Mountain climbing in Armenia

Mr Gerrard will take the slenderest of leads to Western Asia next week.

Every successful team needed players who stick out as individuals, and young Ryan Kent certainly did that tonight.

If you don’t believe me, then look at the featured image!

When Mr Gerrard and his players land in Yerevan, they will have sight of Mount Ararat.

The peak is famous for being the putative resting place of Noah’s Ark after the biblical flood.

When Sevco were drawn against Alashkert, I contacted a buddy in the UEFA set-up to ask them about the next foreign visitors to Ibrox.

He, in turn, contacted an associate in the Armenian capital, and this pic was taken from an office window showing where Noah was reputed to have ended his voyage of survival.

I was grateful for this instantaneous service!

As a small child, I was captivated by the story of the animals going in two by two.

Of course, that’s all very well if you’re into that Old Testament stuff.

However, this sceptical old contrarian now prefers the more historically grounded Sumerian tale of Gilgamesh.

The biblical tale did rather require the two selected pairs from every species to be rather well behaved on board  Noah’s craft.

It also didn’t say much of the genetic diversity once the floodwaters had receded and the Ark had come to rest.

I suspect that the other side of Glasgow will probably be relatively sanguine about this result tonight.

The one-nil scoreline for Sevco means that Mr Gerrard will have to take a full-strength squad to the South Caucasus.

Only three days later, his charges will have to cope with Angeball.

Après le deluge and all that…

  2. To be fair Lundstram will be well rested for AngeBall, as he won’t need to travel to Armenia and back. And unlike last night he will be able to kick opposition players up in the air without fear of facing one let alone two yellow cards. Hopefully Kyogo will be too quick for him but……

  3. Coincidentally, I was evacuated from Kabul to Yerevan a few weeks ago, and was hoping to wear my Celtic top behind the goals with the home support. 🙂

Alas, I am back in sunny Scotland just now and will miss the away tie.

One thing I can confirm though: it is bl00dy hot out there and was 30+ when I left on Wednesday.

And the beers are ridiculously cheap… [c.£1.20 in a pub / restaurant].

  4. Animals do what animals do.

Our own brand of wild beasts like to urinate and defecate on holy shrines, they froth at the mouth and insult heads of religious institutions, they riot in public squares while terrifying the local population.

Meanwhile our other less intimidating wild animals are gratefully locked away in zoo cages for their own protection, away from the angry blue nosed breeds that maraud our shores.

Noah’s Ark would not have survived with THEM on board, they don’t travel too far or too well without erupting and causing carnage.

God love them, for they are animals and they know no better.

  5. I really can’t see them NOT going through. The Armenians looked toothless.

On Kent. Is THAT actually allowed. I was under the impression that other than the number on the back of the shirt, all outfield players had to wear identical strips.

  6. UEFA rule 48.03 No other visible mark or insignia of the club, member association, sponsor,
manufacturer or third party will be permitted without the prior written consent
    of the UEFA Administration.

Oops, Will Ryan Kent’s mistake be pointed out smartly to the Armenians who could then claim a 0-3 penalty result

    • It’s a 6 hour flight from Glasgow to Armenia and the expected day time temperature will be in the mid 30’s but given how poor Alashkert are I doubt if they have it in them to turn the tie around.
Qualification for the Group stages of the Europa would be a big boost for Celtic, on and off the park, especially with the game at Ibrox looming.
However Alkmaar are easily the best team we have played this season on the back of their performance in the Erividese last term.
I think most of us would have taken a 2 goal advantage into the away leg but we cannot afford to be so open at the back as we were the other night as it will spell trouble if Alkmaar have their shooting boots on.
No doubt going forward we are potent and are finding the net on a regular basis but it will be interesting to see what tactics Ange employs in the away leg in contrast to the all out attacking mode he’s currently employed and which the players have responded to.
      C’mon the Hoops.
