Proud Preston and shameless Sevco

Preston North End have an illustrious history.

They are a founder member of the English Football League.

When association football was still young, “Proud Preston” set standards for others to follow in the beautiful game.

In 1888–89, Preston became the first league champions and the first winners of “The Double”.

They became the only team to date to go throughout an entire season unbeaten in both the league and FA Cup.

The men from Preston won the 1889 FA Cup without conceding a goal.

They last won that coveted trophy in 1938 and have not won a major honour since then.

However, they will always be “Proud Preston” as their history is intact.

Over recent days the Lancashire club has been dealing with a club that has neither history nor pride.

Shameless FC of Ibrox has been trying to sign Daniel Johnson from Preston.

I spoke about this proposed signing yesterday with a well-placed source at Ibrox.

When I asked if the deal would go through, his response was:

“Sign him with what?”

I rather thing that the term “proper bid” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Mr Gerrard has already gone public with just need for further additions to his injury-depleted squad:

“I can’t be any more clear with Ross and the board in terms of what we need. They know that, I don’t have to go public.

“But yes, we certainly do. We need one in the engine room at least to help us over the course, we’re expected to qualify for Europe again and play every Thursday and every Sunday, you can’t do that unless you have the right numbers and we’re one short in midfield. “

If the player does arrive, it will be another triumph for the chaps in the Blue Room.

They appear to be able to conjure money out of financial fumes.

The rational members of the Sevco High Command know that all of this is unsustainable.

However, in the Ten In A Row Year, all such worries have been put to one side.

Of course, this behaviour is nothing new at Ibrox.

The original Rangers chased the dream of equalling the European triumph of their city rivals.

There can be little doubt that this iconic image of Celtic’s immortal victory in 1967 has haunted generations of the Ibrox klanbase.

Moreover, Sir David Murray knew it, and he attempted to bankroll Rangers to achieve those heights.

However, in order to get there, he threw financial and fiscal caution to the winds, and in the end, it killed them.

For the avoidance of doubt, the same fever now grips the chaps in the Blue Room about Celtic doing La Décima.

If the money is scrapped together for that transfer fee, then expect to see some visible signs of austerity elsewhere in the Sevco setup.

This might be one such straw in the wind:

Very tough on Ms Hedworth as I’m sure she did an excellent job.

I’m sure that the intrepid chaps in the Stenography Corps will be trying to ascertain if there have been other off-field redundancies at Ibrox in the past few weeks.

  1. What are you on about, sevco have plenty of money. Read the papers they are living the life of luxury on a super yacht lol
Even although its under £200 a night for a double room, don’t concern yourself with that, the yacht is worth £120m

  2. From the Evening Times today (with thanks to Blackadder)
“It has been a wild afternoon full of strange omens. I dreamt that a large eagle circled the room three times and then got into bed with me and took all the blankets. And then I saw that it wasn’t an eagle at all but a large black snake. And also Duncan’s horses did turn up and eat each other. As usual and from this I conclude Edouard wants away from Celtic.”

  3. Slippy complaining about not having enough players to see the campaign through beggars belief after the amount of bodies he’s signed in every transfer window since his arrival at the hunnery. HH

  5. Friend of mine who supports Leeds tells me they decided against Kent because sevco wanted double what they valued him at!!!

Its like watching a buy to let landlord trying to offload his property portfolio before the housing market implodes

  6. Hmm.

If RIFC is having trouble attracting more ‘investors’ to pump money into Ibrox to keep the lights on,

then the only wiggle room, (for audit sign-off purposes), would appear to be announcing / implementing swingeing cuts to the cost base – including headcount.

Rather than start with the lower earners RIFC could / should start with the high earners, (players excluded).

The expensive, Commercial & Marketing Director, James Bisgrove – who partnered RIFC with Castore – must be in prime position ‘to be resigned’, a la Warbuton. 🙂
