James Dornan MSP submits Holyrood motion calling for SFA reform

Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true!

This was just sent to me by James Dornan, MSP.

Calling for SFA Transparency

  • Submitted by: James Dornan, Glasgow Cathcart, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 05 January 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-11781

That the Parliament supports recent reported moves by Glasgow Rangers FC to get the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to release the conversations by video assistant referee (VAR) officials during the recent game against Celtic FC; recognises what it sees as the longstanding culture of secrecy that exists within the ruling hierarchy of Scottish football; urges the SFA to ensure that all VAR decisions, and any other decisions requested by a club involved, are made publicly available on such a request, and believes that, if the SFA and Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) continue with what it considers is their ongoing culture of secrecy, then there is a need to consider an independent regulator for football, similar to the plans reportedly due to be introduced into the UK Parliament, but one which would be unique to the circumstances of Scottish football.

As regular readers will know, it is my view that the Tracey Crouch proposals, currently going through Westminster, should be taken on board by the Edinburgh parliament.

If that happens, then the Sevco High Command will be in DUP/Brexit territory in the Own Goal Olympics.

  1. A summit of all concerned parties in the top league in Scotland should be convened with a high ranking lawyer as chairperson, and all grievances since introduction of VAR should be aired. One team, yes one team, will have much to answer-double handball by Golden,Hearts denied a penalty several weeks back,Aberdeen denied 2 penalties in a major cup final,Celtic and Motherwell both denied penalties in recent games against the Tribute Act-the list goes on and on!

  2. A complete master stroke!

There’s a painful lesson about to be taught to someone who hasn’t war gamed their own manoeuvres!

Take a bow James Dornan 👏

  3. At long last, the potential gamechanger we have been waiting for. The tribute act may have just mistakenly opened a pandora’s box through short sightedness and their usual degree of rage, mainly caused by the arrogance and entitlement not deserving of a 12 year old club, with only 3 major trophies to its name.

  4. Probably the first time I’v said this about Mr Dornan, but that’s impressive. Whilst we’ve had some fun with the meltdown that’s occurred since the Derby, there’s a part of me that’s concerned what it will cost in terms of decisions going forwards. What honest (no laughing) decent official would want to be next in the Ibrox hit list, given what we’ve just witnessed with Willie Collum?
If only Celtic had someone of real leadership we’d have already jumped on this and added to the momentum.

    • They had a penalty awarded against them at Ibrox for first time in yonks.
Rangers may actually have pissed off officials with their open attack.

      • You might not be far off the mark there. People will will only take so much. Even off those they love. The line between love and hate, is every bit as fine as the one between genius and insanity.

  5. And if this can be applied retroactively we can find out why Sevco didn’t concede a penalty for 74 matches. Bring it on!

  6. To push your earlier Punic Wars analogy beyond breaking point, Hannibal would now be lighting his cigar saying “l love it when a plan comes together!”….

…..quicker straight red than Balogun for that, right?!

But seriously, did they never consider the ramifications of what they were demanding? Not even for a second? Because if this gathers momentum among other clubs when there is no actual football to distract them, there is a possibility it could actually happen! ‘Twould be the mother and illegitimate father of all Pyrrhic Victories…..

  7. Why stop there, let’s go full glasnost !……..referees should also have to declare which team they support to preclude them from unconscious bias and genuine mistakes.

  8. “The longstanding culture of secrecy that exists within the ruling hierarchy of Scottish football” is such a beautiful accusation to come from the architects of the infamous 5 way agreement . So in the interests of the ongoing culture of secrecy that exists within the ruling hierarchy of Scottish football can we see that 5 way agreement along with the VAR tapes ? As you said ” be careful what you wish for lest it comes true”
