A contemptuous appointment

When football clubs do not listen to their supporters, it rarely ends well.

In the immediate aftermath of the Celtic AGM, the suits in the boardroom would be very well advised to take notice of this unequivocal message:

Higgins will forever be associated with the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

I described it here as providing work experience for state functionaries in a totalitarian regime.

In effect, that legislation allowed ordinary football fans to be criminalised.

The Act was repealed on 20 April 2018 after a highly successful grassroots campaign that pointed out just how unjust and workable the Act was.

Bernard Higgins was at the sharp end of that law.

Was he the only available candidate for the Parkhead job?

Was he?

If the Celtic board wants to send out a message that they have utter contempt for the club’s support, then this appointment is an excellent way to go about it.

  1. If the man has ANY self-respect he won’t accept a job where the vast majority of those involved with the club, i.e. the fans, neither want nor trust him.

  2. Oh and our Board took 150 days to replace Lennon – over at Ibrox they had several candidates and appointed in 10 – yes 10 days. The comparison is so stark its embarrassing. I have given up my season ticket until there is change. I love Celtic since I went with my Dad first in the 1960s. – but I will not tolerate our current selfish, incompetent and out of touch leadership. They are scandalously shocking.

    • Our board wasn’t fishing in the pool of unemployed managers who were ex=players,

There’s absolutely no comparison, We replaced Rodgers quicker and our manager didn’t hide from his first game because it looked too tough.

The utter nonsense some of our support come up with is astounding.

  3. I think the one “name ” from the list that is due a huge shout out is…
    The Ticket Office !!
Well done to the staff there for their support.
Will hope there are no repercussions.
    Terrific gesture.
    Hail hail.

  4. Arm chair support would help the Celtic trust with a £5 a week so as in all there names go about buying up shares to be Abe to force who runs our board this will take a few years but its the best way to get a foothold with this power we can also say how much of player sales go back into the club also if we control dividends you will soon get rid of the money men if they don’t get anything back or awarded share each year

  5. Presumably, Higgins was “annointed” in the Hampden showers on Saturday – with no other candidates considered…?

After the ludicrous recruitment process around Lennon, Howe and Ange, the Board still refuses to learn from its mistakes.

We don’t need any distractions off the field this year. 😦

  6. This surely proves, for once and for all, that the Board is so far out of touch with the support that it is both embarrassing and unacceptable.
A shot was fired across their bow at the AGM…but in typical fashion…it was ignored.
This, however, will prove to be a huge step forward in ” fan power “…and I am confident that Higgins will not be working for us any time soon… or ever.
There is no way that DD et al can afford to ignore this surge of protest.
    More power to us.

  7. In the words of Jock Stein “Without fans who pay at the turnstile, football is nothing.” I personally find no surprise in the fact they would employ someone from such an entrenched loyalist organisation, they have been colluding with these types for long enough for their own ends.

Money is the only thing that hurts these people in power, no matter the banner or silence, by their presence on match days the board win.

  8. Celtic Plc do not understand the depth of feeling here. Fans groups coming together could well be a thorn in the side of an aloof executive.
    Good, count me in.

  9. The Board genuinely do not care about the fans and thus the club. Compare this with an Ibrox Board that puts 25m yea 25m of its own personal money into their team. Genuinely ask yourself which Board has done more and perhaps do I respect more ?

    • Jeez I’ll bet that last bit was painful to say. It hurts ME reading it. MOSTLY because I can’t pick a hole in your argument. It’s obvious who cares more about their club.

      • it hurts bad to write it but from others replies deep down we know its true. It’s so so so sad. Being on the Celtic Board is a privilege its not a “job” you take a salary from. You are a custodian for the current and future, a preserver and creator of history for our club. I would put money IN if I was on the Board. I use the Ibrox Board as the comparison to emphasise just how disgraceful our Board are. It really hits home because there is no hole in my argument. I’m actually ashamed of our Board and Lawell – he took out personally millions a year and oversaw the run down of our squad post Rodgers – all for his ego and bank account.

  10. Wow that’s quite the list, if they’re daft enough to ignore this, well; they deserve everything that’ll no doubt come afterwards.
The board at Celtic FC are as well as actually being on Mars, given the ever widening gulf between them and the fans here on Earth.
A board so removed from reality must be removed from office before they do any more damage.

Back the team, Sack the board.
