Signs of the times

Last night road side adverts appeared across Glasgow.

The electronic billboards stated that Celtic are back in the Champions league and it feels great!

On the other side of the City, I’m afraid that The People are not having such a great time.

One of the many things that currently irks them is the recent wallpapering job at Ibrox.

They had hoped that it might be temporary.

Well, it might not.

However, despite the outrage from the fans that the glass stairways will be hidden from view, it is a minor issue.

Papering over the crackpots if you will….

The reality is that the stadium that John Brown played for needs a major upgrade.

You will recall that the fine folk at the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) saw fit to call an emergency meeting about Ibrox last December.

An emergency meeting.

We only know this because your humble correspondent submitted an FOI request, which was granted on appeal.

When Mike Ashley had his guys in the building they commissioned a report on the place in November 2014. that story back then.

For the record, that was broken on this site back then.

The headline figure of that report was that to bring both Ibrox and Murray Park up to a “no snag list” condition would take between £18-£24m.

Yesterday, an impeccably placed source told me that fixing the Ibrox roofs at current prices would cost in the region of £15m.

Other upgrades required at the stadium would require a further £8m.

Now, the Holding Company vehicle is indeed fortunate that they have Mr David Cunningham King , a man of vast personal wealth and deep love for Sevco.

£23m will be no problem for the South African based entrepreneur.

For the avoidance of doubt, Celtic will receive a cheque from UEFA greater than the sum required to fix Ibrox.

Meanwhile, all roads lead to Paradise.

Just follow the signs…

  1. In these politically-correct the times, has the expression “putting lipstick on a pig” been usurped by “putting a shroud on a coffin”, hence the atempted at improving the vista of general area of Edmiston Drive?

  2. Irvine Smiths words can still be heard echoing round the empty corridors at Ibrox.
Failure to heed them would be unthinkable would it not?
For a Club that seems so desperate to hold onto history you would think the last thing they would want to do is ignore such a major part of it and tempt fate once again?
Fan safety must always come before finances.
Actions in recent weeks confirm this tobe the case at Celtic Park.

  4. Have to hand it to Celtic in the gruelling heat and coming off the back of having to play on two artifical surfaces in the space of a week was a big ask and they suceeded. added to this was the fact the defence was make shift and consisted of a mix of out of sync players and young players learning the trade.
You could sapping of the players due to the travelling and the demand and now its complete look forward to the resting and the domestic competitions. I am glad Calum McGregor is not in the Scotland squad and it is merely selfish reasons i wish more would be dropped but it is what it is and we move on. Good to see more signings regardless of the sature or age of the palyer in it bodes well for the furture. Well done celtic and look forward to more great evenings.

    • The cherry picker invoice will be settled in June 2018 as season tickets are auto direct debited against ex fans wishes.

      10 month invoicing.

It’ll be back soon to take the illegal screens down.

  5. Glasgow city must celebrate the Celtic achievement of winning entry to the Champions League group stages.

Buildings and bridges must be lit up Green and white. All public bodies must forward official congratulations.

Celtic’s achievements puts Glasgow on the map. Brings business to the city, brings fans to hotels, shops, bars, restaurants… beams Glasgow globally on tv and improves brand Glasgow.

In contrast Sevco and the corrupt SFA drags glasgows international reputation into the gutter (with the press).

  6. Once an Ibrox chairman sat inside a stadium
Underneath a roof where the rain flowed free
And he said as he watched and listened to the Billy Boys
“I feel at home here at Sevco FC”.

    “Won’t pay my bills here”
    “Won’t pay my bills here”
“You can default on the bills here with me”
And he sang of the Sash and the Famine and the Billy Boys
“You can default on the bills here with me”.

In came a roofer offering an estimate
“Can’t take a chance with the fans’ safety”
“How many rand have you got in your tucker bag?”
“I’ll need some cash upfront for my fee”.

At this the crooked chairman nearly had a heart attack
“Are you trying to take the piss?”,said he
And he showed him the door after he had gave his arse a whack
“I’ll only pay if you work here for free”

Suddenly a crack was heard high above his cranium
Down came the roofs on him – 1,2,3
Now his ghost can be heard in the ruins of the stadium
“You can default on the bills here with me”.

    “Won’t pay my bills here”
    “Won’t pay my bills here”
“You can default on the bills here with me”

  7. Old Ibrox really is an ugly edifice.

A cack handed salute to a rubbishy architectural period.

I wish the Celtic chasm would open up and Ibrox would tumble in.

  8. I was wondering why the journey into town this morning was twice as long as usual. Bad weather, nope, just a lot of bumps as the electronic signs switched on last night had an adverse effect on the driving abilities of many of the road users this morning.

  9. The glass stairwells at Ibrox have listed building status.

You cannot just cover up listed buildings with whatever you fancy.

Local Authority planning approvals for the materials and designs of coverings of listed buildings are required. Together with a justification why such a prominently public facing listed building requires to be covered up.

I suggest a FIA set of questions to the local authority governing Ibrox, requesting to examine copies of the Ibrox submittals and council planning approvals for the glass screens.

The screens clearly look ugly and more appropriate graphics should have been used such as a realistic photograph of the original glass squares facilitating the illusion of no screening at all.

There’s clearly better brains out here than at Ibrox.

    • D’oh! Why didn’t they think of that?

Leave them alone. Stop showing them up as thick.

Can we get the Celtic team huddle laser beamed onto prominent Glasgow landmarks? George square cooncil HQ, Armadillo, ……

    • What is the duration of the planning consent for the temporary coverings? What planning meeting minutes are available with approvals? What is the council allowable period until corrective buildings maintenance is completed? Three months?

    • You can search online for local authority planning applications. Only three came up for Ibrox Stadium – two for the 2014 Commonwealth games and one dated 1998. Google, Glasgow City Planning Applications for the search page.

  10. Instead of paying for Glaziers King got in a Glazer to try unsuccessfully to put a shine on the jobby. Meanwhile Glasgow is Green & White, and Celtic fans and players are looking ahead to the challenges on foreign fields.

    • How much to put temporary stands at MURRY park or even hire a decent stadium?
But the Big House (bar L as far as I was ever told growing up in Glasgow) must stay open even if it is falling down
