Why Billy and Mikey both made smart choices

This week has been very much a tale of two wunderkinds in Glasgow.

One of them left and the other signed a three-year deal to remain at his club.

The Sevco youngster packed his bags and the lad in the Hoops decided that it was better to be a Bhoy than anything else.

Billy the kid clearly thinks that the Chelsea academy is a better bet than being around the Sevco first team squad next season.

At the same time as they were snapping up young Gilmour, the Stamford Bridge folk made a determined move for Celtic youngster Mikey Johnstone.

However, there was never any chance that the lad would leave the Champions of Scotland for the prestigious London club.

The young winger is well advised and he knows that there is a career progression path at Celtic.

At the recent match against the St Johnstone the champions had five academy graduates involved in the proceedings:

Forrest, Johnstone, McGregor, Ralston, and Tierney.

Quite simply any talented kid at Celtic can see a clear pathway to the first team under Brendan Rodgers.

However, at the Espanyol of Glasgow life is a combination of on-field embarrassment and off-field chaos.

That isn’t likely to change while Billy Gilmour is playing football.

He is part of Generation Sevco.

Consequently, leaving Ibrox is the smart move for any talented kid.

So I don’t blame the lad for getting out of Sevco.

It is the dead end of Planet Fitba.

The fee that the Holding Company vehicle will receive from Chelsea will not cover the losses for one month at the five-year-old club.

You see dear reader, Sevco is a loss making business without a credit line from a bank.

Perhaps the same Ibrox source that has been briefing me recently may have also been speaking to young Billy and his representatives.

If that is the case then I can fully understand why the kid has said goodbye to the World Class Breakfasts at Murray Park.

  1. City dominance is fully achieved when one team buys the best talent directly from the other.

There’s no one at Sevco at the moment we would want but when this does eventually happen there will be no escape for its supporters from the reality of where their club sits in relation to Celtic in this country.

    • Email notification hasn’t worked for me for several weeks. It’s a shame cos it’s nice to get these nuggets hot off the press (not the Scottish press obviously) !

  2. Whatever happened to the last great Sevco prospect that was sold off to an English outfit – Lewis McLeod?
Poor lad was bummed up by the SMSM and fast tracked into the Scotland squad to bump up his transfer fee.
That fee however probably helped Sevco cover losses for a couple of months.
Hope the lad is progressing well – he, like young Gilmour, is lucky to get away from that shambles.

    • From Wikipedia…
His career suffered after his move to Brentford after he tripped over a twig and later accidentally steeped into a rabbit hole.

  3. This has been a masterclass in how to run a football club. Had Brendan not signed an extended contract then these kids might not have stayed. The important point being BR did sign and so did the talent. In Brendan we trust HH

  4. I even doubt that Gilmour chose to move on of his on accord. I reckon it was sugar-coated, and his mind was manipulated just so’s Sevco could raise a bit of cash while they wait for RB Leipzig to pony up the £6 million for young McKay.
