The long road to equality

For the avoidance of doubt, the need for the Orange subculture to feed its supremacism craving hasn’t gone away, you know.

The people of the Bhóthar Gharbhachaidh still face the prospect of a triumphalist march through their area.

Thankfully, they are not alone, and this is not a small local issue.

This long read from Seán MacBrádaigh on Substack, “Drumcree exposed the failure of supremacy – not the failure of Irish unity”, is worth your time.

Full disclosure: Seán was my editor on An Phoblacht back in the day; for that fact alone, he deserves your support!

Here is mine from a couple of weeks ago when the Drumcree situation came back onto the agenda.

Sadly,it wasn’t the first time I have written about the issues caused by this supremacist subculture, and I fear it will not be the last.

Here is mine from 2010, yes, SIXTEEN years ago.

I realise that to many good folk on Brexit Island this entire issue might seem baffling, as the Queen put it in a private conversation, “this silly marching business”.

Sadly, history is always with us.

In this case, it is Scotland’s first colonial adventure, the Plantation of Ulster.

Based on a 17th-century land grab, Loyalism and Orangeism mark out territory with flags and emblems, and it matters hugely to them.

Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Israeli flags are also very much in demand in Loyalist areas.

As well as decorating lamp posts, marching is also part of asserting territorial dominance.

Anyone who thinks the Drumcree protest is about 35 mainly old men harmlessly returning from a church service hasn’t been paying attention.

This sums it up rather well.

Jim Allister KC MP said the Police should have “sanitised” the Garvaghy Road to enable the Orange march to go ahead.

“Sanitised”.

Dear reader, always believe people when they reveal themselves.

Apparently the honourable member for North Antrim has now used another word.

Good grief.

Meanwhile, an embattled community just wants to be left alone.

That seems to enrage some Christian men.

It is almost as if equality terrifies the Sash Cloud…

  1. Good grief, sanitised, shocking does not come close. I have never forgotten the young celtic fan who got his throat slashed in the early nineties close to celtic park,God rest his soul, that was when I started to come to my limited understanding of the nature of some of these people. I cannot help but wonder will the bitter bigoted hatred of the Catholic people ever go.

  2. Have they no green electric buses they could use to quietly and peacefully travel the whole length of the Garvaghy Road, there and back? That would be sanity and clean, even in Jim’s wee tormented mind. Can’t help wondering what other bad news this distraction show is concealling from the public gaze. Any more lack of awareness of any allegations in the pipeline?

  3. This proposed march by 35 bowler hatted orangemen at 8am in the morning, with no flags, banners or music was nothing more than a trojan horse. Next year they’d be back, with their lambeg drum and flutes playing anti-Catholic tunes and causing massive offence. No more orange parades through nationalist catholic areas. These days are over forever. Onwards to Eire Aontaithe!

  4. We can not let these madmen again drag their knuckles along the roads of Ireland ,
The days of bitter wee men in bowler hats and stupid sashes are for the past ,
Anyone with an understanding of the horrors of the past can not let this festering scab burst. Ireland will be united ,my father never lived to see it but I hope I do

  5. Instead of presenting 35 old men as victims, the news organisations should be asking them “but why do you feel the need to march? What is it all about?” In doing so, they will present to the wider audience the inbuilt supremacism on display. Too many people are being fooled into thinking the residents are being unreasonable because they won’t be “sanitised” or let a harmless wee walk pass through.
