Respecting the facts at Ibrox

Apparently, Union Saint Gilloise defender Siebe Van der Heyden  has been

 “ a touch disrespectful”.

That’s the opinion of Sevco’s John Lundstram.

Here he is at the start of this presser (0:20).

Now, here’s what Van der Heyden actually said:

“I’m not scared. I’m really confident in my team but we know it will be hell for us there. We know there will be 50,000 fans at Ibrox screaming at us for 90 minutes.

“We have to be concentrated from the beginning. The first 20 minutes especially will be very important for us to stay in our shape and not switch off.

“The match on Tuesday was fantastic. The whole team was concentrated from the start, which was necessary against a very good opponent. Rangers made it to the Europa League Final last year so we had to be fully aware for the whole match.

“It was a great result for the team but there is still a game waiting for us in Glasgow and it will be very tough for us, even with a 2-0 lead.”

Dear reader, anyone who sees anything disrespectful in those comments is putting in a hard shift.

Of course, sometimes pressure makes people imagine stuff.

They see a slight that just isn’t there.

If that is the case with Mr Lundstram, then he is suffering from the same thing that is currently afflicting the chaps in the Blue Room.

As of this morning, when I spoke to a very well-placed source, it is fair to say that the Sevco High Command are very eager to get the € 5 million on offer for getting through to the next round.

Their most recent conclave focussed on the potential cost of failure against the Belgians and the implications for the squad.

A victory tomorrow night would also, of course, give them another sell-out crowd at the stadium Mr John Brown played for.

For the avoidance of doubt, this isn’t an existential issue like the European failures were for the original Rangers in their final season (2011-2012).

However, when the current Ibrox operation is running at a monthly loss, every little helps.

I hope that in pointing out those incontrovertible facts of their finances that I haven’t been disrespectful.

  1. A glorious victory for the boys in blue against a team that most of us had never heard of.
Let’s see how the play off game goes against PSV, a different scenario completely.

  3. It is what they motivate themselves by. Hate and acowling.
Watch when they ever score there is not a smile in the stands it Is scowls and grunts.
That’ is why the hun media were slating Celtic at the weekend. For Celebrating with joy and happiness at the victory.

  4. The Belgians made plenty of chances in the first leg so with Rangers chasing the game there’s no reason why the away team can’t grab a goal tonight, making life very difficult for the home team.

  5. Is it put in their contracts when they sign for this club that they must toe the party line and be full of entitlement .
Nothing in what was said by the Belgian player was disrespectful at all .
All this has done is make Lundstrum look bitter and stupid.
I pray the Belgian team ram his stupid comment down his throat and go on to qualify for next round .

  6. You very clearly are being disrespectful. You’ve questioned the interpretation of the facts by a sevco player. Those fine upstanding citizens are beyond reproach. To fail to accept as gospel, ANY word uttered, by ANY member of that fine body of men, is blatantly disrespectful. In fact it probably makes you a bigot.

Ach don’t worry about it. I’m sure you’ll get over it. I did.

When I asked a couple of sevconians if the Orange Order existed for any purpose other than spreading anti Catholic hatred, they didn’t answer my question, they simply branded me a bigot for asking such a question.

As I said, I got over it.

    Quickly.

  7. Along with my first ever post to your wonderful website Phil – Another first will be willing a Union to win – A Belgian Football team of course !

Please Please Sevco be out of The Champions League tonight – preferably by 9.40pm (although extra time and penalties would be awesome if it was guaranteed they’d lose)…

I’ll probably do a score check on the hour and if it’s going Union’s way – I might just be tempted to listen in on the rancid BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound as the pain will be beautifully palpable !

If they go out – I expect one or several of their fans will do damage to one of the visiting players by way of missile throwing due to being hyped up by Lunstram’s irresponsible comments, though for the sake of player safety hopefully it doesn’t happen, but hoping with every sinew of my fibre that the most certainly exit the competition at this stage !

  8. If Karma is paying attention,
sevco will be punted out of the CL qualifiers tomorrow.

Followed by a furious, inter-Ibrox blame game.

A club invented from the liquidated remnants of an industrial-scale cheating club,

    deserves absolutely nothing! 🙂

    • Unfortunately the world is half full of those who DON’T get the rewards, good or bad, they deserve. It’s also equally half full of those who DO get rewards that they don’t deserve, good or bad.

I firmly believe that the first goal, particularly if it comes early will decide the direction of tonight’s tie. An early goal for sevco would, I personally believe, give them the momentum to see the tie out.

I also believe that an early goal for the Belgians would settle any nerves they may have AND immediately get the crowd on to Sevco’s backs.

For a bunch of so-called loyalists, they can be awful short on loyalty.

It’s also important not to show sevco any more than minimal respect. It’s the most they deserve.

  9. The huns that can read properly will read what was actually said and decide that something was lost in the translation. The other 99% will register Lundstram’s disrespectful accusation, swallow it hook line and sinker and turn up at the Rat Pit on Tuesday night baying for blood. Their angry and hateful mood will be exactly the emotions that the Ibrox Club intended for them to show. The hate pouring from the stands is exactly what they require in order to intimidate the Belgian players. What a vile Club, let’s hope that none of the opposition fans are attacked due to this hateful rabble rousing.

  10. They probably mean respect like being the first major team to reach its 150th, ignoring twice European Champions, Nottingham Forrest and the perennial issue of claiming another team’s 140 year history to add to their 10.
