Of course, Alfredo Morelos would not be the first foreign player in Planet Fitba to have been…ahem…misquoted.

My understanding is that the translation of the interview was provided to the broadcaster by the striker’s agent.
I find it rather surprising that Sky did not corroborate the agent’s version.
Today legal reporter James Doleman put this out on Twitter.

My Spanish is far from fluent, but I struggled to hear the word “racismo” or the term “abuso racista” in his interview.
However, the interview certainly got a lot of unquestioning traction in the media.

Dear reader, it is almost as if Sevco hired a PR rookie who thinks that he is the smartest hombre in the habitación.
Casi…
Addendum
It would appear that Celtic FC also has concerns about the Morelos interview.
Here is their statement.
Developing story…

Ahem!

Hi Phil. Why is there no statement from the SFA? Why is any club, allowed to make inflammatory statements such as RIFC did after the game on the 29th Dec? Surely any club issuing such a statement is bringing the game into disrepute. Surely Alfredo Morelos, his agent, SKY TV must shoulder responsibility and could Alfredo Morelos be charged with bringing the game into disrepute? Michael Stewart challenging James Traynor is refreshing but the CFC board must protect their supporters and clubs great reputation.
Looking into cancelling my BBC licence due to MacIntyre’s apology to Traynor, however, I found this from their official website.
The law says you need to be covered by a TV Licence to:
watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any channel
watch or stream programmes live on an online TV service (such as ITV Hub, All 4, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Now TV, Sky Go, etc.)
download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer.
This applies to any device you use, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.
Short and curlies,anyone?
As the law stands they have no right to enter your property. So you will get plenty of threatening letters through from them, but there’s isn’t much they can do unless you allow them to enter your home.
I always understood they had the power if it was involving tax.
That’s not right mate. They’ve clearly made a mistake on the website. Licensable activity – under the Communications Act 2003 and Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004 (as amended) licensable activity broadly means using or installing any device to:
a) watch or record any television programme service;
b) watch or record any television programme at the same time (or virtually at the same time) as it is being shown on any television programme service; or
c) (as of 1st September 2016) watch or download any BBC programme on demand on BBC iPlayer, even if it is accessed through another provider, such as Sky, Virgin Media, Freeview or BT.
Licensable activity does not include:
a) watching programmes by means of pre-recorded media such as DVD and Blu- ray;
b) downloading or watching S4C TV on demand on BBC iPlayer or listening to radio programmes on BBC iPlayer.
c) downloading or watching on demand programmes from other providers, such as:
ITV Hub, All 4 or Demand 5
BT Vision, Virgin Media or Sky Go
Netflix or Now TV
And by definition Amazon prime is on demand.
Sorry if I’ve posted this previously but as you can see here from the actual policy you DONT need a license to watch Amazon etc. oth residential accommodation and non-residential arrangements.

It’s just another example of the beeb NOT living up to their own mission statement.
And that is/was enough for me to stop paying,it is more than enough for you too.
Cancel then you get a letter stating that you have stopped using their services for the above reason and now do not want to pay for a LIESence.
They’ll then send you a letter of exemption for two years, stick that on the inside of your front to show them,IF they turn up.There’s millions doing that hence the debating about decriminalisation @Westminster.My bet is they do NOT show,I’ve not had them visit in 3.5 yrs!
G’luck🍀
If you try to watch this video this morning, you will see a message saying “SAS ERROR”…
Now we know who done the translation – it’s been narrowed down to 3 people. It was either ANDY MCNAB, OLLIE OLLERTON, or ANT MIDDLETON that provided the subtitles. Maybe all three of them done it as a collective? 😆
This Morelos interview could have legs… like the never-ending, ‘Hitler in the Bunker’ video meme!
And rather than an unbelievably skinny, brakes tampering nutjob chasing Morelos out of Scottish football,
it would appear that a not skinny, PR incompetent nutjob is doing his best to inadvertently humiliate his client’s star player on national TV.
Who would blame Morelos for demanding an escape from Ibrox now…? 🙂
https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/new-twist-rangers-striker-alfredo-21430907
SKY are denying it was their translation.
Begs the question why wasn’t it their translation? Why didn’t a second independent translator confirm the translation, and surely Sky has written Management procedures regarding foreign language interviews and translations?
Why have all Editorial protections failed here? Was it by accident or were they deliberately circumvented by an employee on an anti Celtic agenda?
Because untrue anti Celtic racist accusations were deliberately broadcast. How can that possibly be accidental?
Spanish and Latin American players in England listened to the words and read the text in disbelief.
2 words…
Points deduction.
That new club needs put in its place
What an embarrassment to Scottish football and to Scotland
Sly sports have form for Celtic bashing, although, from what I’ve read it seems the wrongly translated subtitles were down to his agent.(tbc)But,I’d wager that jabba also cast a blue biased eye over it BEFORE it was screened by sly sports. It IS his job after all.
Like the racism allegations from the 29th Dec. the damage has been inflicted….I wonder if we will ever get a retraction, from anyone/everyone involved.I think we all know the answer to that one.
This type of slur sticks and stinks,if there is any apology, which I think unlikely,it will NOT be seen by the same number of viewers that witnessed this fabricated BS.It is happening far too often and must be stopped, they are printing and screening LIES about Our club and the Club have made a statement calling it out.
Two sets of complete lies all served up by compliant press pack and now a major sports provider.
If this was BT that’d done this,I’d have cancelled with them already.
Thanks Phil🇮🇪
I tell you what’s lost..the whole industry that is known as Sesame Street. Full of muppets and puppets with Mr Traynor with his hand up all there ars#* calling all the shots and he is being allowed to do so. He needs knocked doon.
Could you actually knock him down? He looks like one of those dolls you used to get that bounced straight back up. Something to do with a low center of gravity. In his case probably an arse the size of China!!!
The clear issue on this is who is responsible for the translation – Morelos love him or hate him has no blame here…
1. Was it Rangers/Rangers translator/Traynor spin who provided the translation – sacking offence
2. Was it Sky producer/editor – sacking offence
Morelos to sue either for….. something!!
Lots of weeping and nashing of teeth from the blue side over the last few days as the racist abuse pish alledgedly aimed at Alfredo is being pushed by an accomodating media and now Sky.
Whoever is responsible at Sky Sports for the deliberate mistranslation of what the Colombian man child said should be sacked on the spot.
Celtic should insist that to be the case and also get a grovelling apology from Sky on behalf of Celtic fans falsely accused of racially abusing Morelos.
Embarrassing, makes you wonder what pish they will come up with next. Sevconia are raging right now, imagine the outcry if they Hibs it tomorrow night and we go 10 clear, wonder what squirrel they will pull out the hat then?
Just win the League for the 9th time, and then the Scottish Cup; that is the only statement that is required Celtic!
Absolutely. Hit them where it hurts.
yup.Continue to win and the whine from Ibrox will exceed the level of beel its already at.Tough.As an old Tim I knew used to say “Hey,I’m not biased.Fuck them.”
Aye. I’ve said it before. Let’s just do our talking on the park. As we did tonight.
If anyone launches the talked about £30m bid for big Eddie, hunt them tae fuck. The £20m we got for Dembele would not buy big Eddie’s left ball!!
So we are told Morelos made an allegation of racism five weeks ago. The police investigated, it remains unproven and unsubstantiated.
It now appears from this SKY interview that NO allegation of racism is made by the player at all during the interview regarding the Celtic game.
Could it be the whole entire thing including the original accusation is erroneous and a translation problem??
Funny Jackie, circuitous I love. Brighton
Morelos stated in Spanish in the SKY interview regarding the end of the game “I said nothing of racist”. The man is saying he didn’t complain of racism.
I’m glad that the Club has OFFICIALLY responded to this pathetic piece of rubbish.
And I also hope Jim White is culpable somewhere along the line…and gets his haw maws booted…right oot the door.
Go for it Celtic…in a BIG way.
And let’s hope as Phil says…It’s a developing story.
Oh and much kudos to MS…well handled Michael.
Laugh….. FFS I nearly bought a round
Steady!!!
I speak fluid Glaswegian and all I head was, pure pish
Just let the hunplosion continue , they’re desperate now , it’s all falling down round about them , Jabba trying to deflect from the bigger picture , don’t be surprised if slippy G does walking away a lot sooner than we think, he’s been found out big time , and it’s damage limitation if he ever wants to manage his beloved Liverpool
It is interesting that the DR headline on the skysports/Morelos embellished translation story describes it as “misquoted”, and yet their own “Morelos car tampering” piece against Michael Stewart’s broadly accurate piece with the exemption of adding “brakes” to it, is describes as a “slur” (presumably against the esteemed news organ that is the DR). To paraphrase, I believe they call this hypocritical cant’
Celtic said “we owe it to our supporters”??? Just like resolution 12 ?
From my position, in an honest world, The Rangers PR well paid professional has failed miserably. It is his job to ensure nothing is lost in translation. It is his job to ensure The Rangers’ players are quoted and subtitled 100% correctly.
Wrong subtitles is a damning accusation of incompetence to be levelled at The Rangers PR.
However, we all know the honest truth of it. There was no error. The truth is 100 times worse.
What is The Rangers supporter Jim White’s capacity at Sky Sports these days? Is he a retained consultant or staff employee?
Good statement… now let’s see what Sky have to say about their shoddy “translation.”
Heads need to roll at Sky.
Why the hell are Celtic not opening their mouths? Also a few “journalists”, need a lifetime ban from Celtic Park/Lennoxtown.
they have done.
Can someone translate what was actually said by Morelos ?
Joe , The Record have translated it.
What if you refuse to buy, read or click on their website like all right minded Celtic fans do/should?
This is what you’re looking for…..Question 7 has the fake ‘racist’ allegation –
Alfredo Morelos’ Sky Sports interview – What was quoted and what he actually said
1. The young boy who kicked a ball about in the streets of Cerete, what was that boy like?
Sky’s translation: “I started playing at five-years-old. My father took me to pitches in my home town.
“It started a process of almost 10 years. A time of formation that was important for my career.”
Morelos actually said: “It was very nice. I started my career at the age of 5.
“My father took me on the road of football. It was a beautiful thing. It was a big process.
“I started playing football for a club called Los Fumigadores de Cereté”
2. Tell me about Cerete, could it be a dangerous place at times?
Sky’s translation: “Cerete is a poor town. There’s little infrastructure or opportunities. Most people are working just to afford food, just to afford the basics.
“There was no electricity in my home. No air conditioning in a place that averages 40 degrees.
“Some people chose a different route where there was faster and easier money.”
Morelos actually said: “Yes, of course. Cereté Is a humble town. There is a lot of poverty.
“A lot of people don’t have the means to eat and to give their kids an education. The truth is there a lot of poverty.
“But I think there a lot of positive things about Cerete.”
3. People in Britain know about your disciplinary record but what was it like in Finland?
Sky’s translation: “In Finland I never had any disciplinary problems, neither there nor in Colombia.
“Now that I have these problems I realise I have to keep working to find a way to solve them.”
Morelos actually said: “In Finland I didn’t have any problems with cards, neither did I in Colombia. I don’t know. There are a lot of reasons.”
4. What went wrong here?
Sky’s translation: “I am a very physical player. That’s been a benefit to me over my career.
“I can withstand rough hits and hard tackles. I never fear any opponents.”
Morelos actually said: “Since I arrived at Rangers, you can feel football.
“You can feel the attention every time you go out on the pitch. I can sense people feeling football.”
5. Is that the boy from Cerete? If you hit me, I’m going to hit you back?
Sky’s translation: “I never shied away from any fights since I was a kid. But off the pitch it’s very different. On the pitch I try to show my passion.
“To make the defenders feel my presence to fight for the crowd.”
Morelos actually said: “I used to buy (provoke) the fights when I was a kid in the school and in the streets.
“I am not scared of anybody. I am a person with a lot of character and more in my job. The football here is very physical.”
6. Do you have any concern that your discipline problems would stop a move in the future?
Sky’s translation: “Yes I can see how it could affect a potential move but I also know that scoring goals can always open more doors.”
Morelos actually said: “Maybe, it could happen.”
7. A lot has been made of the two gestures, one against Motherwell and then in the game against Celtic. Can you explain why those were made?
Sky’s translation: “First, I’ll talk about the match against Motherwell. We were winning a very important match.
“I scored a very important goal and I celebrated. I didn’t mean to offend anyone.
“If you look back I have done this celebration at home matches and away matches.
“In the match against Celtic we were winning in added time. I fell down. Whether that is simulation or not, that’s up to the referee.
“Afterwards it was very frustrating to hear the crowd screaming at me. They were saying offensive and racist words.
“I wasn’t trying to instigate or incite anything.
“I just wanted them to stop, it was sort of a symbol saying: ‘Come on guys, the game is over! This doesn’t need to continue!
“‘I understand that you criticise me but now it’s over!’”
Morelos actually said: “First I want to speak about what happened against Motherwell.
“We were winning an important game away from home and I scored a goal. I celebrate as I always do in Ibrox with my people, with the Rangers fans.
“I didn’t mean any offence with the gesture. I always celebrate the goals like this and as I am telling you now I didn’t want to offend anybody.
“About the game against Celtic, we were winning 2- 1. I don’t know if I fell over. I didn’t try to win a penalty.
“But the referee took the decision to send me off. It was okay for me. It was his decision.
“But the gesture I did at the end of the game didn’t have any racist meaning.”
8. How often do you experience racist abuse from the crowd?
Sky’s translation: “Yes I’ve felt racism on and off the pitch. It’s very sad. But it’s not something that affects me much.
“I just try to focus on my job which is scoring goals and winning matches. Sometimes it’s frustrating when a crowd is throwing coins at me or throwing drinks at me.
“Obviously saying racist things or making chants about my mother. That’s obviously very offensive.
“Those things affect my family and are frustrating. But I am a strong person.”
Morelos actually said: “Yes, Yes. I feel there have been a lot of racist gestures towards me.
“Even in Aberdeen where people messed about with my mother and messed about with me.
“People have thrown coins and everything towards me sometimes when I scored goals and celebrated when we played away from home.
“I am the type of person who is up for it and I don’t waste any time paying attention to this because this is my work and it is my passion to score goals.
“And I know that opposition fans don’t like this.”
9. Are you ever worried about your safety?
Sky’s translation: “I’ve generally felt safe. I’m generally unfazed and it’s more about my family and them feeling nervous about the situation.”
Morelos actually said: “I don’t know what they want to do and what they are trying to do.
“If I never realised that a person was underneath my car, I don’t want to think about what could have happened.
“In this kind of situation, you are thinking what is going on? This leaves you worried.
“Thank god I managed to see the person and thank god they are investigating things.”
10. It won’t drive you out, Alfredo?
Sky’s translation: “No.
“My goal is to stay focused on my game, to help Rangers stay focused on winning the title and trophies, and if I do that I think everything with my family will be calm.”
Morelos actually said: “I have to be very careful now with everything.
“As I told you, this is a little worrying. I cannot lose my focus of what I have to do, which is playing for Rangers.”
11. How inspirational is Steven Gerrard to you?
Sky’s translation: “Yes it’s very motivating to be playing for a legend like Gerrard. My team-mates and this coaching staff feel like a second family.
“Now it’s all about making sure we do the right things on the pitch.”
Morelos actually said: “It is motivating to be in the hands of a football legend. This is beautiful for me.
“Sharing everyday with him, he is like my second family. My team-mates and the coach, all the trainers are my second family for me.
“I am living half of the day with all of them.”
It has now been announced that the interview was “mistranslated”. I’m fairly certain that imperfectly translated would be a more fitting description of the events.
I can speak a little Spanish and I heard the word “squirrel” mentioned a few times.
