I’m indebted to my egg-chasing buddy for answering a question that I put to him today.
Phil, I have checked out Celtic accounts, full disclosure to see if they break out first-team squad numbers but they do not.
Here is what I have got.
Rangers staff costs year to 30 June 2020 £43.3m
Rangers staff costs year to 30 June 2021 £47.7m
First-team squad to 30 June 2020 £29.7m
First-team squad to 30 June 2021 £33.5m
Celtic staff costs year to 30 June 2020 £54.3m
Celtic staff costs year to 30 June 2021 £49.3m
You will see that the gap was tiny in the year to 30 June 2021.
Unfortunately Celtic does not pull out first-team squad costs.
Just to be clear about the import of the foregoing I called him when I received this and sought further clarification.
He said that I was correct to focus on the fact that the Sevco budget had only been achieved via external finance.
What Celtic spends on players is generated from within the business that’s the crucial point.
Therefore, what is happening at Parkhead is sustainable.
It is glaringly obvious that the Sevco High Command has bet the farm on getting to the Champions League Group Stages.
They haven’t made it.
That is why I’m now convinced that the defeat to Celtic last Sunday is the most consequential football match for the Ibrox brand since Malmo 1-Ranger 1 in August 2011.

I think that’s a good answer…

Can someone tell me where they are still getting the money from to stay afloat? Millions in debt, millions to pay out to MAS, ever-diluting shares being produced on a regular basis and another dozen players that will need to be bought again next season if GVB insists. I can’t believe the current investors can continue if they are still selling shares to make the wages or pay the leccy bill. Foreign investors are now unlikely to be interested after seeing what the team and it’s supporters are capable of on Sunday but if it’s only a 10 point deduction for going into administration then they would be as well doing it now. HH
Alistair, Celtic will be the first club to reach 60 titles, it’s just a matter of time, rangers title haul stopped at 54.
53 1/2…… Their first title was shared with Dumbarton, although only because no provision had been made to separate teams who were level on points. By any other measure the title belonged to Dumbarton. They scored more goals and conceded fewer.
Love the irony of the banner photo Phil, but reading this over breakfast and have gone off my porridge!
It appears the message from the FA today is that if rangers fans continue to throw bottles on to the park , no action will be taken against rangers, as we say in Glasgow : you couldny make it up!!
Surely they’ll only be allowed to do that if they shout “F*** the pope” whilst throwing ?
Has everyone forgotten that they will directly qualify for next season’s Champions League Group stage when they win this season’s Europa League?
😉
I.m guessing the punter who says the New Co would qualify directly into the UCL, remembered to big up the IF part of the mibbees aye mibbees naw rhetoric
That is indeed an eye opener.
From the numbers quoted above: during a pandemic / closed grounds;
RIFC INCREASED staff costs by c.10%
whereas
CFC DECREASED staff costs by c.10%
That is just absolutely mental and reckless from the Ibrox lot !
They deserve everything that’s coming… 🙂
They still have a route to the CL via Europa league (no sniggering, their chances of winning are small but not yet zero). Perhaps we will see a focus shift (certainly what I’d be doing in their place) and associated drop in league form/intensity. The disappointing fact is (for banter and also FFP) they have people willing to take the hit still.
As mentioned here before the best thing Scottish football could do is divorce itself from Sky and set up spfl TV. Either on setanta esque subscription or as a ppv. I would absolutely subscribe and I’d watch some of the other games too. The issue with Sky is people feel like watching football and what’s on is Watford vs Accrington Stanley so that’s what they watch, viewership goes up and the justification of the prostitute leagues continue. With Spfl TV what’s on would be Dundee vs Livingston so people would watch it, maybe to see what the team their team plays next is like. Sky get none of our money to subsidise the divas. Our game grows in status, even just locally and we (over time) can sell it with good audience figures for a much better sum. The fact Donkey Asster and Co are not doing this tells you exactly how bent the system is. They don’t give a single fig about Scottish football, they care about keeping the 2 Glasgow sides strong, as if that’s the only valuable thing we have. It’s short sighted, demeaning and harmful for the game.
Proper Celtic fans can hope, but I think you’ll find the Celtic board will see it differently.
Only until we can find a revenue stream away from Sly sports (not a typo) will we find our true place in world football. HH
Wow. That’s a big statement and I know it’s not made lightly. Martin G said about it being just a ten point deduction, wouldn’t it prevent them from competing in Europe too? Maybe Celtic will be the first club in Scotland to reach 60 titles.
Numbers aside for these are not my shekels.
Why wouldn’t a club be at the very least sanctioned, called out after Sunday’s game?
Some message.
Cheers Phil/Rugger Guy
Phil I totally agree with you I think we may look back on that result and say that was the fateful blow
I hope so because it’s the only way to stop the hate and bigotry
the blue room won’t stop it because they believe in it as much as there sick fans do that is clear.
the football authorities are just as bad,the sooner they are gone for good the better
As long as someone is willing to bail them out they will continue, and the current rules are if an insolvency event happens, its only a 10 point deduction, if I’m not mistaken.
I think the penalty changed to 15 points in 2015, with a further 5 points in the following season.
It’s a 15 point reduction (25 pts if it’s a 2nd insolvency event within 5 years) I am getting palpitations with people saying they haven’t made the CL group stages , firstly this league has not been won yet and if the roles were reversed I wouldn’t be giving up . Secondly they can still make the CL group stages by being successful in the qualifying rounds and lastly the outside bet of winning the europa league. The second of these 3 possibilities seems their best chance but to do so means they need to hold on to their most sellable assets which will entail giving them new and improved deals which increases expenditure while cutting off income. As well as Ashley , Hummel , Elite and memorial walls seeking compensation there are still outstanding transfer fees and probably most importantly deferred taxes from the Covid situation due to be paid back. Then there is Dave stirring the proverbial in the background
