NUJ statement supporting Angela Haggerty

I was heartened to see the NUJ come out so strongly in support on Angela Haggerty today.

You can read the statement here.

Angela’s original “crime”, in the eyes of the klan, is that she edited Downfall in 2012.

Many bestselling books are controversial.

However, I do not know of another case where the editor was also targeted.

Of course, Ms Haggerty is hated by the klan for more visceral reasons.

She is a Catholic of Irish heritage and she won’t sit at the back of the bus.

Sadly, that is still a cultural crime for too many in Fair Caledonia in the 21st century.

If the denizens of Planet Fitba want to know why the reportage on matters Ibrox is so craven and venal then cowardice plays a role.

Quite simply the big macho types on the sports desks are terrified of the klan.

In the years since the book was published, I have seen several journalists in Glasgow buckle under threats from the Ibrox klanbase.

If journalism cannot speak truth to power then it cannot serve the public interest.

Shamefully, it has taken a young woman from Bute to show them how it is done.

However, she cannot shoulder this burden alone.

That is why I am proud of my union today.

I hope it will encourage other journalists in Scotland to tell the truth about matters Ibrox without fear or favour.

  1. Yet again the SMSM act like the three wise monkeys, but with less collective brain cells. I am old enough to remember when the media reported news, not try to massage level 5 dogma, all to the benefit of what is now a deceased football club. All streams of media in Scotland should hang their heads in shame, not because of the “succulent lamb” tag, but their inability to impartially present factual news and not twisted ideology from their poisoned minds. What a sad little country Scotland is, so much to be proud of, yet way more that brings shame.

  2. Your totally right Phil. There is a horrible dangerous beast living inside the soul of this rancid club. People are being beaten up and stabbed on match days, streets are being urinated upon, hate songs bellow loudly and proudly yet our journalists tell us Scotland needs this club as if it’s something we should all be grateful for. An unhealthy body will produce putrid scabs on the outside. Inside this body lives the disease of Freemasonry, making condemnation impossible, allowing cheating and rule breaking to thrive, the monster revealed for all to see.

    • The original club had no soul. They sold it to the DEVIL shortly after birth. The evil seeping out of every pore of the beast currently residing in the dome of debt is a direct result of that sale.
