Austerity and opportunity

The news that Jonny Hayes and Jozo Šimunović are not being kept on by Celtic should not come as a surprise.

They both served the Parkhead cause well.

This is the new normal, and the post-Covid19 world will see tighter squads.

The richest club in Scotland are going about their business quietly and efficiently.

Several things are being fed into the decision making process.

I’m told that age, wage, and injury profile was considered when deciding to let players go.

Over the last two days, the Sevco High Command has been in conclave for several days.

At their dignified meeting yesterday, the Conveyancing Consigliere was asked a very precise question about the situation with Elite Hummel.

His Blue Room colleague wanted to know if Sevco could be placed in a situation where they would need the permission of the Danish company to wear Castore gear.

Unfortunately, the brilliant legal mind that Mr King relied upon with the Sports Direct litigation could not give a definitive answer.

It would appear that the interim chairman does not appear to have the skillset of his predecessor.

The main issue on the agenda was how they could generate funds.

At this point, I would not be surprised if their asking price for Señor Alfredo José Morelos Aviléz is heading south at a rate of knots.

Unfortunately, the impending financial carnage in the English Championship means that the prospect of a significant fee for the Colombian is increasingly unlikely.

I spoke today with an agent who operates mainly in the second tier in England.

He said to me that many clubs in that league would simply close and not re-open if there are closed-door games past Christmas.

Quite frankly, that is financial carnage.

Of course, a cash-rich club like Celtic will be on the lookout for players who would previously be out of their wage range.

  1. Had to laugh this morning Phil. I know the ads that piggyback onto your site are not under your control, well I hope not. However, what meets me this morning but an ad for My Gers, join now.

I now have to try to explain to the wife why I’m getting such ads when I don’t visit any related sites. “Really, I promise, I don’t visit rangers sites. I’ve never been on FollowFollow in my life”

Well maybe I did once but it was just for research you understand. Just to see what they were saying. It doesn’t mean I like what’s on the site. Will that wash?

  2. Agree with the political bollocks being spouted that it has no place on here simply due to the tint of whatever colour of glasses you wear. Away and blubber your pish on Facebook.

Great piece Phil btw, keep up the good work.

You’re blog has helped me become used to the feeling of incredulity. Not at your pieces but the way blinkers have become as fashionable to the MSSM et al as Aviators did to an eighties TV villain.

How they constantly allow idiots like Quark, Keevins, Boyd and a few other exes just troll out the clickbait rabid views astonishes me daily.

I come on here for balance, much needed when I’ve been isolated for the last three months.

If I want shite politics I’ll read something else, probably the digger.

P.S. sorry, the digger was a bit of a stretch but how I felt in that moment.

  3. Imagine for a moment you are in your twenties and building your Business. Life is good. One day you crash your car into an immovable object.

The Emergency Services cut you out of your vehicle, the Ambulance Service get you to hospital as quickly as possible. Your life is saved but unfortunately you have to have both legs amputated by dedicated Public Surgeons.

Ordinary people might think you would be forever grateful to the Organisations that saved your life but alas no.

As you get wealthier your need for self aggrandisement grows as quickly as your perceived wealth. You have unexplained access to limitless unsecured Banking borrowing. As your Ego grows you knowingly orchestrate Illegal schemes to mitigate your personal, employee and Corporate Taxation.

The Taxation that pays for Emergency Services Ambulances and Medical Professionals.

You know the Media in your little Country will never ever record any of this behaviour negatively and you ride off leaving a trail of 900 million Pounds Sterling in bad debt and worthless confetti shares.

I have a lot of old Rangers/new Sevco friends. I know it is anecdotal evidence but when I detail the illegal activity of David Murray, Dave King etc etc I am told to a man/woman

“We would all do it if we thought we could get away with it”

This is the “Fabric of Society” our former First Minister defended. Is it possible to ever change it?

  4. Sad to Johnny Hayes go, dozy Jozy, not so much. I always thought he believed he was a better player than he actually was. He flattered to deceive.

To my mind he was always an accident waiting to happen. AND he WAS injury prone.

Hayes was unlucky with the injury that basically cost him a season. Anyone can suffer a leg break.

But constant strains and pulled.muscles, ligaments and hamstrings imply an underlying problem.

  5. Very telling that only one club has so far made a player purchase for next season …. (Note: while the wealthiest club trim their squad) …

…. yet only one club has failed to publish interim accounts for this season.

I’m sure the media will point out this fiscal dichotomy that could only originate from one place.

  6. Have a look at Kris Boyd’s article in the sun today.
He doesn’t get past the first couple of lines without tying himself in knots.
He asserts that Rangers were sent down to the bottom division which was a slap in the face to the biggest club in Scotland.
Sent down Kris, sent down indeed and it’s been a long, long time since the Rangers were the biggest club in the country.
Isn’t it amazing that the man responsible for the collapse of Rangers hardly gets a bad word said against him.
When HBOS offered Murray a chance to buy back part of Murray International Metals, his original lovechild, he dropped Rangers in a second and handed the keys of the castle to Craig Whyte whose history he was made well aware of before pocketing the pound coin.
. It’s almost as if the Scottish media has taken a collective vow of silence as to Murray’s starring part in Rangers downfall.
The patsy was put in place and the fans and the media trained their collective guns on Whyte.
Rangers EBT issue was the principle reason for their collapse. Hee haw to do with Whyte, all to do with Murray who himself was the biggest beneficiary of the scheme.
Yet all these years on and Murray has escaped the wrath of the Scottish media for reasons known only to themselves.

  7. Celtic FC site has 36 First Team and 27 Reserve squads listed. First Team had loan players Forster, Bauer, Arzani and Elynoussi and they have released Hayes, Simunovic and Callum Miller. This leaves us with 60 players plus the Development Players.

We have Karamoto Dembele, Okoflex, O’Connor, Afolabi, Welsh, Robertson all listed as Reserve Players. We need space for them in the 1st Team squad.

Gordon needs to go to allow a young Keeper if we are signing Forster

Its Harsh but too many players can create a bad atmosphere on the way to 10

Would have preferred him to stay on another season for 10IAR.

A good squad player, and a very decent, “impact sub”.

He couldn’t have been paid anything near the top wage level either.

Hope he gets what he’s looking for in his next move.

At the very least comments that have some kind of relevance. The constant throwing in of political opinions which rarely have any bearing on Phil’s piece, or comments on completely unrelated matters, by usually the same people, are detracting from the pleasure of visiting the site I’ve thoroughly enjoyed for many years now.

All sevco see’s is some form of conspiracy.

Phil, you must have some insight to sevco’s interim accounts that were presented the SFA for UEFA licencing?

    • Sorry but don’t see 9 in a row or 10 in a row as any great footballing achievement. Celtic have finances way above any other team in the league, and my granny could manage 10 in a row with these resources. Winning any figure in a row in most other league WOULD be a big thing, but not in the diddy leagues that are Scottish football. Likewise when a Celtic manager gets manager of the month /year, a manager who win things with far less resources are where these accolades should fall.

  13. Charles K I don’t know how you formed your opinions on the events leading up to the tragic death of George Floyd. There was no gathering of African Americans, threatening or otherwise. The suggestion that there were only two cops is totally wrong. There were at least SIX police in attendance of whom three were kneeling on George Floyd. The video taken by the bystander was taken from the sidewalk at an angle which only showed the cop on his neck. The cop who committed the murder was actually the last to appear on the scene. What’s important is the number of people, of mixed ethnicity, who recognised Floyd’s distress and pleaded with the police to let him up. If you doubt the veracity of this account watch this report from a news outlet.

The clubs doubt an August 1st season start can be achieved.

Why didn’t these clubs rage against SEVCO and their diddy dossier demanding last season could be played in June or July? The Sevco position was utterly impossible.

Not to worry though, Anne Budge has a group of philanthropists to cover £35k machines for everyone. Peanuts!

In fact, how can SPFL Premiership clubs not afford £35k? It’s just ridiculous. If things are that bad they should just fold right now. Ffs £35k, moaning c****.

New The Rangers (SEVCO) were banned from Europe for three years as a brand new club. They had no accounts and the disgraceful legacy of the old club persisted.

Celtic are arguably the best run club in all of the UK. Their accounts and FFP history is exemplary. Platinum.

Better than all EPL Clubs. All of whom carry debt.

For those who may or may not be interested I am old enough to have seen The Lions in the flesh…to see Jinky tormenting on the right wing..my Dad took me to the biggest game of all time in this Country when we beat Leeds at Hampden. I was 11 years old standing on a crush barrier High up in the East Terracing when Billy Bremner scored the goal of his life.

Much much later I was at Ibrox when we went as Champions and we won 3-0. Henrik scored his 50th goal of the season right in front of me and came up to us making his famous 5 Zero sign with his fingers. What a day.

I haven’t been to ANY Celtic new Rangers game since they died. My family ask me why?

I honestly do like tribute acts. I’ve seen Abbamania. They look a bit like ABBA, They dress a bit like ABBA, they sound a bit like ABBA but at the end of the day everyone knows they are not the real ABBA.

  18. Celtic Statement quotes Peter Lawwell “Our supporters are everything to us”

This is the same individual who never challenged the legitimacy of any honours won by old Rangers when the illegal payments of De Boer and Tore Andre Flo were confirmed. When this illegal payment scheme was in force it wasn’t on his watch, but may I remind you, this was at the start of the Larsson years at Celtic.

Fast forward a decade and old Rangers have been found out big time (finally) and their “payable” minimum Wee Tax liability established. The SFA ignores this and provides old Rangers with a License required to play in European Competition thus depriving Celtic and other Scottish Clubs their rightful place in the upcoming season’s UEFA Competitions.

The Celtic Board and Peter Lawwell want this fact buried. Peter Lawwell wants the fans who are everything to Celtic to forgive and forget.

    I cannot

    • Speaking as a Celtic season ticket holder for over 30 years, and who, like you, was privileged enough to see the lions strut their stuff first hand, I find this anti Lawwell stuff bemusing. And, btw , this isn’t directed solely at you, there are many with your view, possibly Phil included.

At a time when we are enjoying our most successful time in history, bested only by the Lions, the anti board, anti Lawwell sentiments by some is something I think we’ll try to explain to youngsters in 20 years time, without really managing it. (A bit like explaining why Fergus got booed onto the park to unfurl the league flag).

Lawwell has made mistakes, is not perfect, but no one can surely argue he has been a massive asset to Celtic and has us in a position where we can dominate Sevco for years to come.

Do some Celtic supporters really want Lawwell removed, other board members removed during this time, and are they quite prepared to boycott games, refuse to buy season tickets or merchandise, as I have read on other sites, until action is taken? In short, are they really willing to cause damage to Celtic. And all because Rangers cheated and died!

The question these supporters should be asking themselves is Do I hate Rangers more than I love Celtic.

Already they are digging into this for Hagi, Close Bros and deferred salaries over the next few months.
The great unknown is the Sports Direct bill which has been pushed down the road with courts at a standstill.
No doubt when the legal stuff is sorted out Ashley will be trying to claim his share of the ST cash.
Given whats happened so far have Rangers finally for sure rid themselves of Sports Direct?
What about Elite and Hummel, are they happy with where they are at the moment?
How must they feel as Castore appears from nowhere to pick up the merchandising deal and the squillions that come with it?
With the last legal professional no longer in situ is King dealing the cards from South Africa?
We know he has a love affair with the law and will spend whatever it takes to claim a victory, or just claim one. What happened to that wine cellar Dave?
Gerrard will get a job somewhere in England for sure because of his player achievements.
However in Scotland he will be remembered as the Rangers manager when Celtic romped to 10 IAR, by which time he will have had enough and go back to wearing his replica Celtic Seville strip!

  20. Regarding the USA. I was appalled at the scenes of the Officer pining the arrested guy down and saddened by his death. Completely avoidable.

It raises a great many questions. We do not know all the circumstances.

I know Black officers arrest white guys that same way.

I know Black officers arrest black guys that same way.

They are trained to do so.

There was footage of Miami Dade officers ejecting mostly black guys from Miami Beach at the start of the lockdown. People were saying it was racist until it was pointed out that four of the dozen Impeccably dressed officers were black officers.

What risks are there to USA police officers (black and white) from black communities? What’s the stats? Is it mostly black guys shooting them? What Unacceptable circumstances are officers operating in? They don’t get up for work in the morning saying I’m going to go out and kill a black guy today.

I would like to see former Presidents Obama and Clinton go on tv together to calm the USA.

I would like Congress to announce a national enquiry headed by both these guys.

Further evidence, from a professionally trained eye:

There are only two police officers.

One of them, a smaller physical guy (Skinny arms) compared to the black man being arrested is having to restrain him on his own.

His partner is having to face and control an enlarging group of agitated black people.

Without the group of black people, the second police officer would have physically assisted his partner to arrest the big criminal and put him in the car.

As it was, the second police officer dare not turn his back on a black crowd or officers are both possibly dead.

They were now awaiting several minutes for back up to arrive.

This is not racism. There is zero evidence of racism.

I am convinced the presence of a black crowd effected decision making and contributed to the death.

As an aside, if George had not committed a felony, this would not have happened. He broke the law. Does he have a criminal record?

There were 3 police officers shoulder to shoulder on top of floyd, not just one.
The bystanders, who weren’t only black, were getting ‘agitated‘ because they were witnessing another white cop kill another black man.
Whether the guy broke the law or not, murdering people is not in a policeman’s job description. Racially motivated or not, a policeman knelt on a restrained man’s neck until he was dead.
As an aside, even criminals have rights and Officer Chauvin will soon have his own criminal record.

      • It is probably true about the democrats. Just like it was probably a Trump supporter who drove up to a crowd of protesters and opened fire.

To further tarnish the dialogue with shite suggesting there would be less fisss if it was a white person at the very best is unrepentant white privilege, and at worst is white suprematist bullshit. Either way it’s overt racism.

        That didn’t kill him.

Lying him face down cuffed behind his back makes it difficult for lungs to expand (back rises), especially for big heavy blokes. Pressure on his back stops the lungs expanding.

She’s clearly on an agenda to criticise the SPFL.

    Some questions:

    1. Who are these philanthropists? What is the source of their wealth?

    2. Is the money clean and certified by solicitors?

    3. Why don’t they deal with the SPFL themselves directly if they are concerned for Scottish football?

    4. Are these the mysterious people who donate anonymously to Hearts FC?

    5. Do these people have contracts and receive payments from the Scottish Govt? Is it ultimately taxpayers money looking back?

    6. Why don’t these philanthropists just issue bank drafts to the bottom 30 clubs in Scottish football? They will know their cash goes directly to each club.

    7. What’s all the Anne Budge rush and criticism about? We have been in lockdown ten weeks, now this, I’m sure it can take a few days for clubs to respond via the spfl.

If brains were dynamite you wouldn’t have enough to blow your friggin nose.

  24. Just a thought… now that england is slowly easing out of lockdown, how soon will the courts system be up and running apropos litigation cases? I think that is something that, if it hasn’t already done so, will focus the attention of the I’mBroke boardroom.

  25. Given that carnage and the fact that UEFA is somewhat distracted you do have to wonder how an application to join the championship in 2021-22 would be received. Compete for the 10 and then leave. Celtic would be a huge draw for the new Championship, and great for TV revenue and other forms of sponsorship which certainly cover the lost European revenue. It could be now or never.

    • Agreed. CFC should join the English Championship in 2021-22.

I’m sure Charger would disagree as it strengthens the Union. SNP would go doo lally. Scotland’s greatest football team goes to England.

      • You imagine Scotland is going to vote to be governed by Johnson and his ilk because Celtic were playing in England? Do we then take a temporary sojourn in the EU while we’re still playing in Europe? Your analysis shows all the depth of a dried out rock pool.

There was a guy who used to post on this site up until a few months ago when he suddenly disappeared. I’m seriously wondering if it’s you under another identity. He spouted exactly the same semi-literate, half baked, brain dead pish you come out with.

Your ability to tell others what THEY are thinking is truly phenomenal. You really should put your psychic powers to some greater use.

      • I’ve wanted Celtic in England for decades as anyone who knows me will testify. Celtic are a club with its roots in Scotland, and grown from an Irish seed. Celtic will BE Celtic whatever league they play in.

NEVER presume to tell me or others what I’m thinking you arrogant, ignorant arsehole.

      • There is no chance that Celtic or Rangers would be welcomed in England. The vast majority of clubs would oppose it. Same goes for chief constables. The EFA and SFA don’t want it as the only way FIFA and UEFA would accept is a single British FA and team.

        • Celtic might be, but the GB WOULD be a major drawback. Sevco would have no chance. Memories of Manchester 2008 are too fresh.

Scottish TV money is based on 4 games against sevco every season. Would that be worth more to the TV companies than two games each against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester Utd, Manchester City, Spurs, Chelsea or Everton? I think not.

I want Celtic playing in the EPL for two reasons.

          1. Scotland is stiffling us professionally and financially. We are a great white shark in a fish bowl. We are like a Ryder Cup golfer who has been banished forever to the Tartan Tour.

We already have the stadium, training facilities, local and international fan bases. In one of Europe’s major leagues we would have the TV pulling power to match anyone. Right now we can’t attract and can’t afford the best players around. In the EPL, with all the cash that would generate, and with the brand of football we play, top players would want to come to us.

          2. Eventually, sooner or later, a European Super League WILL happen. With or without the approval of UEFA. TV money will dictate it. If we are playing in, and have consolidated our position, in one of the top leagues in Europe, we have a realistic chance of being in it. Playing in Scotland we have no chance.

          • Agree with a lot of what you say, other than the final part; I would argue that Celtic, with their fan base, facilities and world wide reputation would be a draw for top European teams

      • No matter how much I wish you lot would f%^$ off to England , do you honestly believe the lower league clubs would allow you to walk into the Championship, thus taking a space, one of the lower league clubs could win by promotion?
IF and it will never happen, Celtic did go south then they would have to start at the very bottom. Just as Sevco should have done, but got squeezed in before clubs with proper accounts. Only in Scotland could a club enter a league system higher than the lowest club waiting promotion.

        • As you rather trenchantly imply, I don’t think Celtic’s target should be English football. We are however in a changing world. This will affect every aspect of life including football. Some clubs are about to disappear, and not just in Scotland either. What I can see developing, however, is some sort of Pan European arrangement, assuming of course the Little Britain mob responsible for Brexit don’t manage to scupper it.; funny foreigners and all that. A club with Celtic’s traditions, fan base and facilities would be welcomed with open arms. And pockets.
