A decade on from an inconvenient story

Ten years ago today, my readers had this exclusive served up to them.

August 8th 2011, was a Monday, and I knew that this could be the week to provide bona fide evidence that all was not well financially speaking at Ibrox.

It was the start of a week that provided a Kodak moment that the original Rangers were in serious money trouble.

I knew that I needed photographic evidence to counteract the PR firefighting that I knew was emanating from Ibrox.

So I arranged for a professional photographer, a fellow NUJ member, to be there when the Sheriff’s Officers would cross the threshold of the Big House.

It is worth remembering that this was at the time when award-winning stenographers were still telling their readers that this guy was a billionaire.

The featured image was redolent of the mood among the home support at Ibrox regarding Mr Whyte.

For the avoidance of doubt, your humble correspondent was something of a contrarian on this matter.

When the scoop about the Sheriff’s officers appeared here ten years ago, the usual dignified effluent flowed into the back of this site from the Ibrox klanbase.

With all of the usual unsurpassed dignity, the main charge was that that I was making this up and that the Rainjurzz were in rude financial health.

I knew that my sources were strong and that the fantasy of the billionaire owner of Rangers would soon be shattered.

However, I knew that I needed pictures of the event taking place.

It was to prove to be quite a week.

  1. Hi Phil,
Interesting comments from Mr Lundstrum regarding the Covid cases at Ibrox that affected their preparations for the start of the new season.
I don’t recall seeing any reports of these cases in the Scottish media.
I might be way off the mark here but you’d think any serious journalist would be asking a few questions such as,

    What covid cases?
    Who’s tested positive for Covid?
How many positive cases have there been?
Was anyone required to isolate as a result of of it?

Did the club report the positive case(s) and were the Scottish Football authorities and the Scottish Government informed?

Or am I being very naive in my thinking?

  2. It was one of the first of your pieces that I read. It was shortly after my brother put me on to your site. I still remember that iconic photo as well and have fond memories of the anger and angst it caused among the orcs.

The same orcs, who six months later were weeping and wailing and proclaiming to ANYONE who would listen that, “No one told us things were bad.”

They still haven’t learned. They still only hear what they want to hear. They still have a ‘shoot the messenger’ attitude if the news is bad. They still prefer to be told soothing lies rather than inconvenient truths.

  3. Remember it like it was yesterday. A massive massive shock and totally against the flow of journalism and news at the time. Still a staggering event.
