Eilidh Barbour

Ms Eilidh Barbour has done a very good thing Indeed.

She didn’t sit on her hands and endure a hate fest.

Instead, she walked out and told her Twitter following why she had done so.

The Times carried this piece on the incident today.

After I read this I contacted a buddy who works in a major media organisation.

I asked him if he was aware of the content of Mr Copeland’s repertoire at the event.

Dear reader, I like to think, at this stage of my journey, that your humble correspondent is reasonably unshockable.

I say that in sad resignation rather than as a boast.

However, what he told me did produce a sharp intake of breath.

Moreover, I now fully understand why Ms Barbour walked out and would not expand on her reasons for doing so.

When the story broke sound people stepped up.

Kick It Out are a fine organisation:

The good old boys at the SFWA should be sick with shame.

For the avoidance of doubt, the apology isn’t enough guys.

Not nearly enough.

For starters, whoever booked Mr Copeland for your event should relinquish any position that they currently hold within the SFWA.

However, I don’t think that the ex-criminal defence lawyer will be running out of bookings as he is apparently held in high standing by the Ibrox klanbase.

Nor convinced?

Then check this out.

Dear reader, if you’re surprised at that then you’ve not been paying attention in Fair Caledonia.

So, total solidarity with Ms Barbour for calling it out.

It should be stated that not all parts of journalism in Scotland are as catastrophically backward as the sports chaps.

  1. “former lawyer” indeed.

Whilst we know that Scottish football lags behind the rest of the world in many ways, and whilst the attendees were absolutely correct to walk out…

I just wonder what Eilidh Barbour thinks is most important for the Scottish Football Writers: equality or honest reporting?

Anyone associated with, or a member of, the SFWA is not someone many footy supporters would have any time for.
