Only two weeks until there is a Rebellion

Two weeks tonight curtain will raise at Websters Theatre and once more it will be time for Rebellion.

The crew have been flying in rehearsals.

Here is a review from 2016.

Well, I reckon if a Jambo can approve of the play then it has wide appeal!

I’m honoured that the Sweet For Addicts theatre company has decided to put the play on again.

It was written especially for them to coincide with the centenary of the Easter Rising three years ago.

For the avoidance of doubt, this isn’t an amateur dramatics group.

Many of the people who play their part in the company are trained professionals.

Their mission statement is impressive:

Sweet For Addicts is an organisation involving people whose lives have been touched by addiction and have used the arts as a cathartic therapy.

The people who perform with Sweet For Addicts have connection with addiction through themselves, a loved one, friend, acquaintance or a family member. They could have connections through knowing these people or be addicts themselves but the most important part of the organisation is that the Arts are seen as part of their recovery.

That recovery allows them to participate in an activity designed to examine the humanity of man whilst enjoying the company of people who have similar stories to tell and hopes to share.

Moreover, they deliver on stage, time and again.

Like “Hame” in 2015, I wrote “Rebellion” especially for them in 2016.

I hope they take that as a compliment from a grateful playwright because they really should.

Our first collaboration was in 2014 when they performed my Donegal play “Flight of the Earls”.

FOTE had premièred in Donegal in 2005 and had then toured down the west coast as far as Mayo in 2007.

Those were professional productions, i.e. everyone was being paid.

However, what Sweet For Addicts did with my piece in 2014 far surpassed anything I had seen previously.

They brought in a professional accent coach to turn to lads from Scotland into highly believable denizens of Letterkenny.

After that, I was sold on these folks.

Their attention to detail and fidelity to the script honoured my art.

So if you’re within marching distance of Websters Theatre in a fortnight then you have a great night out on offer.

Tickets are available here, but they’re going out the door rather fast.

Abú!
