International break

So that’s the international thing done with for a while.

The poorly led “Tartan Army” retreated in some disarray from the Astana Arena on March 21st.

Scotland manager Alexander McLeish EBT is what happens when your association is not fit for purpose.

Now, we know a bit about that stuff here too.

Last night in the AVIVA tennis balls sent a message to Delaney and the FAI.

After they had been picked up Conor Hourihane served up a bit of quality on 35 minutes.

Advantage Ireland.

As ever, the lads in green gave it everything.

It was a good pressing performance that knocked the Georgians out of their stride for most of the game.

Of course, the CEO of a club or a national association should never be the story.

Martin O’Neill once wisely observed that the game was “about those who play and those who pay”.

If John Delaney survives within the FAI structures after Mark Tighe’s (@marktigheST) excellent scoop in the Sunday Times then we’re truly fekked here.

Hopefully, the Oireachtas committee can do the business on this one.

After all, the FAI receives public money through Sport Ireland.

The international break was also an opportunity for the…ahem… “tiny minority” of Narne Arne fans to show what they think of Catholics.

The IFA issued a swift condemnation, but the Layalist worldview at Windsor Park remains an integral part of the match day experience whenever that non-country plays.

Sadly, it is a core element of their “kulchurr”.

Last night James McClean was on the left wing for Ireland and on the right side of history.

The last time I was in a stadium with the fans of the Statelet’s team was at the AVIVA some years ago.

It was an international friendly against Scotland.

It didn’t take long before the klan song sheet was out.

I had a clear vantage point from the press box and what was being belted out was clearly audible.

In fairness, the Scotland fans had a brilliant response:

“Are you Rangers in disguise?”

Quite so…

During this hiatus in top-flight domestic fixtures, some of the chaps on the Glasgow sports desks have been hard at work on Operation Sell Alfredo.

However, he didn’t give them much to work with.

Did he?

A hefty transfer fee in the summer for the Colombian is vital to what passes for financial planning at Sevco.

A win for Celtic on Sunday will end the season for the basket of assets.

That should be motivation enough for the current Celtic manager.

A man who represented the statelet and was booed by their own fans.

The official narrative is that it was a tiny minority that night in 2001 in the match against Norway.

Totally unrepresentative of a statelet set up in 1922 on a sectarian headcount.

  1. The long suffering Tartan Army has the solution to the managerial mess in their own hands.
Organise a ticket boycott for the next qualifier at Hampden against Cyprus and Maxwell and his board will quickly get the message if less than 10,000, or less, cough up for the game.
No use bumping your gums about the situation without backing it up with action that directly impacts on the SFA’s turnover.
There already should be questions getting asked about the salaries some of them are drawing down as well as why is it necessary to have 2 organisations , SFA snd SPFL, running, or ruining, our game?

  2. No surprise to see our media let us down again.
Plenty of talk about the stress and strain placed on McLeish from the pressure of the Scotland job but not a single reference to his huge EBT liability which must be equally, if not more, stressful.
Our media continue to dance around facts that for reasons known only to themselves they are reluctant to put into print.
They and the SFA hierarchy are a match made in hell.

  3. So the word on the street is that McLeish gets sacked today.
    Recent results plus health concerns!
Ffs it was obvious from day one that the man wasn’t well yet those feckin clowns at Hampden, you know who you are, hired him anyway.
At least his pay off will go some way to allieviating the stress caused by the huge EBT tax bill.
If, as reported, Petrie and McCrae were the Kingmakers then they should be following him out of the Hampden door otherwise the next appointment will be tainted from the start.
Where is Maxwell whilst all this is going on?
He’s supposed to be a leader yet again is there any surprise that he’s been an abject failure if Petrie and McCrae were involved in his recruitment?

  4. Yes,one rule for ‘Timmy’ but another for themselves, reeks of hypocrisy and double standards.
I understand James McLean had to make a public apology for a tweet typed out when he was a 15yo,now,let’s see how long we have to wait for the ‘talented’ singers of an awful song,a song that really doesn’t have to be explained in any way whatsoever, before there’s an apology.
An apology that will never come…
    Thank you Phil.
