Why Sevco cannot crest it in Glasgow

Intellectual property rights can be a legal minefield.

Just remindin…

That was my first thought when I learned today of the new Sevco klub crest.

It should be clear by now that Big Mike hasn’t gone away, you know.

Therefore, is this new iteration of the Ibrox emblem part of that struggle?

Stranger things have happened at the Govan odditorium since 2012.

So, is this now part of the shitshow?

Dear reader, I cannot share with you what I do not have.

However, it is a line that I’m pursuing.

On learning of the new emblem, my thoughts were drawn back to this statement from a Stateside member of the Sevco High Command.

No matter what is printed on the jerseys, it isn’t clear who will be selling them and what the financial arrangements are.

Not so across the city.

There the commercial operation purrs like a well-oiled machine.

Last week JD Sports announced that they were Celtic’s new retail partner.

It is another impressive piece of the off-field jigsaw at Parkhead.

Football finance expert David Low, a close associate of Celtic saviour Fergus McCann, didn’t miss with this Tweet.

That new link-up and the five year deal with ADIDAS will put Celtic in another financial solar system to anyone else on Planet Fitba.

Since the time of the Bunnet, the Parkhead club has been working to develop and improve their commercial operation.

Like the new stadium itself, there was nothing short term about the vision.

This was about laying down the foundations for a sustainable future.

Moreover, it is an evidence-based narrative that will not appear in the mainstream.

At the end of the day, the numbers are what matters and not the distilled pish which is regularly regurgitated by the Stenography Corps.

Just savour this from four years ago.

Of course, they are duty-bound to feed a feelgood narrative to the Ibrox klanbase.

At the moment, there is some confusion as to who Sevco will have as a retail partner- ach mar a deirtear, is é sin scéal eile.

Whatever the arrangements are the central truth is that Celtic will have greater commercial and retail income.

As regular readers will already know I hold to the controversial view that having access to a hillside of money can amount to a sporting advantage in professional football.

Since the Gallant Profiteers formed the new klub in 2012, it is an undeniable fact that Espanyol Glasgow has been simply the second-best in Glasgow.

A new badge will not crest that hill.

As you were.

  1. Hard on the heels of finding out that Castore has a deal with Sports Direct giving Ashley exclusive rights to sell their merchandising on the high street, up pops a new club badge with two or three slight differences to the previous one of many years standing.
Just a coincidence? I think not.
I wonder how long the wait will be before another court case looms. Boy does Dave love a legal wrangle!

    • Ha! Good one.

      “Aye, Riddy” indeed! 🙂

A new crest for a new club, looking into an uncertain future.
      So, what about;

      “Any Readies?”

  2. Why no mention of 1872? ‘ Modernised for the 21st century…. in preparation for our 150th year’.
Surely you would want to shout that from the rooftops. Like almost every other club in Scotland ( indeed the world) surely the designer could have found place to put the established date?
Perhaps there is a problem with this 😉.

‘New’ crest IP was registered yesterday. This, coupled with the look, has all the signs of a job done in a very big hurry.

      • Of last season’s top 12, only Sevco, Ross County and Livingston don’t have dates on their badges.

The last two surprise me. What with them being established clubs who HAVE won a major trophy in their histories.

  3. Both of these badges are illegal, it is illegal to have a Lion emblem on your badge as that belongs to the Queen and it was outlawed in the eighties here. In Scotland and the stv.

  4. My view. Badges are too similar. Whoever has the IP on the original rights would have more than an even chance of a successful outcome legally. Perhaps there may be an agreement in place between the parties to avoid any future conflict?

  5. The DUP PR guru has it all in hand a wee statement o’clock thrown in from club 18to30 and the gullibles will be in full flow of it all .

  6. The Celtic badge had changed has it not?
Did it not used to be
The Celtic football and athletic club
    Perhaps I’m imagining that
But surely the sevco device cannot use RFC

  7. There is a big difference. The lion on the left is saying “put ’em up, put ’em up” like the cowardly Lion in the “Wizard of Oz” and the one on the right is playing an imaginary sax. Completely different, case dismissed.

  8. Just a wee thought. Would the intellectual property rights pertain to the SPECIFIC design of the badge/trademark or the CURRENT design of the badge/trademark of the club, business, ethereal entity? There IS a difference.

  9. Sorry to display my ignorance on matters Sevco/Rangers/ Hunco whatever. I don’t know which badge is the original!!!

    • Just asking if the huns new name being the rangers why does it not say that on there badge or there gates. I would have thought it should or have I got it all wrong?

      • Am I reading into this too much? But it appears to me that Castore and Sevco are potentially muddled up in a merchandising battle regarding an IP technicality. Surely this cannot be an attempted ruse.
From what I believe big Mike would have the right to sell it no matter what was on the shirt. Maybe there is a IP loophole and should this be the case Im sure Castore and Sevco will have the legal muscle to take on SD to prove it.

How I yearn for the banter years!!!!

  11. That article in today’s Deadly Rectum states that the crest has been “modernised, ready for the 21st century”. Now, it’s either 20½ years late, or there has been a great degree of preparedness for when the Neanderthals emerge from the late-17th century!

A classic case of a wee skoosh of the Mr Sheen onto a daud of faecal matter, right enough!!

  12. For me this is the proverbial chicken and egg and what came first….Because it would have to be on the new super hero, super star , Govan galactico attire, wouldn’t it? Or has this came after the alleged production of 50’000 super hero outfits? If it is the first instance then, why wait so long to tell the world, not very clever marketing… Funny thing in all of this is that no matter how much glitter they throw on this turd it won’t change on thing

  13. That badge being that tiny wee bit different practically wins the title for sevco, surely?

However, they somehow managed to leave out one word ‘The’ as in TRFC.

We can only hope big MASH has another ace up his sleeve! 🤞🏼

    Thanks Phil🍀

    • Given the legal advice, or lack of, down Ibrox way the Crest looks a certainty to be the next court case, following on the heels of the too many to count foisted on the club by Kingco.

  14. The Club badge is everything. It is the link to the origin of a club. It is the logo, the brand, the image viewed on tv. The image used before fixtures, The identity.

A new badge, however late, means it’s not the same Rangers.

Imagine the Celtic badge being changed, all hell would break loose.

I suggest copyright law will not allow the new badge as a replacement as it’s too similar to the original. They’ll have to design something more different.

So King gave Ashley back the logos?
