John Bennett

When a prominent figure steps down from a position on health grounds, even the most inquisitive journalist must take a step back.

I had known for some time the chairman of the Ibrox club was under intolerable pressure.

Consequently, something had to give.

I now believe the decision was made yesterday when it became discernible that he couldn’t continue in the role.

The club statement itself says all that is required at this juncture.

It is worth noting that Mr Bennett was and remains a genuine adherent of the Ibrox franchise.

In attempting to handle so many, often competing, roles, he proved that this was no blazer kisser in the Blue Room.

Though not surprising, his departure is yet another piece of public data about the dysfunctional nature of the club, which was created in 2012.

Indeed, the comparison with the quiet efficiency across the city could not be more different.

Mr Bennett, a highly successful business person, knows that the financial juggernaut at Parkhead is now uncatchable.

  1. Dangerous times have arrived at ibrox. In just over 12 years they have shot through the wealth of all the “rangers minded” investors. What now? There are no more wealthy blue noses stupid enough to put their wealth on the line, so that leaves the piranhas and sharks on the less scrupulous side of the financial world. Beware a White Knight (shouldn’t that be blue?) offering investment. Before you know it, The stadium is collateral for a loan. Next, the loan cannot be paid back. “How much am I offered for a pent house address on Edmiston Drive?”

  2. Regardless of his position at Sevco , it is only fair & proper to wish him a speedy recovery for the sake of his family & friends. This development says as much about the health of Sevco as it does about said former Chairman, could this be the ‘beginning of the end’ for Sevco…?? I t seems that there is no person on this current board who can correct the ‘listing badly’ HMS Sevco & there are not enough life rafts available for all participants, the proverbial sh•t might be about to hit the fan @ get very messy indeed, year end accounts could be the unmissable ‘iceberg’….📉

  3. Peace be upon him.

May he reach a Zen like state of mind, being fully present, free from the constraints of the ego, and open to the wisdom of the universe.

  4. The pressure on him must be enormous.
Despite pouring large sums of his own, hard earned cash into this club, it is never enough.
The desire to replicate the nineties, and the pandering to the most base level of their support, will sap the health of any individual.
I wish him well as I would to anyone under stress.
He leaves behind a club desperately trying to define itself. No longer “The world’s most successful club” but “the first club to win fifty titles” will they downsize even further to “the first club/company to go bust twice”.
Now their media buddies will talk about investment. This from people who do not understand what the term investment means. They can’t comprehend that when someone puts something in then they want something back and that something isn’t a tie, a blazer, or a pair of brogues. They want a business model that doesn’t involve them
having to write a large check every three months. They want a dividend, or another return on that investment.
I’ve said for years that this isn’t a business, it’s a charity which sucks every last penny from every investor and when the people have no money left they’re thrown aside because they aren’t staunch enough.

  5. The sharks are circling with the glib and shameless liar heading the pack .
Mr Bennet has got out at the right time to protect his health .
It must be a horrible toxic environment to work in on a daily basis .
As others have found out and sensibly got out .
As ever their fan base is kept in mushroom mode by the SMSM kept in dark and fed shit .
See how well that went in 2012

  6. Scottish football is full of directors and chairmen who spend their personal wealth to keep the lights on at their local clubs. Sometimes they are driven by ego and sometimes by a sense of duty. It saddens me that after giving so much to Sevco, John Bennett seems to have had so little fun and received so little gratitude. I may dislike their klub but at an individual level I wish their players, officials and supporters well. Life is short and we only get one go at it.

  7. I wish this gentleman all the best,he is unfortunately the latest victim of a club appeasing a sect like support, no chairman,no ceo , no trophies, a club swirling round the drain of insolvency ready to down,

    • “…sect like support”…is exactly the cause of their ills.

Demanding, demeaning , obnoxious etc. Yet GULLIBLE

They got rid of van Brockhurst, Beale, Murty! Warburton only because of poor Glasgow Derby results.
Gerrard had the benefit of empty stadiums…

      Schadenfreude? YOU BET.

Bennett’s recovery depends on the toll the klan have inflicted.

  8. John Bennett struck me as being a decent guy in an impossible role trying to correct the mistakes created by his predecessors. He stepped away from his successful business career to concentrate full time to serve the club he supported as a young boy. I wish him the very best in the future.
