Glasgow City Council motion anti-Irish racism

Here is text of a motion tabled for next Thursday’s meeting of Glasgow City Council.

“Council utterly condemns the scenes of anti-Irish racism once again witnessed on the streets of Glasgow and extends our full support and solidarity to the Irish community in Scotland and assures them that they and everyone who calls Glasgow their home is a valued member of our society.

“Council commends the An Gorta Mór Committee on the recent unveiling of the memorial to those who lost their lives or were forced to emigrate during The Great Hunger, many of whom made Glasgow their home and have contributed greatly to the fabric of our city. This, in addition to the Glasgow Green memorial, which involved both the Irish Government and noted historian Tom Devine, are fitting tributes to this period of history which has shaped our city.

“Council agrees that this racism on our streets cannot be allowed to go on and calls on the Leader of Glasgow City Council to write to Scottish Government and Police Scotland requesting that they address these concerns and work with Glasgow City Council and the people of Glasgow to remove these outpourings of hate from our city.”

Dear reader, this is what progress looks like.

  1. They are a hate group group paul , if any of these marches are on your route or that of any other decent citizen , video it . See how many football jerseys of any spfl clubs are on display ( guess) then post it everywhere . As you say phil the momentum is there

  2. Anti-Irish feeling is an addictive, antisocial pastime for these people and like smoking, once the government takes “agin” it is doomed. However if Tom Devine is right and it does not represent Scotland as a whole then quite a lot of people suffered from the passive variety.

  3. Society on the whole will eventually leave these knuckle dragging drongos behind.
Stuck somewhere in the 17th Century with views and beliefs that no longer exist or deemed relevant in any part of a modern Society.

Ps Britannia doesn’t even rule the Channel P&O’s got that squared away 👍🏼

      • Finally Scotland’s dark secret is being unveiled to a larger audience.
The UK national media and media further afield are on message, absolutely shaming the local media who for years have looked the other way or used the sectarian label to hide behind.
Police Scotland has being called out on this at last.
In cities and countries throughout the world parades are joyful affairs celebrating culture and open to all.
If their is wider media cover of the upcoming Orange parades and its followers, in and around Glasgow in particular, the world will see and hear something quite the opposite.
There is a reason why on marching days thousands of shoppers normally thronging the city centre decide to stay at home.

      • What a fabulous opportunity to trot out the old “Six of one half a dozen of the other” diatribe that is generally dished out when it comes down to those in Authority addressing the issues of “Sectarianism “ – ANTI IRISH RACISM in Scotland 🤷🏻‍♂️
Please refrain from interacting with theses Parades and let the world see these knuckled draggers from a bygone era for what they actually are.

They can roll a shite in glitter all they want but it is by definition still only a shite rolled in glitter.
If that’s your idea of a culture then by all means fill your boots Jim 👍🏼

    • There is not much the council can do about the marches.
The Orange Order will have to be proscribed as a hate group, then their marches could be banned.
Otherwise they have a democratic right to assemble
