The piñata has left the building

In life, timing is usually everything.

With that in mind, a hat tip to Sevco’s ex-director of football.

Mr Ross Wilson pulled a great bit of transfer business out of the hat when he got himself a move to the City Ground!

In fairness, he got his timing spot on.

If he had remained in post at the basket of assets, he would have had to preside over the contractual shit show in the summer.

Two of the club’s main assets look set to leave for zilch.

My information is that the signing of Todd Cantwell was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Kent and his agent.

The narrative proffered in the contract talks was that there were no funds for a significant wage rise.

Enter stage left the lad from Norwich City.

I’m told that the negotiations broke down after that.

The ex-Liverpool starlet will almost certainly now leave Ibrox will leave for no transfer fee.

Mr Wilson was facing a summer where he had, in relative terms, a minuscule transfer budget and the imposition of a wage structure that was finally-gasp-sustainable.

The latter innovation is, of course, a result of UEFA’s insistence on the new FSR dispensation.

As well as all of that, there is the human angle.

The Ibrox klanbase was pillorying Mr Wilson as the author of all their recruitment misfortunes.

The reality is that the resource landscape meant that another real find like Calvin Bassey was highly unlikely.

I’m told that when Mr Wilson left the building, he took a lot of important stuff with him, all contained in his head.

The thing is, the new guy at Forest actually knows his stuff.

Some in the Blue Room hope he will be a conduit for some of their B team on loan to Sevco.

The City Ground outfit will probably need to survive in the EPL for that to happen.

What will be interesting is if players that have already been identified for Sevco by Mr Wilson still fancy playing their trade at Ibrox next season.

Whatever challenges his new role throws up, he won’t be a piñata for psychologically unbalanced fans who see nothing wrong in venerating a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

That has to be a positive for  Mr Wilson.

I wish him well.

  1. Out of context but for the benefit of any lurkers…the title this year will equal the number of OUTRIGHT titles won by the previous Rangers club. We will be setting a new record with the 54th.

    • If Rangers had been stripped of the titles they won when playing unregistered players and the titles had been awarded to runners up – which is what would have happened anywhere else in the world – then Celtic would have long eclipsed them.

      • The imperfectly registered charge was the means of dodging the more serious one in Art5 of SFA Articles to act with utmost good faith to fellow clubs.
They failed to do that for 10 years but such a charge would have made it impossible to keep them in the game but ebts were not unlawfully used until SC said so in 2017.
However even under the SPL LNS Commision evidence of dishonesty in HMRC letters was kept from investigating SPL lawyers by Rangers administrators. Evidence which, had it been provided would have shown evidence of dishonesty and suggestions of fraudulent behaviour made by HMRC.
        A fix from the beginning.

    • The League / Scottish Cup / League Cup trophy total is also getting very close between Celtic and Rangers (plural).

  2. It would be quite amusing if both Kent & Morelos now signed for Forest.
Also, they are able to sign a contract any day before season end.
And they would then, of course, be leaving the sinking ship for hee-haw!
Now, that would be funny: watching the bears and the SMSM self-combust at the ‘treachery’ ! 🙂

    • That really appeals to my sense of humour Bob. Nice one.
WRT Kent and Morelos I’ve never rated either of them as footballers OR human beings. A pair of thugs totally suited to the Ibrox mentality and tolerated (exonerated even?) by all that midden’s acolytes…….but, the thought of them going to ‘Forest For Free’ is delicious and also ‘trumps’ their FF thingy. If I may, as they’ll both be out of contract and are inferior footballers/people and unlikely to be sought after, how about this? Wilson takes them ON TRIAL to Forest and then tells them to their angry faces, “You’re absolutely NOT what I’m looking for!”
      Oh, please, pretty please……….:-)
