The death of a dream and the return of a cherished brand

In early August 2012, I found myself in the Foyer of the Hyatt Hotel in Philadelphia.

I was standing beside the Celtic CEO, and I was fully aware that I was in the presence of someone coming to terms with a significant loss.

“This has cost us five million pounds,” he said that directly to your humble correspondent.

However, I thought that there was a sense that he was also thinking out loud too.

Perhaps the cue for his utterance was the sight of some Philly Tims dancing outside of the main door with a cardboard coffin.

It was the summer of jelly and ice cream.

However, the man who had to make the numbers add up at Celtic knew that he had lost his business partner.

What I did NOT know that morning in the city of brotherly love was that 12 months earlier there had been an advanced dialogue between the two Glasgow clubs.

The reason for these communications was to present the Old Firm as a package to the folks in England.

The objective was the riches of the EPL.

I have since seen some excerpts from that correspondence, and it is clear that they spoke with one voice on the matter.

In early 2011, Martin Bain and Peter Lawwell were in convivial conclave on the matter.

However, Rangers were also in potential soapy bubble with UEFA.

Thankfully they had some assistance on the 6th floor at Hampden.

Sometimes all that is required is that those tasked with oversight don’t ask too many questions.

This issue would, in time, become Resolution 12 at the Celtic AGM in 2013.

For the uninitiated, the Wee Tax Case should have prevented Rangers from getting a license to play in European competitions in season 2011-2012.

I can only imagine how the other half of the Old Firm partnership would have felt if they had known that the time.

The following season it was clear what would happen if Rangers did not access the wealth of the Champions League.

When Super Salary managed to get Rangers eliminated by Malmo and then from the secondary competition by Maribor, it was a done deal.

Rangers were spending above their means and needed the Euro dosh just to keep the lights on.

As this site stated at the time, without European revenues Rangers would run out of cash before the season ended.

That is exactly what happened.

You know the rest.

Looking back the entry of Old Firm Limited into the EPL looked like a cunning plan.

Unfortunately, one half of the duo had irked Hector.

The Boumsong raid on Ibrox by the City of London Police in 2007 was the hinge factor because after that the chaps at HMRC shared in a treasure trove of incriminating documents.

In time that would create contingent liability that made Rangers unsellable to any responsible owner.

That only left the likes of the imaginary billionaire.

On Saturday the cherished Old Firm brand was finally back and the new iteration of Rangers will now almost certainly win the league.

The heroic chaps in the Stenography Corps have also been grieving for the Old Firm since Rangers died in 2012.

The Ten In A Row a dream has been largely undone by the managed decline at Celtic.

It was very fitting that it was an own goal that finally ended Celtic’s title defence.

Next season, Sevco will defend their SPFL title and have a crack at the riches of the Champions League.

That is game-changing money.

Peter has his business partner back.

  1. As a lifelong a Celtic fanatic,I’m as disappointed and upset as anyone else, was gearing up for the party of a lifetime but, cest la vie,it’s back to square one and we begin again, what’s our choice?, stop following the club we love?, not a chance.I read here of one fan who dismisses the previous 9 consecutive titles as MEANINGLESS,due to failure to reach 10, really?, meaningless?, surely an over reaction, when our club eventually surpass the record of 54 titles, currently held by the now deceased rangers, those 9 “ meaningless” titles will, legitimately count toward that total. We have issues to address,no doubt about that, can only hope the people charged with solving our problems are up to the task,in my own humble opinion, any fans we lose DIRECTLY as a consequence of failing to achieve 10,I would argue we don’t really need them,Celtic has no divine right to win every title,we have lost far more than we’ve won, however,we have prevailed despite the odds stacked against us,sorry for this slight rant, just want to suggest we all take a deep breath and count our blessings.

  2. Old Firm running Scottish football as a rigged cartel before 2012.
Death of Rangers disrupted this but both Celtic & Rangers happy they are back on top so that old order can be reestablished.
Celtic need Rangers and vice versa.

Like every other Celtic fan,I’m disappointed we have let our chance at 10 slip away, would have been an epic achievement but, such is life,I do however, despair when I read of fans who dismiss our previous 9 in a row as nothing important, really?, are these fans trying to tell me they didn’t celebrate any of those titles as they were only significant as a means of getting to 10?, give me a break,Celtic Football Club set TWO world records in 2020,I’ll take that and simply continue to support my club,as for those who’s only goal was 10 and don’t admit to enjoying winning 9( for the second time), I feel sorry for you, genuinely, not in a sarcastic way,if that is the only thing which could bring you joy as a Celtic fan, you’re in for a lot of heartache.

  7. One cannot expect extraordinary people to be driven by fan-in-the-street ambitions.

Take a step back and think like the top 0.0000001% earners of the world.

There comes a time in every billionaire’s life when the baubles become boring: mansions, yacht, supercars, private jets, private islands, trophy wives etc.

Their thoughts turn to legacy. From Carnegie to Gates the burning questions become “How will I be remembered?”, “What mark will I leave on the world?”.

I’ve long considered that DD’s interest in Celtic is as a golden lottery ticket to the legacy of being a big boy EPL club owner.

The chances of the Old Firm reaching the EPL are very, very, very small – but finite all the same – and better than most lotteries.

Run by PL, CFC ticks over nicely at a consistent profit with little effort from DD – so the golden lottery ticket pays the owner to play.

Your thoughts as a fan may as well be expressed in swahilli for all the impact they have on DD.

If times get hard, CFC can easily be off-loaded to an oligarch, sovereign wealth fund etc for some working capital.

Unfortunately for DD, the big prize was suspended for a decade while RFC got its shit together after some rank amateur pissing about (in billionaire terms).

DD and PL did what they could to get the big prize restored (blind eyes, Res12, 5WA etc) without damaging the CFC brand for most punters.

Covid may prove a new opportunity now. If a couple of EPL or bigger EFL clubs fail – as they are allowed to in England – the last thing the EPL needs is more tedious yo-yo clubs (West Brom, Norwich, Fulham, Palace etc).

The Old Firm might be seen as a useful injection of new blood.

So now TIAR is all but lost, RFC have hopes of financial stability and the Old Firm is back, DD can iron his golden lottery ticket and think to the future.

P.S. As for NL. I’d happily buy the guy beer all night followed by a lobster and caviar vindaloo it that’s what he wanted, but as a manager, “a man’s got to know his limitations”.

Cast your minds back a year. We were hearing EXACTLY the same hysterical doom and gloom pronunciations as we’re hearing now.

What happened? We came out fighting and literally blew them away. Under NFL I might add. We played better, more attacking, more productive football than we’d played in years. I’m including our early spell under the traitorous BR in that. He faced no competition domestically and presided over our most humiliating defeats in Europe.

I fully realise that the points scenario is completely different, but sevco WILL at some point have a sticky patch and we MUST take advantage. We are starting to look settled and slick. We have NOT in any game I can think of this season enjoyed the “rub of the green”. Sevco on the other hand, have enjoyed every bit of luck possible. Saturday being a prime example.

There are still a lot of players around the crumbledome who were involved in the collapse last season. Start to sow seeds of doubt in their minds and who knows?

What is beyond doubt is tbat the last thing the players need right now is the fans applying more pressure. If the 10 is to be saved the team NEED EVERYONE behind them.

    KEEP BELIEVING!!

The failure of our CEO to keep Rodgers through to the 10 is completely unacceptable, i have no doubt Rodgers would have seeked pastures new after this season, having achieved all he could at Celtic, it would have been time to re establish himself in the EPL, the distress rockets in particular surrounding transfer policy, ie thousands of wingers we don’t need another one, was clear by Rodgers for all those who wanted to see, a top class professional management team being overseen on transfers by a beancounter, Rodgers was also unhappy with the the lack of progress in updating of the facilities at Lennoxtown, in particular a full size indoors training pitch, a long standing training development requirement, but hey we got our 4 mill on disco lights.

Its the whole narrative surrounding the Lennon appointment that concerns me, our Machieveillian CEO clearly knew the relationship between himself and Rodgers was deteriorating, Rodgers was losing the power battle and Peter let him and us know with a couple of dreadful transfer windows during which Peter banked the cash from the increase in revenue that the Rodgers success had delivered. Rodgers was now looking to get away, clearly he had enough, PL fully aware that his manager could go at any point needed a plan B, the team once again were in the position of sweeping the domestic trophies, Lawwell had to cover his back, allegedly IMO Lennon engineered a dispute at Hibs which saw him leave and be available at a moments notice, Rodgers was easily allowed to leave for Leicester PL banked 9 mill, and introduced Lennon the club legend to take over, no fees payable to Hibs, i’m sure there was much back slapping of our CEO at the PLC for PL’s handling of the take over, the undermining of Rodgers as the rat, the man in the black suit through well placed sources in the media and social media, completed job well done……………………….oh wait

    • The fact that BR was even willing to talk about a job elsewhere was evidence that his loyalty was NEVER more than a sham.

Oh aye. The football we produced under BR after the long undefeated run was unceremoniously ended by hearts was deteriorating by the month. We were winning, but we were mindnumbingly boring in his last few months.

  11. Celtic have failed for five reasons. Griffiths turned up unfit. Lennon did not seem to recognize Soro and Turnbull as the best central pairing in Scotland (which they are), Shane Duffy (just an embarrassment. He is beyond all parody). Our full backs can neither defend nor produce with balls into the box). Edouard cannot finish with the inside of his boot. He is not Derek Parlane (remember him). Goalkeepers keep producing saves because Edouard is under hitting the ball. Lennon is not up to it. He cannot address the deficiencies which are so apparent.

  13. Unfortunately every aspect of the Club’s structure has failed…
On the pitch we flatter to deceive and Neil Lennon learns nothing from games.
He watches different players underperform game after game…but they keep the jersey and stay on the pitch.
Ryan Christie had a nightmare game on Saturday…and should have been off at half-time….at least !!
But in keeping with the norm…he stayed on far too long…contributing nothing…and this is how Neil operates…Totally baffles me…I could go on all day about this…but suffice to say.,. Neil needs to go.
Off the pitch…whoever is responsible for our poor signings …needs sacked…end of.
And I’ll repeat what I’ve said before….Whoever was responsible for the John McGinn debacle…should get jailed….That is the single biggest blunder on our part in recent years…this guy would have smashed it with us…Unforgivable.
At Board level…collusion with the Authorities and Rangers (IL ) to ensure cheating would be rewarded …has come back to bite us severely on the arse….and we deserve all we get as a result.
Were the Res 12 guys given the backing they deserved by the Board…?…Of course not…But were they given the backing they deserved …by large elements of the support…??..Of course not.
Caught up in the fever of records being broken and Sevco toiling …The support ensured that Season Tickets sold out…Merchandise sales rocketed…and Dividends remained healthy.
Oh dear…and now we see what’s happening.
Well… Hell mend the lot of you.
Finally …They say that the buck stops at the top…so step forward Dermot Desmond.
When I look and see how other owners of football clubs behave …( Roman Abramovich for example ?) and then compare it to our guy…I cringe.
We are nothing but a wee charm on his large bracelet…and he really needs to consider his position.
To swan around the world playing golf…and telling people that he owns a “World class Football Club” …might impress some…but it leaves me cold.
Action needs to be taken now…at every level…or I fear the worst.

  14. How many season ticket holders, denied the possibility of attending Celtic park this season will renew for next season given what has been allowed to happen here.? The current incumbents in the parkhead boardroom have never had any ambition beyond seeing a healthy dividend land on their bank accounts annually and I think many supporters have finally had enough. Rangers/Sevco should never have gotten within touching distance of Celtic. In this season of all seasons that they are almost certainly going to stop the ten, the only thing that really mattered to the support, is truly unforgivable and should see those culpable run out of town. Any supporters funding this charade deserve all they get.

This grand master of the black arts of feigning, diving and sleekit kicks and flailing elbows can now notch up his third Celtic player red carded due to his wiles.
I’ve seen many cheats and play actors in my time but none can compare to Alfredo.
He’s in a class of his own and his antics are an important part of his team’s tactics.
An honest observer of Scottish football would surely acknowledge that Morelos is a serial cheat but our “referees “ and our excuse for a media indulge this cheat to the hilt.
Morelos may not be banging the goals in these days but his other talents are equally important.

  16. Always felt this was the intended target of Lawwell. He has zero European ambition, which is where Celtic’s progression as a club should always be measured. Instead, he’s setting the “one point ahead of Rangers” target which, this season, has spectacularly failed and will have severe financial implications going forward. What does Mr Desmond think of all this? We are on the road to nowhere.

    Reply
    • Oh certainly does have European Ambition.
His new Bonus setup (kindly agreed upon by his fellow Board Members) is directly linked to Champions League ENTRY.
How we fair when we get there is actually irrelevant to him as his new Bonus ( I say new as his old one simply became incorporated as wage on its arrival) is only dependant on one campaign in 3 for it to kick in.

Page 25 of the 2018 Annual Report:

ong Term Performance Incentive Plan (“LTPIP”)
Given the importance of the Chief Executive to the consistent and successful performance of the Company, the Board determined that the Chief Executive shall participate in a Long Term Performance Incentive Plan (“LTPIP”), the purpose of which is to link the performance of the Chief Executive to performance targets which have the objective of improving Company performance, the football performance of Celtic FC and generating shareholder value.
The criteria for the LTPIP to become payable as determined by the Board is that Celtic FC qualifies for and participates in the group stages of the UCL in the applicable financial year. In order to receive payment the participant must be employed by the Company at 31 December 2018. Awards under this arrangement accrue in each applicable financial period and are paid at the first appropriate date following
      31 December 2018.
Executive Long Term Incentive Plan (“ELTIP”)
An ELTIP was adopted and approved by the Board and was introduced with effect from 1 July 2016 with the objective of retaining and rewarding, through financial incentives, key executives within the Group over the medium to long term.
Under the terms of the ELTIP, in return for these individuals remaining with the Group for a minimum of 4 years up to 30 June 2020, and during that period the Group achieving performance criteria determined by the Board (“vesting criteria”), annual awards are made. These awards accrue in each applicable financial period and are paid at the end of the 4 year period. The vesting criteria determined by the Board are: (i) that the participant is employed by the Group on 30 June in the applicable financial year and at the end of the 4 year period; and, separately, (ii) that Celtic FC qualifies for and participates in the group stages of the UCL in the applicable financial year. Both conditions are exclusive of one another and attract fixed values of award on crystallisation.
The ELTIP applies to the financial years from 2016/17 to 2019/20. The vesting criteria have been selected because the Board believes that they are consistent with the medium to longer term strategic objectives of the Group, taking account of the rolling 5 year business plan and the nature of the Group’s business.

  17. Frankly, if EPL admittance is the end game then it’s fair to assume Desmond is just as culpable as Lawell, IF the goal is getting into the EPL that will see huge financial return on his investment.

Possibly why he isn’t too worried about how much Lawell alienates the fans too, after all ironically a country which revels in poppy-fest and how the *glories* of imperial plunder seems to think things like croke park massacre and the Kilmichael ambush must be left in the past for the sake of healing and may bails at the idea of many real Celtic supporters who believe that history is forgotten we’re doomed to repeat it.

I’m fairly certain Desmond believes that what he loses in people of Irish heritage wishing to remember the history their grandfathers or great grandfather were directly involved in will be made up with an influx on Man United prawn sandwich brigade types should admittance to the EPL be granted.

The current incumbents at Ayebrokes have no line of credit with a High Street Bank but instead are keeping afloat by means of soft loans from internal Lenders.
They had to wait 3 years for a European License and had to start from scratch at the bottom of the Scottish Professional game.
The 5 Way Knuckleshuffle only serves one purpose.
It keeps 50,000 paying customers/gullibillies within the game.
All that matters is that these gullible fools believe the continuity myth and the rest can carry on as normal.
There will be no complaints from any other Club as the Orc descends on their half empty grounds filling it up twice maybe three times a Season.
Lawwell and Co are certainly not opposed to cashing in on the Derby day windfalls either.
We know what happened, they know deep down what happened but so long as they can be convinced it never happened (Liquidation) then it continues.
They will celebrate 150 years of existence and a 55 th Title should it transpire and we will just have to accept it.

However without them peters annual bonus would have been so much less, possibly the first 100 meters of his driveway would go unheated, I understand how tough that can be, as I often leave the heating off in unused rooms in our house to save a coin or two. His legacy will be the man who lost the ten. Well done Peter! Was it worth chasing the blue pound? I think he will be away very soon to pastures new, maybe even a bigger heated driveway.

It was Lennon who has mismanaged the entire squad, its usage, selection, training and tactics. It is Lennon that should carry the can for this season. He should be sacked ASAP. As for Lawell, he needs replaced also, as he should have been years ago. But this season, the season of the 10, it has been at the fault of Lennon. And that will be his legacy.

    • No Chance, the three of them are equally to blame. The modern day three amigos. They cost us the 10.
Direct action to remove the lot of them must begin now. A club with 5 years unhindered access to Champions league riches. A so called billionaire owner and the Smartest CEO ever, has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, by a penniless tribute act. We ran the Whyte’s & Kelly’s out of town for less. SHAME on them all. WE backed that club from the brink of despair and this is how the Celtic Board reward us.

      Reply
  22. Great post Phil, Celtic have no one to blame but themselves. The club should be light years ahead of the 8yr old tribute act and because they’ve always worked on a short term business plan at Parkhead we allowed a club who are financially doped again to get ahead of us. The 10’s definitely gone unless we get a miracle and they collapse again which I don’t see happening this time. In my opinion that result on Saturday was decided before the game, Morelos should’ve been sent off for his challenge on Frimpong but once again the coward was allowed to stay on the park. I know Bitton made a rash challenge but was it any worse than what Morelos did? I’d say no, his was worse, but it gave Madden a chance to send a Celtic player off and therefore change the dynamic of the game from us playing them off the park to them getting a lucky goal and nothing else on target in the game. I’d sack Lennon and Lawell as the buck stops with them and Desmond should sell the club to someone with a long term business plan for the club. We’ll never have had a better chance to make the history of 10 titles in a row than we had. For me not getting the 10 renders the other 9 a waste of time. I’m not some spoiled supporter either I’ve watched Celtic since 1965 so I’ve seen the good and the bad and not doing the Holy Grail of 10 feels like a death in the family to me. Shame on the present incumbents who hold the top jobs at Paradise as they’ve let every single supporter down despite the millions we plough into the coffers every year. This will cause repercussions for a long time to come and we’ll unlikely never see the chance to get 10 in a row again in our lifetimes and for me that’s unforgivable.

    • The own goal was a fluke but as Phil reminds us with so many examples that it was so symbolic by way of quest for the 10 becoming an endless calamity by the board’s modus operandi (akin to how other so called custodians behaved before FMC intervened) to yield this calamitous ending.

  23. I never understood the logic behind that statement that the Loss or Rangers would hit Celtic financially. After all we had a free run at the champions league for a decade…if only we had someone in charge who was prepared to take a punt.

Peter may be many things, A gambling man he is not. He prefers to place the safe bets. He saw Ranger demise as safe money down the drain. The Champion league was something he was never going to gamble Celtics money on, and the upshot is, He managed to blow it anyway.

Celtic have gone from total domination, completely in charge of it’s own destiny and heading over the horizon away from all challengers, to reverse gear in a matter of a couple of years… with Sevco now in poll position to turn the tables.

As you say, Phil, Would Rangers have felt the same way about us if the table were turned back in 2012?. Would they have wanted to partner up to help an old “friend” out?. We are about to find out that that answer would have been be No, No they would not.

They would have buried us, then danced on our graves

Once they get in front (and they will) they will do everything in their power to put us down and keep us there.

Sometimes in life you need to take a punt, and god knows how, but Sevco has been taking a punt since it’s conception. They’ve been all in since 2012. I don’t believe for one minute Dermot Desmond got to where he has today without taking a punt (no Pun…t Intended) or two.

But actually Celtic have lost £150 million through failure to reach the Champions League group stage five times in the last seven seasons. And now we’re going to lose 10 in a row as well due to penny-pinching. The club won’t be getting any more money from me until Lawwell and Lennon are gone

I stil believe that Lawell wanted sevco to win the league this season, to allow them the shot at the CL, and to keep the old firm cash cow alive, that’s why Lennon was kept in the job, Lawell new he would fail miserably and had the perfect patsy. It’s quite simply not working, to be chasing history, and make a complete mess of it, is embarrassing. We are about half way through the season, and it may get worse, how by not winning anything,.

The spine of the team is a disaster, a goalkeeper who has failed in all departments so far, a center half who looks like he has never played football higher than junior level, and that’s a disrespectful thing to say about junior football, send this guy back to Brighton ASAP, if we don’t have any better players than this on our books we are in trouble, a central midfield player who is now passed his best, great player his time is up, two center forwards who have brought nothing to the team bar backing up guys returning from covid and one with health issues,

If the man at the top can’t see the issues he should join them all on the bus out of town.

Time for change at Celtic Park
