A malicious falsehood that had my big pal chuckling

I was reminded this morning of what my dear friend, the late Paul McConville told me after Rangers died in 2012.

It was his settled view that the demise of the Ibrox club and the creation of Sevco would “cause a decade of litigation”.

As ever, my big pal, Albion Rovers fan and legal blogger, was spot on when it came such forensic matters.

This piece in the Herald by Iain Macwhirter is worth a read.

It is hard to argue with the central thesis contained therein.

The keyword is “malicious”.

However, this observation from Macwhirter did give me the sort of chuckle that was Big Paul’s trademark when faced with incontrovertible pish.

After all, Mr Williams is the chap who invented the hilarious euphemism “engine room subsidiary” to explain why liquidated Rangers FC were still, somehow, alive.

I’m not sure if this intrepid seeker of the truth at the Herald has ever distanced himself from this splash in 2012.

Rangers did indeed die in2012 when the CVA was rejected by the creditors in a 15-minute meeting at Ibrox.

However, those who believed in Old Firm Ltd had to find a way around the truth.

So the Big Lie was confected.

Indeed, that falsehood had supporters in the strangest of places.

It remains the Big Lie in Scottish football journalism and one which will be mercilessly recycled later this season when Sevco wins their first-ever major honour.

Anyone who knowingly adheres to this fiction not only fails as a journalist, but they fail as a person too.

Indeed, it was that type of Orwellian obedience had big Paul chuckling at how grotesquely malleable the Fitba Fourth estate actually was.

  1. With regards to Macwhirter’s article…It’s a great pity he chose to include an SNP element into it as well.
It was obvious that the “political brigade ” would take over the Comments section with their pathetic attempts to debate a subject they have little knowledge of… and it makes me wonder if it was done deliberately…to water down the “Rangers ” criticism. I certainly hope not.
As for Martin Williams’ observation that many journalists have Celtic leanings…well you could have fooled me.

  2. Rather than just rebuff the claims in the SMSM that The Rangers are going for ’55’,

perhaps now would be an opportune time to revisit the deeply flawed records which still show that the original Rangers FC won several titles – despite fielding ineligible, EBT-paid players.

Yes, Bryson of the SFA cobbled together that unique term ‘imperfectly registered’,

yet there has never been a proper assessment of the titles won.

Should they have been struck from the records?
Should they have been asterisked to denote that player registration rules were broken?

To leave those titles unchecked surely besmirches the integrity of the top Scottish league titles won by EVERY other club since the league was formed…?

    • In a similair vein, what’s the betting the hearing into the latest Morelos stamping incident will find in favour of no action required? Because if they say it was a red card incident then he couldn’t/shouldn’t have been on the pitch to score the only goal of the game. And, would a lack-lustre side down to ten men been able to hold out for a goalless draw against a side who were at least looking to return to winning ways?
