Swede dreams are made of this

Well now…

The final whistle at Ibrox there was the sound of  £30m in Champions League revenue being kissed goodbye for another season.

As I had written earlier today, the riches of the Group stages would not solve Sevco’s shaky finances.

However, the Malmo manager  John Dahl Tomasson was entirely correct in the pre-match presser to state that the current entity at Ibrox needed the CL monies.

The current Rangers would need that for three consecutive seasons to deal with their underlying financial problems.

So what now?

Bringing in some cash from player trading would be the smart move for the Sevco High Command.

Of course, there needs to be a willing buyer in the first place.

Let’s say that Alfredo is sold for, say,  €6-8m.

However, it would most certainly be put out as a non-disclosed fee.

Then  I would expect that the in-house PR superhero would brief the usual succulent stenographers that it was actually in the region of €12-€14.

The reality is that no reasonable offer for any of their sellable assets would be dismissed out of hand now.

This new reality was even briefly discussed on the BBC post-match podcast.

Mr Gerrard will find out now just how much the Ibrox klanbase really love him.

The next fixture against  Dunfermline takes on a new significance.

Perhaps Stevie G’s charges just find the presence of the home crowd at Ibrox not to their liking.

Last season the Sevco did very well when Ibrox was empty.

Is there something off-putting about the klanbase?

Of course, I couldn’t possibly comment.

  1. Sevco fans are disappointed with their teams performance,as are all who support Sevco.
There problem is not with the team, but believing the SMSM who have printed and said so much garbage about Sevco.Several performances last season if watched without blue specs, and referee assistance, were not that impressive. Most teams had good chances against them, and a few times they should have finished games with players sent off.Sevco problem is money, and as the media have asked for an explanation from Malmo manager it shows that they will never address Sevco problems.
This is Scotland, the land that time forgot.

  2. A wonderful symmetry. August 2011, Champions League Qualifying Round 3, Malmo knock Rangers out in the LAST CL game the now defunct club would ever play.

Fast forward 10 years, to August 2021, Malmo knock out the bastard child/tribute act out in their FIRST ever CL game.

Verily, the last shall be first, the first shall be last, and both shall be fucked.

  3. The view that they now have to sell players is just plain spin. No one wants them. Or seems to. Celtic got 10m for Frimpong. Look at Taverniers stats and you have to wonder why. Over the past two European ties we have seen why. Goldson is no better when people run at him as OE showed when he could be bothered running. Kent has some value as does Morelos but each is probably equivalent to 3 months deficit in running costs. Not good.

  4. What could account for the difference between the huns’ performances in Europe and domestically?

Only thing I can think of is that in Europe they are on a level playing field in terms of how they are refereed, whereas domestically………..well we all know how that goes,

The bretheren of the Lanarkshire Referees Association make sure that everything possible is done to facilitate their heroes’ progress; no sendings off for the entire league season ,with retrospective suspensions issued after the damage is done, and more penalties awarded for and fewer against than any other team in the league ( a year on year phenomenon even during Celtic’s unprecedented quadruple treble years)

Statistically the foregoing is significant and inexplicable except in terms of deliberate partial assistance from those charged with honestly and impartially refereeing matches in Scotland.

It stinks to high heaven and everyone knows it but looks the other way.

Time to step up and call out these cheats every time it happens Celtic, not least when we are clearly refereed to a different standard on a weekly basis.

Stop the corruption and Call It Out.

    • Yes, but the Lanarkshire Referees Association must have a branch in Poland because that referee was so biased. Goldson went unpunished, going over the top and scraping his studs down the lads leg and then dying on the pitch for two minutes to get him sent off. McGregor deciding to handle the ball outside his box and avoiding being sent off. All potential game changers.

  5. They are still trying to flog Kent to Leeds on his past few showings his inconsistency and lack of concentration should put most teams off.

Goldson and Kamara apparently soon out of contract and Tavernier been trying for a move for a couple of seasons.

Bad that their best player is 38 years of age. McGregor tonight looked as if he has lost his form also I can see him being their 2nd choice this season.

Freddo looks seriously unfit and we know he has been itching for a move fora couple of seasons. They will take anything for him bumped up with unreachable add-ons etc.

All we need now is big Mike to want his dough. If HMRC see him serious about getting that Lizzy will want her wedge as a priority.

As much as I wouldnt want to give them any money I think Celtic could make a player of Nathan Patterson. Great potential wastede across the city.

  6. Malmo are now my second favourite team of hunskelpers! They should change whatever nickname they have to “The Coffin Nailers” or some such!

I wonder if Park will drop the objections to the cinch deal now? His despicable klub will be desperately needing every penny it can get!

  7. 10 years ago, a defeat to Malmo was the catalyst for the DeidCo’s demise. History repeating itself? We can only hope so. Hope Dodgy Dave isn’t banking on a loan repayment any time soon. Oh wait ….

    • Morelos had an excellent first half but like the rest of his team mates disappeared in the second 45 minutes. He’s by far their only saleable asset.
The Malmo manager performed a tactical masterclass in the second half after the very soft sending off and Malmo looked a much better team with 10 on the park instead of 11.
Gerrard turned to McAllister and Beale for tactical advice after the break but pumping high balls from both wings into the box was playing right into Malmo’s defensive strengths
The financial loss may be a huge worry for the Ibrox board but if Gerrard and his charges lose the upcoming Celtic fixture then the shit will truly hit the fan.
Dave King’s £80m CL cash dream has already been halved.
This year’s SPFL title has never been more important with automatic entry to CL group stages guaranteed for next season and the £40m that goes with it.
Yes Dundee were poor at the weekend but there was a lot to like about the Celtic performance and some of the passing and movement off the ball was excellent. Kyogo could be a big star and Turnbull and Christie dominated midfield.
Not entirely convinced about the back four but hopefully that’s being worked on.
Let’s put the visitors to the sword tomorrow night and on Sunday turn over Hearts in the League Cup.
