The Fall of the House of Desmond?

Today I spoke with a man who was in the room when Celtic was saved in 1994.

In my opinion, David Low is a serious man to be treated with respect.

When I described him as such today, he chuckled.

No explanation was required as we’re both sworn-in members of the Godfather family.

As we started to discuss the current shambles at Celtic, I said:

“How did things get so far?

I don’t know.

It was so unfortunate.

So unnecessary.”

He immediately recognised Don Vito’s opening remarks to the Commission.

These were the words of a strategic thinker.

Unfortunately, Celtic’s current Don is behaving more like Sonny on the Causeway.

David suggested that I should speak with Duncan Smillie, who is chairman of Celtic  Supporters Limited.

Regular readers may recall an interview I had with him last August.

Duncan sent me the following statement:

More so than ever, Celtic supporters and shareholders need a safe place to stand behind should the time come where our club has to be saved; that place is Celtic Supporters Limited (CSL).

Our club was saved before, and one of our board members was literally in the room with Fergus McCann when that happened.

We are not a protest group; we are a professional organisation with a sole purpose: creating a voting block of shares big enough to mobilise if the time comes, and it will!

We are evolution, not revolution, maybe not the sexy frontline rebels, but we’re in the background bringing together the silent majority under one banner, CSL .

We already have proxy commitment for over 1 million shares and have had several conversations with larger shareholders.

As a fanbase, we have more power than many, including our board, think.

Change is coming, not buying pies isn’t going to shift this board, we need a different approach than the smoking out M.O. of the 90s.

As Duncan states, the work of the CSL isn’t the stuff of “sexy frontline rebels”.

However, it is just this type of shareholder insurgency that will, in due course, concern Celtic’s de facto owner.

It is clear that the status quo isn’t an option going forward.

That said, this isn’t 1994.

What confronts the Celtic support in 2025 is entirely different from the days when your humble correspondent was out in the car park instead of going through the turnstiles.

We KNEW that he could have a tangible impact on the old board, who didn’t have a receptacle capable of collecting their entitled urine.

So, what worked for regime change 31 years ago won’t work now.

Consequently, a new strategy is required.

I think that the guys at CSL might have an essential part of the answer.
