatrick of doffs on me !!!
Braga is worth £91.6m
Copenhagen is worth £31m
That’s the difference winning your Group Stage makes!
There’s eejits in Sevco who think angry Alfredo is worth more than the entire Copenhagen squad!
“It was also announced yesterday that Celtic have been fined more than £13,000 after supporters let off flares during their Europa League victory over Lazio in Rome.”
“The Scottish champions were handed a fine of €16,000 (£13,378) following a hearing of Uefa’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body.”
“It is the third fine Celtic have been fined for crowd behaviour this season. They were fined €12,500 (£10,450) for incidents against AIK in Sweden and €15,000 (£12,540) for banners and chanting in the home tie against Lazio.”
£36,500 can go a long way buying kit for kids or the Celtic Charities. It’s just all too much from these GB nutters. you can’t put a number on the shame and embarrassment and detriment to club brand.
If its an economic arguement you want then the Green Brigade have contributed far more money for good causes than that.
Also, what about the 10s of millions lost to the club by not challenging malpractice in Scottish Football.
and lets not forget a CE who earns multi-millions despite the above and failing to back managers leading to 2 successive CL failures.
Oh how droll!
Whataboutery at its finest.
Why don’t they do the good stuff without being Tossers at matches? Being charitable doesn’t give you law breaking rights.
The Board backs all their managers to the best of their ability.
Celtic Were put out two CL challenges by clubs with one third the value of the Celtic squad. Hardly not backing the manager. Rodgers was to blame for AEK Athens and Lennon for Cluj.
You started an economic arguement and then cry “whataboutery” when its demolished. Enough said.
If you think that Lawwell doesn’t bear a lot of responsibility for CL qualifier failures by not signing high quality players last year eg McGinn etc and not signing players early enough this year, so that they weren’t up to speed for Cluj then you’re terminally deluded.
Totally agree with you comments re. Lawwell…..BUT…
What’s that got to do with the unacceptable behaviour at times of the GB ?
Is it two wrongs making a right….?
Is that your defence…?
Surely one fud in the set-up is enough ?
They’ve cost the club 90 season tickets there. I suggest cancelling 90 of their season tickets for remainder of season.
Two wins this week and there is a 5 point gap between the Champions and the Ibrox cIub.
I don’t think they are able to fit their game in hand in before the split so they will come to Celtic Park at the end of December looking to avoid that gap increasing to 8 points and effectively ending their challenge.
There will be no way back and the spectre of 9 IAR will be staring them in the face, not forgetting a quadruple treble.
Selling Morelos is likely to solve their immediate financial issues including Sports Direct but he provides 50% of their goals and will be sorely missed though if he gets sent off again before the split potential suitors will either look elsewhere, or heavily discount his asking price because what he gets away with in Scotland wont be tolerated by match officials elsewhere.
Lol loving the fact of how they are still hurting over on FF about losing the league cup final . Apparently everyone has it in for their club nobody likes them. I thought their mantra was (no one likes us we dont care ) . They are having some serious meltdowns over there everyone from refs to the SFA the media every other club SKY the BBC . Oh dear apparently this has been going on for a number years their club being cheated right left and centre of everything. But to them the worse bit of cheating was last weekend cup final . As the advert goes I’m luvin it . Let’s get further away from them in league in the coming weeks scud them at Parkhead by 4 or 5 goals and watch them press the PANIC button .
Lol at the KLAN mob that are in charge of the Glasgow Evening Ranger . Any negative comments on that paper’s comments section on the KLAN the poster find themselves bammed for no reason other than telling the truth . I have even e-mailed them asking the reason for the ban but no answer is ever given . But they allow their own kind to post all day about child abuse . The quicker this so called newspaper goes down the tubes the better . Even KLAN base supporters of this paper could not save it .
The worrying thing for me, is that some of the Sevco hoard will be teachers, doctors, airline pilots and air traffic controllers to name a few among them and yet, as highly educated as they are they choose to believe court proven lie that Rangers survived the liquidation process. Perhaps it is a form of controlled schizophrenia which only lasts a couple of hours on a Saturday. They say two things rise to the top, scum and cream and “Rangers” new and old have had their fair share of the former in the boardroom as well as on the terrace. Answer to why that should be, probably lies in the your article but maybe it has to be that way. The Protestant religion, as the name suggests, is an organisation for protest. It is an “anti” thing and therefore it has a target it must malign and in doing so it has become malignant and getting worse. The main driving force at Ibrox seems to be fear where the board and the players literally fear the fans and it seems to me to be all pervasive. The recent unpleasant episodes involving the Sevco board show the class of these people, or lack of it thereof. As far as the players being terrified I think defeats by Celtic bring out the worse. Kent punching and Halliday attacking Brown during one match was a cry for forgiveness towards the terraces. However, I remember as a child having great admiration for one Eric Caldow, a Ranger’s captain who seemed to purport himself in quite a dignified manner and I was quite proud to have him in my football card collection showing him staring purposely into the wild “Blue” yonder. I don’t know, maybe it was just better hidden then.
Charlie, I protested against apartheid in South Africa, Ulster and Palestine. I didnae need tae malign the ruling elite. Their own behaviour condemned them. Klan celebration in victory has a need to humiliate – its pathological, its historical and its complex. Joy of success is simple and life affirming, it does not need a ‘victim’, it’s pure. What I’m trying take say is that as a Protestant protesting supporter of Celtic I’d just like ye tae watch yer terminology. We Celtic supporters are better than that. HH Lewandowski
Lewis, I genuinely do not understand the point you are trying to make, given your own description of a ” Klan celebration” as you put it, however I will apologize to you personally if I have offended you.
The Protestant movement were “anti” the authority of Papal supremacy. A bit like Res12 group Vs the Celtic board; those in “charge” think they know best and sometimes a group get together to question that.
I met Eric Caldow through business many many years ago…He had retired from football and was a Rep. for a Plastering Company.
Around the same time …Bobby Shearer was back to bricklaying.
These were two guys who played at the top of the Scottish game…and captained their Country.
How times have changed.
I found both of them to be nice guys.
I met Bobby Shearer at a stag night back in the 1970’s. He was a pal of the Groom’s father and one of the funniest guys I’ve spent an evening with before or since. He spoke of the infamous 9-3 defeat to England at Wembley. The fullbacks were himself and Eric Caldow. The keeper was Frank Haffey of Celtic.
Shearer, “The durty bastarts deliberately used an orange baw! They knew me n Eric widnae kick it n Frank widnae haud it.”
He told me the same story Charger…and a few other choice ones including Wee Wullie Henderson being set up by a clique involving Alex Scott the then Ranger’s winger.
Now that was a story.
The celebration by Morelos was very similar to that of Neil Lennon’s as Hibs manager at Ibrox a couple of years ago. Not big, not clever and no matter the provocation, not necessary.
I am no apologist for Neil Lennon…but to compare him to this idiot is unacceptable.
Death threats…assaults on the streets of Glasgow…and Tynecastle Stadium…coupled with hatred being spewed out on Social Media…I think puts his reactions on a different level to Morelos…who is just a surly, bad tempered wee git.
I’m really surprised that you thought the two worthy of comparison.
The Hun culture sucks them all in and plays havoc with their true persona.
Speaking of which, I was just wondering that if in the 6o’s when our gallus Celtic support dubbed the bluenoses as “Huns”, if we had called them “Philistines” instead, then would the modern day bluenose be telling us that the word Phillistine was a sectarian slur, or the word Barbarian even.
They really are a very strange breed indeed.
This reminds me of a discussion with a fan of the dead club many years ago. He couldn’t name a single song from the Ibrox hymn sheet that was of a bigoted nature. The thrust of his arguement seemed to be that this was a retaliatory action to the songs voiced by the Celtic support. I asked him to name the bigoted lines in The Fields….”Fuckin Celtic fans sing it!!”….okay!!! What about You’ll Never Walk Alone?……”Fuckin Celtic fans sing it!!”
I then asked what would happen if the Celtic fans adopted the old West Ham anthem I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles. The reply basically boiled down to “If fuckin Celtic fans sing it, it’s bigoted!”
When I tried to explain that it was the content of a song that made it bigoted and not the singer, I quickly realised that I had more chance of talking sense into a dog turd lying in a Govan street.
Unfortunately, I truly believe that is the mindset of upwards of 95% of them.
That second sentence should have read, “was NOT of a bigoted nature.”
Oh my days!! The celebrations of both day and night – one enlightening and joyous, the other very dark indeed.
I touched on this very point only a matter of days ago, when I mentioned the antics of a certain fried-chicken loving fisherman and former professional football player, who went on to take his ad-hoc James Galway impressions to another (nasty) level. We have also witnessed the likes of Bilel Mohsni (whatever became of him?), Joey Barton, El Hadj-Diouf, and other incarnations of evil-personified in the blue shirt of sevco. What I find most ironic was Stevie’s recent statement about wearing a suit, shirt and tie when in the dugout, to emanate an image of dignity. Oh, how i laughed at that!!
Well,it would save him changing out of a tracksuit for his court appearance ! Hail Hail
The thing is Phil he still wont change his game . The Scottish mug press are sticking by this clown between yesterday and today . Yesterday it was McCann and Derek Ferguson on radio shortbread sticking up for this madman as well as Gordon Dalziel radio snyde. Dalziel was shot to bits though through Mark Wilson who called it out as it was . Then you have the BOOZE JOCKEY jackass Jackson in the daily ranger today sticking up for the madman . Even his own player Ryan Sack stuck by morelos as did his manager in blaming the ref on the situation. As it is with Klan always someone else to blame they never hold their hands up to anything . I would say embarrassing but it is the BENNY’S we are talking about here .
Mate I beg you to drop this woeful BENNYS chat. Also, why the uppercase KLAN etc?? Please stay away from the caps and the dreadful BENNYS patter. It’s driving me and some others mad.
Tottally agree mate it’s shite patter
Scudmissile, just stop posting.
His disciplinary record previously was actually good, which suggests that the indiscipline that he now displays is due to the culture in which he now performs.
https://www.transfermarkt.com/alfredo-morelos/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/338962
Who’d a thunk it?
His disciplinary record as far as cards go had improved this season, but only because he’s been constantly ALLOWED to foul by the match officials. FOURTEEN fouls against Celtic should have had him off the park. Several BOOKABLE fouls on Sunday before the first card. This has been the pattern every time I’ve watched him this season. His personal discipline – sly kicks, stamps and persistent diving in attempts to con the ref and/or get a fellow pro into trouble – has not changed but his treatment by the match officials has.
You’re missing the point mate – check his disciplinary record from his previous 2 clubs on the link above. It was significantly better than it is now, even with the help of Scottish referees not booking him as often as he should be. It’s a clear indication that the culture at that club has had a strong effect on his behaviour, and not in a good way.
I see via Twitter, that Sweden have banned fireworks this new year , a terrific gesture in the current global warming/ climate change issue.
If you believe that, your as gullible as the sevco fans! Look into why they’re banning them and look at the new year in cologne a couple of years ago. Climate change my arse.
Sevco raise players’ disciplinary issues when they want to push them out the door on the cheap without honouring contracts. Joey Barton and Kenny Miller come to mind.
There’s a x100 evidence of disciplinary problems with Alfredo than any others. If SEVCO want to bundle him out the door with no compensation then there’s a plethora of bad boy evidence.
Brilliant comparison. The joy of just playing a game versus the folly of playing to a tune.
Great article, Phil. A huge contrast between two young, talented footballers. One who plays with a smile on his face, the other with a permanent scowl. One who easily makes friends and the other who has no trouble in making enemies!
