The Dubai debacle

At the start of this historic season, I wrote that the only thing that could stop Celtic was Celtic.

Well, they’re certainly going all out to prove that assertion!

Someone, somewhere in the Parkhead hierarchy thought that the Dubai sojourn was a good idea.

Moreover, they did not revisit that original decision immediately after the derby defeat to Sevco on the 2nd of this month.

Even if the now self-isolating manager was jumping up and down to get this winter training camp, the CEO ultimately made the call.

Here is another statement from Celtic’s work experience PR team.

Across the city, they must be in disbelief at their good fortune.

Even Mr King has realised that if Sevco can just keep afloat, then they will undoubtedly stop the Ten.

Consequently, he recently allowed a six-month extension to give the board more time to repay his loan.

The current chaps in the Blue Room and Mr King will now have their place in the klan firmament as the men who stopped Celtic’s march to Ten In A Row.

However, the real credit must go to the folks at Parkhead who utterly blew it.

If Mr Desmond is not paying attention to this shambles today then the Parkhead club really is in serious trouble.

I have been informed that his top team recently completed the review of the senior people at Celtic.

There is a hillside of evidence to point to the inescapable conclusion that some positions are now untenable.

  1. I know this is drifting away from narrative but walker and boyd taking the moral high ground about covid spread. But can somebody tell me why they consider themselves ” essential workers” for elite sports ?
They are not coaches or players and should be in there homes.
I know they may technically be classed as journalists but that’s not my point.

  2. Meanwhile in an alternative reality Celtic’s increadibly popular CEO brings the press conference to order. He is flanked by manager Brendan Rodgers and club captain John McGinn. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I have asked you here to deliver a message from Celtic Football Club regarding our proposed Winter training camp to Dubai. The message is – we are staying home and so should you!”. A light ripple of applause runs around the room. Peter smiles, then says, ” We are fortunate individuals and we know it. We are well paid and will never feel the financial worries experienced by many families in Scotland during this terrible global pandemic. What kind of organisation would go on this trip while our supporters shiver in a Scottish lockdown? Not only are we not going but we are giving the money which would have ben spent on this trip to the needy in the East end of Glasgow, following this clubs great tradition”. Cheering breaks out among the Scottish media. Brendan turns to Peter and says “You are a PR genius mate. Can I have some more signing advice from you as you never pick a dud?”
“Anything to help” says the greatest CEO in football history ever. Later that night snow was settling on his conservatively short driveway….

  3. It certainly is a debacle Phil!

A sign of the times that almost every club has had some issue regarding COVID issues over the last 6 months or so.

I say almost, isn’t it remarkable how a club on the South Side of Glasgow have in fact had no issues?

I mean that is truly remarkable! I’m sure said club have adhered to the highest standards and operated in an open and transparent manner.

After all, why would a club not be transparent ?it’s not as if any sporting advantage would be gained …..

I wonder what would happen if a dissatisfied employee were to submit a data subject access request regarding their medical records of COVID tests and results….

Maybe one who has been away from first team action for a while….

  4. Shocking. How this jolly went ahead, is at least disrespectful to the fans. In light of this seasons performances, no carrot is appropriate-a liberal application of the stick is the correct medicine. What should have been a momentous season has turned into a debacle. I agree with most commentators, Rangers and Gerrard have been all that champions are made of.

  5. Hi Phil. Thanks for your work! First time posting on here. The change at our club must happen sooner rather than later. I see Roy Keane has recently spoken of his desire to get back into management. Surely DD must be aware of this and with Damien Duff also being available I think getting Keane is as manager with Damien Duff as his number 2 would rejuvenate the club. I know folk say Keane would be a gamble however I think he demands respect. Duff has been badly missed at Celtic also. I wish you and all regular readers on here all the best.
    God bless
    Thanks again Phil

  6. Another own goal although I’m not convinced having those thirteen first team players would have made any difference to the result tonight.

  7. Even a saboteur could not have had a better shift. Looks like we’re sleepwalking into a right ol’ pile. Don’t get Celtic here at all.

    Cheers pal.

  8. I was goin tae try and articulate my fury, disgust, blah-blah-blah, CEO gave himself £3.5M bonus last year blah-blah-blah. Instead I found myself (for the first time I assure you) staring at the ChicMe scanty clads.
So whoever puts these adverts on this site, thank you. It grounded me for a moment. That’s all.
So let’s all just get on with survival, helpin the neighbours, lookin after the bairns, keepin BBC safe and keepin sane. No-one, but no-one is worth £3.5M.

  9. Any “top team” review of the “senior people at Celtic” would have been concluded very swiftly, and with a clear recommendation produced: the CEO for the last 17 years needs replacing.

The fact that nothing tangible has resulted from a review suggests that it could have been a PR exercise, if it happened at all, and that DD has chosen to stick with the status quo – and regardless of what the supporters want.

DD maybe missed the boat to cash in his CFC stake when the money pile sat at c.£30M. It’s going to take a long, long time to get back to that position.

Based on nothing but speculation on my part: DD will still get his required return and I could see him selling his largest CFC shareholder stake to a U.S. investor for top dollar. …and then we will all be really p!ssed off… 🙁

  10. It appears that fences can’t keep everything out. Perhaps fans have been oversensitive and the real purpose of the fencing is actually to stop them being thrown out.
I wasn’t a Lawwell hater the “Club” at times has shown great signs of progression under him despite the more than obvious weaknesses that appeared to come from his decision making.
Now I Its time, I think, for new blood. Its risky also which has been the reason for my doubts about change. He’s very very well connected and there will be a scramble to appoint him, which begs the reason why get rid. But for me the circle has closed, its an old Bhoys club now.

This is what Fergus got rid of!!!!

The management are stale, unattached and feel entitled.

DON’T FALL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL was the warning on the GB banner. I’m positive PL had a few words to say about that at the bar after the game. Well enough said eh……….

Some times customers are worth listening to….. imagine that eh who knew??????

As I said I always thought the big picture was good at Celtic under PL. but the evidence is stacked against him.

Risky or not its time to take down the fences {who thought you’d ever say that at Celtic) and let the fans in (CUSTOMERS FOR PL BENEFIT)

DRUNK ON POWER PL FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL!!!!!!!

Risky or not it’s he’s got to go no question in my mind.

    GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. There’s much to agree with in this assessment. That said, a lot’s been written on this website about Stevie G’s merits as a football manager, not much of it good. I think some small acknowledgement of his success this season is merited, if not SevCo’s. For all the failings of his club, he seems like a decent enough fella (perhaps that’s why he doesn’t fit in?) and the sort I’d like to see more of in football.

  12. Karma is indeed a bitch!
This time last year we were all smiling as Sevco seemed to shoot themselves in the foot on almost a daily basis!
Today, it would seem to an onlooker that the entire Celtic executive had attended the same Dave King school
    of utter incompetence!
Even the Kellys, in their heyday, couldn’t have got it more wrong!

  13. Ridiculous decision to go to Dubai, as it was for key players to travel to meaningless Europa League ties when we were already out, as this risked further exposure to covid. Season is over, but it has been for a couple of months. Maybe, finally, some big changes will be made.

  14. The need for an OF (RIP) in Scotland has consumed people so much we have had secret agreements and rule bending all over the place with covert wee chats about entry to the EPL, I would not be surprised if they capitulated to us in 98 because we have done everything we could this year to hand them their first title. Its almost like there is, and I use this term in the lightest possible way considering the people involved, a gentleman’s agreement neither will break the record. This latest Dubai escapade is a complete and utter farce, from who agreed what, who signed what off, wee Nippy Nic with a hard on for punishing us this year while congratulating others who had a birthday party, it was always on the cards we would not come out of this rosy. Whoever at Celtic looked at this and thought going out the UK regardless of reason during this pandemic is in my mind not fit to be anywhere in a decision making role. We as fans have shelled out knowing we might not get to a game, lost out on our own holidays, even some have lost jobs and the club has been so arrogant to think this was acceptable. I am seriously at the end of my rope here with EBTs, FWAs, Res12, the MSM and heated driveways, I am genuinely considering walking away from my club and not renewing my ST and selling my shares. I am sick of the double standards in the game & the double standards in our own club and I can spend my money better in the bookies than on a game that is rigged from top to bottom with our own club not only enabling but actively participating in the sham.

  15. Celtic were never going to get Ten because of the CEO, Lawell didn’t want it as they would lose money if Celtic won it, he only answers to Dermot Desmond and the shareholders. It just shows you the disregard the board has for the ordinary fans.
