The seven year glitch

I have written here before that Mr Dermot Desmond likes to move his CEOs on after a period of time.

It is rather like a football coach rotating the squad to keep things fresh.

The amount of time that Desmond usually allows a CEO to be in post is around seven years.

What usually happens is that the new person is brought in to shadow the incumbent.

Then they take the reins of the company with a very clear understanding of how the venture operates.

The final year is role reversal with the current CEO showing their replacement the ropes over a period of months.

This allows for an orderly transfer of power.

Overall that approach has worked very well for Mr Desmond in his business empire.

Celtic stands out as different.

However, if the Parkhead club had been run on the same lines, then Celtic would have had a new CEO around 2010.

What would have happened?

Well, the new person would have been in place when that infamous din-dins took place Where Craig Whyte (billionaire) told the chaps at the SFAS that Rangers would not see out the season without suffering an insolvency event.

Of course, this was already known to my readers at the time.

The cunning plan was to drop in the new club into the Scottish Premier League (SPL) and playa s the old Rangers.

Plan B was to drop them into the second tier.

However, there was the small matter of a decade of systematic cheating, tax scams and side letters.

Would the new Celtic CEO have been comfortable with that?

Now, he just might have presented a very different narrative to Mr Desmond.

That is one where it was emphasised that the Celtic business shad been damaged throughout that decade.

Moreover, the fact that the Parkhead club had been denied a crack at the riches of the Champions League at the start of that season (2011-2012) was also hurting the bottom line.

Instead, the incumbent believed that the Old Firm brand trumped everything, even a decade of cheating by Murray’s Rangers.

Unfortunately, the past SEVENTEEN YEARS has allowed the incumbent to think that the job is his personal property.

Celtic has been an aberrant operation in the Desmond empire since the summer of Seville in 2003.

It is undoubtedly the truth that the Hoops fans have been short-changed because of that.

  1. Peter has big secrets to protect, big big secrets. they are so big that he can NEVER leave of his own accord. he will need fired…which is NEVER going to happen.

    5-way-agreement, Resolution 12 – the SFA – Oldco Rangers.

He may think the trophies won allows him the above but the truth is, no number of trophies won will stop 99.9% of Celtic fans to chase the truth.

No matter how long it takes them

  2. I rather suspect that Mr Lawwell staying in situ was because of, rather than in spite of, the circumstances of that time and the need to navigate particularly stormy seas.

I also think its off the mark to believe that Mr Lawwell was not following instructions from Mr Desmond regarding the protection of his investment in terms of maintaining value.

Even if all this is accurate though, the only real reason to keep him in place the last few years was continuity to ‘do the ten’. If so, then the Lawwell and Lennon approach had been clearly sliding in performance over that period and should be recognised as such. Performance in football is measured on a curve and the smartest know when to change before the curve becomes obvious to all. Its why moneyball has invaded the game right down to when to sell. Celtic may have fallen off a cliff this season, but they were rolling towards it long before.

  3. Leicester 2 – Chelsea 0, , half time.
Rodgers knows the job, thanks for the time we had, all to brief, 10IAR would of been had.

    No regrets, just thanks,
Treble Treble was your making, it lingered to four but the wheels on the bus have came off

  4. Tick tock, , ,

I’ve no idea on replacement for “heated driveways” or indeed if a better $$ commercial driver of the bus is to be found.

Perhaps Fergus would of dealt with Resolution 12 differently, , , I’d expect so.

But for sure a better balance is required, , from the outside the accountant must have less control of football matters.

I’d imagine Mr D, having seen the untethered impact of Rodgers, is giving matters serious thought.

Howe is inexperienced and not of Rodgers standard.

Seems the Leicester $9 million was a bargain.

Realistically we can’t compete with the “top leagues” for players or managers.

Lennon is Celtic to the core but that in its self is not enough.

Keane, Strachan, or a revisit from O Neil doesn’t fit for me.

I’d have Steve Clark , , , on the proviso that Lawwell stepped back a bit and Clark was allowed to revamp coaching and scouts without interference.

Being 59 I won’t see 10IAR but likewise any repeat of quad treble, if it happens, will be when I’m burnt or planted.

Time for change Mr D, all the best Phil.
