Some consequential learning for the uber Brits in the Six Counties

These are interesting times in Narne Arne.

To that end, I would recommend this piece from Rory Carroll in the Guardian today.

You can read it here.

The article ends with a quote from Peter Shirlow, a director at the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Irish Studies.

“Brexit has come to dominate unionism…they didn’t understand the repercussions of being Brexiteers.”

Oh dear, how unfortunate…

There is now the real possibility that the business community in Narne Arne will see their future in the EU Single Market and not the disaggregating “mainland”.

Like all electorally successful political parties, the DUP could call on an eclectic coalition at election time.

Farming folk, the local business elite and the urban Protestant poor all voted for the party founded by the late Ian Paisley.

In 2016 Snarlene and Sammy told them to vote Leave, and they mostly did.

Although a majority of voters in the Six Counties voted to remain in the EU, the bedrock base of the DUP almost certainly comprised most of the leave voters in the northeast of this island.

Every day now, there seems to be a new element in this shitshow.

Dianne Dodds was initially reassuringly staunch on the issue.

Then, sadly, only 24 hours later, she manifested the Dunkirk Spirt.

Today the grown-ups in the EU sat down with Michael Gove.

I feel for them…

Lord Frost, The Brit’s lead negotiator in the Brexit surrender, is now at the cabinet table.

Gavin Esler nailed it with this tweet.

A century on from the Easter Rising, the Brexit vote in Narne Arne has been the most wondrous own goal for those who wish to retain the constitutional link to Westminster.

In any society or subculture, there is an eventual price to be paid for rewarding historical illiteracy.

Lest we forget…

Now, the Sevco community’s strategic thinkers think that they can reverse the Withdrawl Agreement (an international treaty lodged at the United Nations) with these.

A cynic might conclude that those “businessmen” are mainly from the independent pharmaceutical sector.

I, of course, couldn’t possibly comment.

This is redolent of  Monty Python’s “Life of Brian”, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Narne Arne.

During the Home Rule Crisis, their great grandparents were useful idiots in a power struggle in Westminster.

During the Brexit referendum, the DUP was a handle conduit for some dark money that was mainly spent in places like Sunderland.

Now they think that they can de-rail the European Union.

No doubt, these fine fellows would self-define as “Ulsturr Scots”.

Unfortunately for them, Brexit has also turbocharged a sense of otherness in Fair Caledonia.

Only coming two years after the 55/45 defeat in Indy Ref, the eruption of ethnic nationalism in Middle England has put the 1707 imperialist concord on notice.

Before that date, both countries had tried their hand at empire-building with varying degrees of success.

In the 17th century, the English came up against the well-armed Dutch in the East Indies.

Meanwhile, around the same time, the Scots were about as successful in establishing a colonial foothold in the Americas as Ally McLeod was in 1978.

The Darien misadventure bankrupted Scotland, and they decided to seek an arrangement t with John Bull.

Now, the loveless marriage that suited the empire builders in England and Scotland is now on the steps of the divorce courts.

Politically they’ve been sleeping in separate bedrooms for several elections now, and a formal parting of the ways looks highly likely.

Do they finally decide to stay together for the sake of the Welsh?

If it does happen, then Scottish independence is the end of the British state and that, in a very real sense, is the end of Britishness.

That will hit the self-styled PUL community in Narne Arne like a psychological tsunami.

It is time to revisit Carl Jung, dear reader:

“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

With a nod to Hemingway’s famous list, this author is fairly confident that his Irish children will thrive in a re-united island, and so will these trees.

Have a good one, and please stay safe.

This virus isn’t a joke.

So ignore the poorly educated purveyors of “utter stupidity”.

Keith Jackson Covid knickers in a twist

Actually, right now, the Brits could do with a few trillionaires with wealth off the radar.

  2. Scotland wasn’t bankrupted by the Darien project, many of those with influence were burned badly. Scotland, the country, had wealth. These people voted to join a union out of their own self interest.

  3. You still don’t get it. The EU is finished. Other countries are seeing how much they have lost due to being involved and are now seriously considering leaving too. Once the big bill comes in, you know the one where, other countries having to make up the money the UK used to pay in, there will be an uproar.
How much more in tax will the Irish be willing to pay to cover this?

    • On the contrary the EU have grown stronger by UK leaving, particularly in relation to there staunch support of Ireland in the difficult situation. EU member states have seen the benefits already of unity and getting rid of non team players, however great they believe they are, but not committed is always a good thing.
The UK have isolated themselves by foolish behavior of there electorate conned by racists and Tory parasites.
