The trouble with the Brits

Here in Ireland, it is something akin to an immutable law of our Irish universe.

The Brits are always at it.

Indeed, I have to see independently verifiable evidence that they’re acting in good faith at any time.

If that corroboration is not forthcoming, then, of course, they’re clearly at it.

When we Irish say “the Brits”, some people in Britain are genuinely confused.

They think it means them.

Well, it might do.

However,  the term is finely calibrated here, and it doesn’t, in the main, mean ordinary folk in Britain.

Firstly it means the British state and their functionaries.

Of course, it also pertains to the political and social elite.

Sadly, it can also apply to those who have been clearly left behind in life.

You will know them by their noise.

The Oval Office’s current occupant was quite clear who he meant when he used that very term to speak very movingly of his ancestor on a Coffin Ship making the journey to the United States in the 19th century.

“…they had no choice because of what the Brits had been doing…”

Exactly Mr President.

Exactly.

There is a common thread from the Bullingdon chaps to war criminals in the colonies and the Ibrox klanbase.

A belief that rules are for other, lesser types.

Indeed, those who abide by freely entered into agreements and generally exuded decent values are considered to be marks in the game of life.

This pandemic is the best of times and the worst of times.

I think of it in terms of wartime.

Covid19 is the enemy, and we will defeat the virus collectively as a global community and not as a series of warring states.

Hence, the Brits’ behaviour over the Astra Zeneca vaccine has been a prime example of them being at it again.

I’ve noticed recently that to solidify that ugly coalition of the British state, privileged elite and fascist underclass, the Brits have ordered compulsory patriotism should be run up the flagpole.

Sadly, this flag fiat will not apply to Narne Arne.

As ever, my comrade and neighbour Paul Larkin rarely misses the target.

Maith thú!

In Fair Caledonia, that flag thing will appeal to a rather unfortunate demographic.

We know them by their graffiti.

There are good folk out there opposing this fascist underclass and they’re definitely not Brits!

For the avoidance of doubt, it is a sad fact of life that in a democracy, we get the politicians we deserve.

In Fair Caledonia, the hatred regularly spewed out at Catholics of Irish heritage seems to be a low priority for Holyrood folks.

Our political elite here in Ireland can be every bit as shameful as those they unconsciously emulate on the other island.

This today.

Private school. Check.

Sense of entitlement. Check.

Rules are for others. Check.

All those centuries of colonial rule here laid down a template for cronyism, elitism, duplicity, and corruption.

Indeed, sometimes they behave no better than Brits

  1. ‘CANZUK International is delighted with the announcement and the upcoming regulations concerning freer movement for citizens. We will continue to lobby and advocate for freer movement of all citizens between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom and progress similar arrangements between the four countries.‘

  2. As a champion against racist and religious bigotry you use the term ” Brits” in a rather derogatory way. Try to practice what you preach. Ps I am Scottish and do not class myself as a ” Brit”/ English/UK.

  3. Phil, many many thanks for (at last), your definition of that highly emotive and distinctly calibrated term, ‘Brits’. Oh Jings! As I write this, the news is telling me that in Scotland there is is slight rise in the infection rate. Hmm0!!???

  4. This is a timely piece. I voted to leave the EU, not because of the EU or its people though.. The reasons were 2 fold for me.

    1) the Uk infrastructures is at breaking point, anyone who has to drive to work, go on rge train or go to a & e would know that. Worse, the more people who flooded into the UK, the more right wing the people are becoming, that won’t end well for anyone

    2) ‘the brits’ were hiding behind the EU, they were getting away with lies, corruption and deceit on a grand scale, take away tge EU and they are exposed.

Regarding 2}, i think in that respect my vote was not wasted, we can all see these evil charlatans for what they really are now. They were prepared to deny the electorate democracy, it is/was unbelievable.

Regarding 1}, ‘the brits’ have gone full on British empire crazy and I am starting to get a very very bad feeling about life in the Uk now. It seems the country with a housing crisis needs another 5 million Hong Kong residents, they’re being helped of course, nothing to do with a party being funded by shoe box housing developers you understand. The brits are happy to turn their island into an over populated slaves colony whilst trumpeting all things British.

On balance, jesus i wish we’d remained in the EU now, these tin pot land thieves are out of control

God save the queen…the racist regime.

    P. S. Sorry

    • Mr. Smith,

Scotland will need another half million immigrants if our economy is to survive the aging demographic in this country.

We need a younger work force to pay for the increasing number of public sector pensions or our economy will collapse.

This will all happen in the next few decades.

Okay, so we don’t need to be in the EU for this to happen but it would make the process a lot easier.

  5. One thing the UK got right was the vaccine

They invested £65mil in the AZ vaccine , EU never invested any.
They placed orders way before the EU and passed it as safe before EU.
The EU has been playing silly buggers with the safety of the AZ vaccine.
The EU has not sent any doses anywhere as well as the UK.
The vaccines are made by global pharma companies , some based in the EU who are simply fulfilling orders as best they can.
The only country blockading export is the US
    And now the EU.
The EU has made a complete balls up of the vaccine rollout it’s a bit rich blaming the UK.

    • If you check the facts you will find that the EU has exported 41.6 million vaccines to 33 countries (mostly to UK) as of 23rd March.
UK & US have not exported any vaccines at that date.
      Source Full Fact Check.
UK has contributed significantly to development of vaccines through research however.
Government appears to finally got something right in Covid management with vaccines but primarily thanks to:
purchasing arrangements – praise where praise due
research due to government grants to academia and vaccine producers
roll out by NHS – i.e. using established experts in public services – contrast to PPE purchases and Test & trace

However difficult to deny that after the government’s appalling management of Covid crisis (circa 150,000 dead) that government are trumpeting vaccine rollout for all it is worth and indulging in Vaccine Nationalism.

In that conversation, President Biden reminded his Brit underling that a hard border on this island was a non-starter.

      • Phil, you are not privy to all facts in any conversation, it just sticks in your throat, that the US/UK old pals act remains intact, despite your subjective context of history and heritage.

        Oh dear indeed.

        • Watch the free trade talks between the USA and the Brits.
It will be redolent of the destroyers for bases deal in September 1940.
The Brits are insignificant on the world stage and have been since Suez and now there’s a proud Irishman in the White House.
That must stick in your throat…
