Homegrown love

When the curtain comes down on the performance art tonight at Celtic Park, the brief hiatus to Fitba hostilities will almost be over.

Like his captain, James Forrest is that rare creature in the era of the player-trading model- the one club man.

Despite the best efforts of everyone at Celtic, yet again, they’ve been roundly beaten in the Close Season Cup.

Once more, that coveted trophy is next to that old bike in the Ibrox trophy room.

I caught up yesterday with a well-placed source, and he confirmed that Celtic remains in the market for a goalie who meets Brendan’s requirements.

He said that although outgoings would mainly characterise the next couple of weeks, he expected another THREE first-team starters to join the champions.

Given his position in the fitba firmament, I take his assessments seriously.

So, he confidently predicted that the recruitment team at Celtic were working on the acquisition of a new netminder, a left back and a central midfielder.

Apropos the first position, Dominik Livaković remains the number one target for the Parkhead outfit.

One sticking point seems to be the sell-on clause.

I’m told that a fee of €9.5-€10m is not too rich for Celtic’s blood.

Other ball-playing sweeper keepers are available.

Of course, none of these delicately balanced negotiations will be concluded to the toddler timescale of the average fan.

That which is truly worthwhile is usually the product of head down hardworking determination, which brings us back to wee Jamesy.

I hope that my Basque cousins have an enjoyable time in Paradise tonight.

Although some travelling from there for the game tonight might be cheering on the home side.

Euskal Herria is a special place and home to extraordinary people.

Those who proudly stand under the Ikurriña are always welcome at Parkhead or here in Celtic’s spiritual home.

We have gallant allies in Europe.

I hope that Celtic’s homegrown hero feels the love tonight.

  1. For years I wondered what that flag was, as I regularly saw it fly over the jungle, I’ve only recently discovered it’s origins

  3. Your phrases and title are interesting, “Homegrown Love” and “Homegrown Hero”, both, I know are accurate but also thought provoking. As a child of Irish emmigrants to Londan many years ago, I’ve always considered myself as Irish, It would be interesting to hear what people in Glasgow think of such “notions”?

    • I’m from Dublin, you can’t erase hundreds of years of DNA in a couple of generations. For better and worse – you’re stuck with us – you’re IRISH!!
