Eight blinking passengers and a heated driveway

On the 29th December 2018, a Ryan Jack deflected shot had given the basket of assets victory over an uncharacteristically flat Celtic side.

The Ibrox klanbase KNEW that they had won the league that day and celebrated accordingly.

The Sevco High Command picked up the vibe from the supporters and were convinced that two quality signings would get them over the line.

Davis and Defoe were brought in on unsustainable wages.

Of course, Sevco ended season 2018-2019 with zero trophies.

Twelve months later it was Parkhead that was to host the same league fixture.

Once more, Sevco prevailed by a single goal margin.

Cue the same embarrassingly mental celebrations.

Yesterday it was time for reality to bite.

Apparently, there is such a thing as an “emergency podcast”.

I found it pleasing Hearts equalizing goal was scored by a chap who very publicly left Sevco in 2012.

Mr Gerrard looked visibly crushed in the post-match presser.

He certainly didn’t hold back in his criticism of his players.

“Eight passengers”?

Ouch!

Throwing your players under the bus is rarely a sign of a manager who in full command of the situation.

Sometimes it works and there is an angry reaction from the dressing room.

Time will tell.

A  source who was in the press room at Tynecastle yesterday told me that there were gasps from the assembled hacks as Gerrard ripped into his players.

That is either a high-risk strategy from the Liverpool icon or a sign of a guy buckling under pressure.

After his rant about Leigh Griffiths at Rugby Park I did suggest a period of quiet reflection for Mr Boyd.

It would appear that he has taken this friendly advice on broad.

The reaction of The People in message board land was typically Pavlovian, i.e. spend more money and bring in better players.

This is the last week of the transfer window and so far, Operation Sell Alfredo has been a total failure.

There hasn’t been a single firm offer for Morelos at this stage of the window.

In fairness, the Stenography Corps has given it their obedient all to come up with all manner of fictional interest in the player.

The Barcelona story was my particular favourite.

Moreover, the likely Morelos transfer fee that has been discussed in the Blue Room by the Convict Chairman has little connection to market reality.

Mr Gerrard will be happy that he is not about to lose his main goal threat.

However, the chaps staring at the invoices at Ibrox know that money must come in from somewhere and fast.

The league never lies and, at the moment, it is advantage Celtic, but only just.

Only the hubris of their untitled director of football is preventing the richest club in Scotland from seriously strengthening.

  1. Not seen or heard much of the sevco CONMAN chairman lately . Anyone would think he is keeping a low profile or maybe he has moved on from sevco out the back door without us knowing.

  2. DEFUNCT at 38 years of age has replaced Miller another 38 year old the only difference is DEFUNCT is a good £30 grand + more in wages a week . That looks like a good bit of business on DEFUNCT part but another disaster for the sevco club ,board and their fans . KERCHING .

My Celtic full time Celtic supporting days started when we won the 1965 SCF and ended with the removal of Jock Stein (without whom Celtic would not exist in its present form) in 1978 after the Board had sold our best players(e.g Dalgleish,Hay and Macari ) without any replacements. Celtic won 9IAR then despite Rangers buying star player after star player, SFA prejudice and countless poor referee decisions(R H Davidson’s performance in the 1970 SCF still haunts me to this day).

Should,Celtic win the SPL this year it will be possibly be the greatest success of our history as the SPL fixture list (by accident or design) could prevent 9IAR. Before the split(after 33 games) Celtic have 7 away games to play,5 of these against the current and likelyTop 6 and 4 home games.Rangers,on the other hand have 8 games at home and 4 away, none of which is against any of the Top 6! A 5pt lead may not be enough unless Celtic win at Ibrox.

When the split occurs Celtic should have 5 home games and Rangers should have 5 away games against the Top 6.The SPL will not,of course. allow this and, at the split, I’m sure the SPL will want to ensure a 19/19 split for both clubs. This will mean the SPL will change 2 of Rangers final 5 away games against Celtic,Motherwell,Aberdeen,Livinston and Hibernian to Ibrox meaning,of course, Rangers will have played these 2 teams 3 times at home this season. Celtic will,on the other hand. will have to play 2 of these teams away for a third time. There is no guarantee a 3rd visit to Ibrox will be avoided!!

Of most significance, however, is that, thanks to the SPL fixture compiler, to the end of the season Rangers will play 10 games at home( where they have only lost to Celtic) and 7 away games with only their last 2 against Top 6 opposition! In comparison Celtic have 7 games at home and 9 away,7 of which will be against Top 6 opposition.

With Morelos staying, and despite the Hearts reverse surely Rangers are in a good position taking into account their favourable
fixture list.I know the split fixtures have caused problems in the recent past but these were unimportant as Celtic usually had a clear lead before the split. If the teams are close then this years split will be,at the very least, controversial.

Hope I’m wrong but signing 2 unknown players from 2 teams I’ve never heard of is a typical response from a Celtic Board to poor recent performances and the distinct possibility of not achieving 9IAR.

    • This is a point I’ve been making for months. After the split both teams have three home games and two away games to play. As the top six stands just now, and personally I don’t think it will change, Celtic will have played every team other than Sevco away twice. Meaning that our two away games are going to be our THIRD game away against those teams.

Sevco are in the exact opposite situation. ALL THREE of their home games will be against teams they have already played TWICE at home.

      This is grossly unfair.

  4. Lol wee Coco at ibrox noise blowing a fuse tonight because of a number of players out injured and some dross being kicked out the door but no players coming in . He wants to know why there is no signings the fact is Coco your team has no CASH . Now don’t be surprised if wee Coco starts shouting for statements from club18to30 opps sorry club 1872 . Ah it’s good to know the circus has not left town . Any points dropped from sevco against Ross County and Slippy G will be getting his P45 by the end if the week . I suppose they could always do a swap deal M&M for Salah and DEFUNCT for Aguero.

  5. Mr.Lawwell will be so grateful to the Hertz for their beating of Sevco.
Not, I hasten to add, just because of the result…but because it deflected away from the potential bombshell regarding Res. 12.
If what I’m reading is correct, regarding the e-mail being circulated on the 5WA, and Mr.Lawwell’s statement at the AGM, then the excrement could be about to hit the fan.
You’ll notice I’m hedging my bets about the accuracy of the e-mail…as a certain Barcabhoy is calling it fake news.
It will be interesting to see what Auldheid has to say about that.
If I had to bet on the outcome…then my money would be on the contents of the e-mail being accurate…and if that’s the case…Mr. Lawwell has some serious explaining to do.
Good luck to the Res.12 guys…you deserve better.

  6. Oh aye, one wee detail. I heard a bit of the BBC Scotland sports program last night and someone mentioned that other than Davis and McGregor in their previous time at the club no one has played in a side that’s gone the distance and won a championship.

I don’t think anyone pointed out that neither has the manager. When his best opportunity presented itself both he and his team slipped.

    • Everyone plays 19 home and 19 away games.

This has been a major flaw in the system since the introduction of the split. On the first occasion it happened Dundee had to play Celtic three times away.

Since then we’ve been on the receiving end a couple of times. Most notably on the infamous Helicopter Sunday. In fact taking into account the seasons either side of that, neither of which Motherwell made the top six, Celtic only played them at home three times in TEN league meetings.

This season has looked from the start as though it was meant to happen like this. We will also have played on the plastic pitches at Hamilton and Livingston TWICE each before the split. Sevco once each.

  7. A distinct lack of stories in the SMM this week of £billion bids from the European superpower clubs for the world’s greatest superstar striker, Senor More-or-less.

Could it be that the penny is starting to drop on how highly he is actually rated? That NO ONE is actually prepared to take the double chance of spending ANY MONEY on him is maybe getting through to them.

I use the phrase DOUBLE CHANCE deliberately. Because that is what it is in reality. He has scored for fun in Scotland, against mostly smaller clubs.

Could he make the step up and do it on a bigger stage. I suspect to an extent he probably could although I doubt that he would be anywhere near as prolific. That is the first chance a club would be taking.

The second would involve a much greater leap of faith. Could he stay on the park long enough to score the number of goals a new club would expect. His disciplinary record in Scotland is awful. This is while performing for a club where the players are pretty much treated by match officials as kindly as one would treat an endagered species. Moving up a level would involve him coming up against fitter, mostly smarter and faster and certainly more technically gifted defenders than he regularly faces at present. We all know that one of the things that lights wee Alfie’s touch paper is not getting his own way. See where I’m going here? And these guys would very quickly work out which buttons to push to set that touch paper on fire.

  8. This offering has seemed to stir up quite a debate on just exactly how good Celtic are with statistics thrown around like chocolate grenades. I think it comes down to one thing and that is what do you want to watch on the park?. I remember having to switch the game off when Deila was in charge as it became unbearable. Rodgers started well but descended into that nonsense with the defence and the midfield “stealing the ball” for most of the game. I am not sure why Neil cannot go back to the style he had when he arrived and we started to beat teams 4 or 5 nil. I think the reason they changed was to do with the pressure to win the treble and a win at all costs attitude took over. The treble means nothing to me and I am sure to a lot of others, if the football is dire. For example, I would have happily given up the League Cup to Aberdeen or Hibs if we could have beaten Sevco 8 nil as I don’t think King would have recovered from that. Those few games when we were 5 up we seemed to pull back for some reason.
It may be an age thing as I grew up in an age of the Lions, Baxter, Law, Willie Henderson, Cruyff, Pele, Maradona and Larsson to name a few.
What do they teach at the training ground? Surely the likes of Micky Johnson could learn Cruyff’s turn, Law’s positioning sense and balance. (even if it meant ballet training) Pele’s back-heeling etc. Crerand’s long range passing.
All they seem to do is hit the ball straight at the keeper when on one on one.
Don’t they ever watch these guys for ideas?

    • I wonder if I can add that I think Scott Brown is an extremely skillful player. I have seen him walk the ball round 3 attackers and he has a great passing ability. Only yesterday he hit a 30 yd curving ball to Mickey Johnson. It was worthy of any of the greats. He just doesn’t seem to do it on a regular basis for which I blame the manager. He should know what is expected of him as he is clearly capable of raising his game.

      Reply
      • Sorry pal. I’ve clearly being watching the hoops AT LEAST as long as you, and if you’re just realising how well Brown can split a defence every bit as well as he can protect one, you really haven’t been paying attention for the last thirteen years. He’s done it at least once in probably every game he’s played since the first time he pulled on the jumper. Even in games when we’ve been under so much pressure he’s barely crossed the halfway line.

What troubles me more is that if Broony has a stinker, which EVERY PLAYER has occasionally, the whole team struggle. At his age we should not have to rely on him to that extent. I have no idea where his eventual replacement will come from but we need to find him quickly. It’s simply not reasonable to expect one player to carry such a burden.

        Reply
        • Ok I’ll bite. I am just saying I wonder if he realises how good he is. You say he has done it once in every game and that is dammed by faint praise. His first reaction ,certainly under Rodgers, was to hit the ball to the neaerst player whether sideways or back. All I am saying is he should always be looking to make that killer pass he has in his armoury although it depends on the forwards running off the ball and into space, a failing which is Celtics biggest problem. Ajer is another whose forward runs usually come to nought for lack of choice of a good final ball for the same reason.
Your earlier point was funny but I just included Larsson because I believe he is one of the few “modern” players who belongs in that company.

On a side note, sometimes the universe just bowls one underarm to you. I live in Newcastle and was getting the metro to work yesterday morning. Got to the station at about 7am, just me and one other person.

    Union jack gloves. Rangers scarf.

  10. Sorry to have to disagree with you Phil but you are way off the ball Re the money situation at ibrox. I will put it down to memory loss on your behalf. I don’t listen to Clyde or BBC Scotland football phone ins but I did read on twitter that Alex Rae said on one of them that there was substantial investment on it’s way to ibrox in January. I’m sure you even wrote about it yourself. It must have slipped your mind… I’m sure some one will no doubt remind him of this when indeed it happens in the next day or two.

The next thing the Celtic supporter should get stuck into the Celtic board about is the Glasgow derbies played at paradise. Sevco have a deal where they have sold all the image rights to all of their games. Celtic on the other hand obtained the rights for home games only to be shown live on CelticTV….

NOW wouldn’t it be awful if Celtic decided that they were only going to show the Glasgow derby on CelticTV on home games! 😝
Think of the mayhem it would cause 😀
For everyone that doesn’t have a Celtic season ticket I’m sure they wouldn’t mind paying for CelticTV for either a one off game or a yearly subscription.

From yesterday’s game they are complaining about the hatred in the Hearts supporters faces and the verbal abuse dished out to their players at every opportunity as well as it only being a matter of time before objects are thrown at their player’s. They even have the cheek to say you wont see or hear any of this at the sevco stadium maybe just a wee bit of friendly verbal banter but nothing to the extremes they get at every other ground they visit . Somebody has been wearing one of those funny hats again , it’s the only explanation. So the pitch invasion by their fans at Hampden when Hibs gubbed in the final and they kicked the you know what out of the Hibs fans on the pitch never happened. Or the coin one of their fans had thrown at split the refs assistants head open at the Livi game . Or the buckfsst bottles and golf balls thrown at Celtic players at the sevco stadium none of the above has never happened if you read this guys post . Oh dear .

Quite simply Hearts did to Sevco what Sevco did to Celtic. Stopped them playing and spraying passes around, closed them down at the back and took our chances ( something we have severely lacked of late ) Stendel will build a team to be reckoned with, and as it looks, Hearts will stay up and next season should be a belter.

Defoe had yards of a start whenever he had the ball but on every occasion the defender relieved him of a goal scoring opportunity. Sevco need to keep Morelos and they need to sell him at the same time and they do like to have their cake and eat it over at Circus Circus. The lights need to be kept on and his sale at any price will be paramountcy, and if he goes, Slippy is left with the players that he has just publicly thrown under a bus. My, my what a quandary!

The other was a number of pretend journalists at this so called newspaper picking fault with Kilmarnock manager and which teams need to strengthen before the transfer window shuts this was a dig at Celtic to bring in another winger and something about Hearts improving . But guess what nothing about sevco needing any players like another striker or even any pressure on Gerrard but plenty on the Killie boss . I can see a photo finish between Inter Milan and Barca for claiming the glory on signing M&M aka Madman Morelos.

The points tallies of the the teams immediately below, ie the teams competing for the final European place, are almost exactly the same as in the previous two seasons. Marginally worse than last season and marginally better than the season before.

Your observation on the European achievements of BOTH teams seems to be of no significance to many to many of those who post comments. Those achievements, by BOTH clubs, particularly those of Celtic, blow any notion of a descent into mediocrity right out of the water.

Without being at our best for the latter part of the first half of the Season we are further ahead in the League having secured more points and scored more s suggests to me that we have scope for further improvement in the second half of the Season whereas 2angers have probably peaked and can only at best sustain the levels already shown.
The result at Tyncastle points to this being a problem for them.
Our results meanwhile are an improved regardless of form.
As Aldous Huxley once said “Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored”.
Most Bloggers talk mince for the most part.
See JJ and James Forrest for clarification on that.

  24. Welcome as yesterday’s result was it still looks like the title will hinge on the remaining 2 Glasgow derbies. After our abject performances in both derbies before Christmas how confident can we be there will not be a repeat? Of course if Barcelona came in for Morelos ?

Certainly advantage Celtic but we must be much better than Saturday when Ross County created and missed 3 great chances in the first half with our defence all over the place, especially Simunovic.
    Copenhagen won’t be so forgiving.
No doubt the MSSM will have two versions of the potential Morelos sale this week.
There will be the ‘everybody has their price’ defence if he goes and if he stays it will be lauded as a triumph for the board and management whilst the money men ponder how they will settle the finance loan and the incoming bill from Sports Direct.
Maybe Kamara will go to Juventus for big money and save the day?

    • If Kamara was just half as good as the SMM would have us believe he is, he wouldn’t be at Sevco. He’d be with a big club.

He looks flashy and good in a team that are well on top and winning. In a game where the team are struggling and need the midfield to dig in, he is anonymous. He doesn’t want to know.

We all know the old saying. “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

Kamara does NOT come into that catagory.

  28. Premature jubilation: priceless. A blinking good Sunday! Celtic know how to win trophies. The other mob haven’t developed those skills yet. It’s all back on Celtic’s hands now. As ever Phil, your blog is a most welcome highlight!

  29. Dangerous to write them off, as Ross Wilson might bring in Wanyama Lol 😂
Has anybody else noticed. Wilson signed a whole host of ex Celts for Southampton.
A luxury he won’t be allowed now . They all done pretty well I believe.
When he left there was no hue and cry.
Southampton were in the bottom three of the table. He’s gone, there back up the table again winning, how strange is that?
Will he be able to bring in some big named player to give them a lift before the transfer door shuts?
Who cares we are clear again and have the funds to bury them again this season.
Hopefully some more joy before the window closes. PS Why is the Polish lad still sitting on the bench?

  30. Surely, as a responsible bus operator, you ensure that your right passengers get safely ONTO the bus? Looks like, as well as losing the plot, Mr Gerrard is in danger of having his PSV licence rescinded!

As for Alfie – although there are only a few days left of this transfer window, you can be sure that all manner of prestigious clubs will be slapping each other’s face with chequebook. Unfortunately, it looks like a move to Wuhan is off the table at the moment. Sad, really!!

  31. About Gerrard – there is a big flaw in his managerial abilities which is rearing it’s head again. When Rangers beat Celtic before the winter shut down, he celebrated as if he had won the league. So far Gerrard has won no trophy’s with Rangers. I remember Gerrard (as captain) doing the same with Liverpool. Let’s face it… Gerrard suffers from premature jubilation! 😄

  32. Well well well or should that be hearts hearts glorious hearts???

I’m glad we haven’t had the chance to build that bonfire and stick the Jambos in the middle.

Slippy throwing his players under the bus, again, you know what they say about buses? Waiting on one and three show up.

Well done Stendel you socked it to them.
