Ten cup finals and a funeral

It is worth remembering that the decision to appoint Brendan Rodgers was down to one person, Dermot Desmond.

Of course, last summer, other people in the building had their own choices to replace Ange.

However, should anyone need reminding, the Irish businessman is THE Celtic boss.

Anything else is just noise.

My information is that the billionaire, and yes, he’s a real one, is currently very focused on ensuring that his managerial choice has no internal obstacles to getting the job done.

Consequently, the news that Lawwell Jnr is no longer at Celtic shouldn’t surprise regular readers.

In fairness, I’m sure he tried his best.

Any notions of that particular family dynasty at Parkhead have been extinguished.

Moreover, I will be surprised if Daddy Lawwell is still club chairman by the time of the next AGM.

Family dynasties, real or imagined, die just as surely as empires do.

Next up is a trip to the John Wilson Arena.

Sevco’s low-calorie cousins at close quarters is never a pleasant prospect.

However, get past them, then it’s nine in a row to the title.

That’s the challenge.

Indeed, the performance against Dundee resembled what Brendan’s relentless Celtic team regularly produced in 2017 and 2018.

I’m told that the demolition on Wednesday was witnessed by Ireland’s interim coach, John O’Shea.

Apparently, he was mightily impressed by his two lads in the Hoops.

He also thought that the rejuvenated Alistair Johnston and the young Korean winger Yang worked well together on the right flank.

These are the players that Brendan has to work with now until the summer.

It is self-evident that the recruitment team failed Rodgers and Celtic in the January window.

For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Desmond doesn’t like failure.

  1. It seems beyond any doubt whatever that Lawwell Snr’s return to the club was a Desmond call as well. In fact, it’s utterly unimaginable that it could have been anything else. Celtic is, as you say, essentially a one-man show. For me, this is at the root of everything that is rotten at the club; it is the polar opposite of how well-run modern football clubs operate. Desmond is the problem and we’ll be in the dark ages for as long as he’s at the centre.

But, for now, it is what it is. If you’re going to be a despot, there’s no point letting things slide.

This afternoon’s result certainly warms the heart. A win at Tynecastle is vital.

  2. I see the fishal statement is still peddling the myth that he was was the Head of Recruitment at City and he was the personal pick of Ange.

He was, in fact, the Content Manager (web admin?) and given that Daddy Lawwell has links with CFG over a long time, with a procession of cast-offs heading our way, plus the nepotism then clearly this was our ex-Manager’s doing. 🙂

Although this is a start, it can’t be seen as a success until a proper appointment is made ie not our high heid yin failures, who would only appoint another CFG reject or from an agent, similarly looking to offload someone.

  3. Would love to see Daddy Lawwell punted before the next AGM,

but, you’d think if DD was indeed serious about ‘a clear out’,

then PL would need to go now?

Why would you want PL anywhere near the club come the summer,

    – and in a position to unduly influence a new Recruitment team…?

Is the boy Lawwell just the sacificial lamb to ensure smoother ST’s renewal?

PL should have been out the door BEFORE ML was punted.

Can’t help feeling cynical: doubt PL is going anywhere. 🙁

  5. Totally agree . Nicholson has allowed himself to be silenced by Lawell snr. I think both of their positions are now untenable .
PS take Brian Wilson with them.

  6. I’m sure we would all like Lawwell Snr to be adiosed, unfortunately there are none of his actual fingerprints on our shambolic windows, so he is more than happy for Jnr to be blamed and gone.
With a daddy like that it’s no wonder he moved out of Lawwell Towers as soon as he could.
Cmon DD, its time to cut yer puppet’s strings.

  7. It is apity that one individual, who really shouldn’t have control on a daily basis, has exerted so much influence on the club.
That also doesn’t reflect well on the current Chief Executive if he was nullified by someone who shouldn’t have been involved in the day to day running of the club.
