Uncommon insight

It is always a moment of celebration when some joined-up thinking emerges from an evidence resistance subculture.

To this end, this shaft of insight from that nice young Jonny McFarlane on the Seco Review should be applauded.

Scroll to 39 minutes, and they are discussing the capital expenditure on  Edmiston House.

“Rangers, who are in a constant war with their bitter rivals Celtic, have less seats in their stadium.

That is a gap  every single year financially that Rangers have to make up.”

Correct!

For the record, Celtic Park has a capacity of 60, 411 and the stadium that John Brown played for has 50, 817.

That’s a difference of 9,594.

Moreover, once sold, those extra seats also generate additional spending for every home game regarding catering and merchandise.

Fergus McCann knew that a rebuilt Celtic Park would give his club an annual financial advantage over Rangers.

Once the new stadium was built, David Murray countered with a creative policy towards paying taxes.

You know how that ended.

I noticed that the young Sevco chap doesn’t allude to the fact that the Parkhead club has vastly superior commercial deals in place.

Moreover, the Celtic brand itself has an allure that the Ibrox franchise cannot get close to.

A recent example is the success of the Origins shirt.

Another of the quintessentially British contributors mentioned the UEFA sustainability ordinances.

This new dispensation could consign Sevco to a second-place purgatory on Planet Fitba.

Now, suppose the unique selling proposition of the Sevco matchday experience is nativist supremacism. That is enough to have the Ibrox klanbase choking on their bigot burgers in Edmiston House.

  1. The London tavern won’t be happy if sevco turn the old sports shop into a pub and for extra revenue will their tops and shorts be covered in patches for new sponsors. Would like to see celtic bring the main stand up to the rest of the stadium and add more seats for extra revenue show sevco how a properly run club does it.

    • Apparently that’s already been costed out at around £90m so not going to happen in the forseeable.
Might get that hotel/museum though, I believe the planning permission is in for that.

    • That’s what should happen and the time is now it would drive their fan base mad and give their management another headache to deal with. What’s going on on the Hotel front there is another source of income that had been mentioned time for the theodolite’s to be put on the ground and get it started.

  2. Rangers excluded from cinch logos at thier stadium…. As per https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12634697/rangers-excused-from-cinch-sponsorship-deal-after-scottish-professional-football-league-agrees-new-terms
But at away games – they have own logo board for tv interviews to avoid “cinch” logos
So while EPL managers appear with “cinch” logos behind them, and all but sevco SPL managers doing same… youtube, sky, bt, viaplay offer sponsor eyeballs…..
But sevco dont…. Thier manager/player interviews have “spfl” stickers…..
    Class act? Not!
Can you highlight this background interference……

  3. Also worth noting that Rangers director John Bennett has a first charge over Edmonton House, so it is an encumbered asset. Or does he own it now, and Rangers rent it?
