The hinge factor in season 2020-2021?

I  wrote here some time ago that the only thing that could stop Celtic prevailing in the 10 IAR season was the Parkhead club itself.

The events of the last couple of days would seem to validate that theory.

Like any disaster scenario, certain things have to come into alignment before the calamity unfolds.

The hinge factor in this appears to have been the decision by the management team to give the players two days off after the first match of the season.

Was there a sports science reason for this call?

After the match against Kilmarnock Neil Lennon stated that his players lacked match sharpness.

Therefore, the decision to give them a 48-hour pass seems strange.

Today his anger towards his player was palpable.

However, the manager created the scenario for this shambles to happen.

It might not just be the AWOL defender who has questions to answer on this fiasco.

What Boli Bolingoli did was inescusable.

However, the two day holiday in AUGUST does appear to be inexplicable.

Since the Covid19 crisis unfolded, Celtic have been a centre of excellence for how an elite sports organisation deals with the challenges of the pandemic.

However, this is an embarrassing stain on an otherwise impeccably run club.

The Celtic statement was clear and unequivocal, and it is difficult to see a way back for the defender now.

I’m told that both Celtic Park and Lennoxtown were deep cleaned yesterday and that everyone in the club, including no football staff, has been tested since this story broke.

Most contracts of employment have a gross misconduct clause.

If this unauthorised trip to Spain does not come under that, then the Belgian’s contract was badly drafted.

The response of the Scottish Government has been measured and evidence-based.

Another infraction by any player in any club will not be tolerated.

On the football front, Celtic will not now be in league action again until Saturday 22nd August.

By then they could well be trailing in the league.

One possible scenario is that Celtic will still be playing catch up when there is a second serious spike in Covid19 cases in the winter.

Should that happen early next year, then Scotland might have to go into lockdown again.

Of course, it doesn’t require an upsurge in Coronavirus cases for football to be stopped.

All it would take is one player from any SPFL club doing what Boli Bolingoli did.

Just one.

Of course, there is precedence for calling league early based on matches played and points per game.

  1. To Charlie Gunn,in what way was he” stitched up”?, to bring his skin color into it is a cheap and unacceptable shot imo,he,and he alone, made his choice.

  2. The biggest culprit here is Doncaster and the SPFL/SFA boards. The corrupt cabal knew the rules laid down to get the game started, and should have written rules stating the punishment for players and clubs should there be any indiscretion. The total lack of leadership from the minute they abandoned last season to how they have handled the Covid crisis shows they are not fit for purpose.
All games should have been forfeit and points awarded to the opposition who have followed the rules.
To simply postpone these games means there is NO punishment. Don’t forget this could have had a huge impact on getting games played and has set back getting fans in by a long way. The fact those running the league have not thought this through and laid out what would happen should players or clubs default, how can they sit there coining in huge wages to simple claim they are following instruction from clubs? Time to disband this useless mob and start again with clear rules and regs. Board members voted in every four years and they must show some leadership in times of crisis.

  3. On my earlier point regarding who’s to blame in regard to bolingolis actions,it’s not enough to exonerate the ADULT who chose to go to Spain, despite his employers instructions, some people want to lay the blame at my clubs door,if those of that mindset would be so kind as to explain where the club failed in their duty I would appreciate it. In my opinion,he,and he alone is to blame and he should be banished.

    1)…Bolingoli should be sacked.
    2) ..Celtic FC is guilty of nothing here…NOTHING.
    3) The Government’s decision is unsound…and our Club should challenge it…Why do we remain silent on these matters…?
    4) Phil’s final paragraph is simplistically chilling.

I must confess to being surprised at anyone defending Bolingolis actions,do the people taking his side really believe he didn’t know he was breaking the rules?,I read arguments where it’s pointed out” he’s a young man and wasn’t thinking”,can’t say I buy that whatsoever,he’s 25 years of age,if he doesn’t know by now,how to behave during this very trying time,he never will, taking that a small step farther,if he really hasn’t grasped how serious Covid19 is yet,he may well decide to hop over to Spain again in the future.I really can’t see anyway he can be kept at the club, whether he’s sacked under employment law or paid off in full, either way,he shouldn’t be allowed near Celtic football club again.

    • You want him out because he is perceived as a poor player and a wage burden. If it was Kieran Tierney you’d be jumping to his defence.

It’s a scorpion move here. Left claw, Humza Yousef Justice Minister, tweets him by name (utterly indefensible) Creating public opinion and pitchfork mob. Right Claw, Police charge him and fine him. The big tail sting will be CELTIC or SPFL/SFA sacking him out the game.

A young foreign black guy in Scotland, stitched up proper. Humza a Celtic supporter too, wouldn’t be treating Keiran Tierney the same.

      • Ah! He’s black! So that makes it all right does it? The Griffallo is white so let’s make HIM rhe fall guy. Black? White? The only colour question here is simple. What the fuck is the colour of the sky on your planet??

This has NOTHING whatsoever to do with race, colour or creed. It’s about a grown man taking responsibility for his actions and the effects his actions could yet have on the lives of countless others. Of every colour, race and creed. For ANYONE to even think about playing the racist card on this is absolutely appalling.

Bolingoli, THE MAN, should be fired right out of the door. Along with Griffiths, THE MAN!!

His ethnicity has absolutely nothing to do with the fact he’s a halfwit who deserves to be sacked.
The fact he’s also a poor Footballer nowhere near the standard required of a Celtic player has nothing to do with the fact he took it upon himself to break the rules and put the entire Season in Jeopardy for both Celtic and Scottish Football.

  6. It is just incredible that he gave the players two days off at the start of a season.
Last night I heard it said that the wolves manager gave his players four days off after finishing the season and then had them in every day for the europa games. One is a total professional the other is not. The players “lacked match sharpness”, now go home and rest. FFS!!! We are playing with fire with this manager in my opinion.

An entire industry threatened with lockdown due to a few individuals being selfish and breaking rules.

This demonstrates how knee jerk, ill thought through and pathetic SNP is.

I know of dozens, there’s probably hundreds or thousands of offshore and onshore workers in the oil and gas industry who went to Spain and elsewhere with pals or family, have returned and went offshore or back to office. No self isolation.

Also businessmen in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Is she going to lockdown the Oil industry?

Is she going to shutdown the construction industry and others due to these businessmen?

Why is the lunatic threatening to shutdown the football industry solely????

Good Squirrel to distract from education?

    • Bollingoli did not knowingly break rules. He didn’t know. Folks told him he could go to Spain on holiday, it was ok. The rules changed regarding Spain. I don’t even know now? Is it 14 days or ten days isolation after Spain?

He’s a very young lad, from a foreign country and doesn’t speak or read English well.

He is a well meaning victim.

Humza Youssef‘s tweet above is a disgrace. The Police charging him is a disgrace. He has been targeted and picked out. Police taking Youssef’s hint?

Was everyone on his flight audited for self isolating or did they go back to work? And the hundreds of other flights? They’re all going back to work and earning. He is being singled out!

It smacks of constructive dismissal too.

Bollingoli needs a lawyer, this criminal offence needs deleted. It is unsound.

  9. I canny believe some of you guys are sticking up for Lennon. After the Kilmarnock game he claimed Julianne was a ‘slow starter’ but still saw fit to give him to give him 2 days off in the run up to Sunday…that disnae even make sense he should be giving ‘slow starters’ 2 extra sessions. Also why did guys like Bolingoli get 2 days off when THEY PLAYED NO PART in the game against Hamilton except to warm the subs bench…were they knackered watching Edouard running aboot? I think a wee bit of arrogance was at play here with the manager “hey guys take a couple of days off we’re only playing Kilmarnock next week”. Utterly amateurish.

And here’s food for thought on how tough this season was already going to be. Last season, if we had reached the split, the randall and hopkirks would have been due to play the other 5 top 6 teams away…this season if the top 6 pans out the same way they will have them at home whereas we’ll have to play away to those teams.

Having said that, I think Celtic should be looking at an alternative to Lennon should they go, say, 15 points behind because of the postponements and slip ups. purely for the boost a new manager can bring. What about sounding out Sarri, albeit he has just been sacked, on a two year megadeal contract? It would cost circa £10,000,000 plus but small potatoes to save the season.

Eg Forget wee Nicola’s rules and assuming the players will comply …did they publish a set of special rules for Celtic players eg You guys are Celtic and this is very specifically what you can and can’t do in this year of all years
I suspect they did not do that
Every one of us makes mistakes and the Covid rules are very confusing especially for not very clever football players . I would forgive Griffiths and bolongoli and get them to apologise to their teammates and the fans , accept we have a mountain to climb with TRFC likely to have 11 points of a start and the Masonic cohort at Hampden waiting to pounce At our every minor discretion And ignore the TRFC crimes as we have seen already even this pre -season

What part of that is so hard for you to understand that you arbitrarily decide it’s the club’s fault? Are they to provide chaperones for all playing staff now? While some of the players may well have eschewed academia in favour of a sporting career, they are, nevertheless adults and capable of understanding both what is going on nationally and internationally with regard to the Covid virus. This was a calculated and wilful act by a lone individual for his own, unknown ends. The fault is Bolingoli’s and his alone!

You’re the dreamer that has come up with this fantasy foolproof plan that shouldn’t be required of adults following a VERY simple instruction (that every other single player managed to follow apart from Bolingoli). Well that stable door doesn’t require bolting – the horse has already left the stable, if not the country! You are desperately trying to twist circumstances to suit your narrative that the club is at fault and I’m seriously wondering to what end? “Having processes in place to ensure an act like this can’t happen” – who are you, the player’s agent or something? You are the one who’s deflecting; defending the indefensible. I’d credit the rest of the players with the common sense they deserve (apart from Griff). Neither are they “impressionable young boys” – Bolingoli is a 25 year old man who has played professional football at home in Belgium, Austria and now Scotland. The life of a professional footballer requires a lot of discipline and he will have seen that discipline in his various clubs. It was a calculated and wilful disregard for club instructions, nothing more and nothing less. Your attempts at excusing Bolingoli’s conduct can effectively be stripped down to, “Bolingoli is a man child and the club should have held his hand to ensure he did nothing stupid”. Yeah, because real life is like that…

  15. Phil,

I cant agree their is a problem giving the players 2 days off. They normally have a day off anyway after a game. Plenty of time to get the tactics right for Kilmarnock – Lennon simply got it wrong at Kilmarnock.

    Lets talk however about the 1st ministers statement;

Ms Sturgeon said that “as a minimum, you should not be expecting to see Aberdeen or Celtic play in the coming week.”

She added: “Consider today the yellow card. The next time it will be the red card because you will leave us with absolutely no choice.”

This was simply a punishment and a statement by rh government to pressure the SFA who immeidately folded. – no players at Celtic have actually tested positive in the two recent tests they have had since Boli returned from Spain – If it wasnt simply a punishment why havent Kilmarnocks next games been cancelled. There was no need to cancel any fixtures.

I thought it was against FIFA/UEFA rules for governments to interfere in football association matters? The SFA have had both arms twisted and both feet held over the fire with this yellow/red card nonsense from NS. Again I say why havent Kilmarnocks fixtures been postphoned.

    Thanks,

    Allan

The Polish striker is mediocre at best. He aint got it. Elyonoussi gives the ball away too often. We needed a 10 million striker, and a 10 million no.10. Instead of dripping mediocrity which soon accumulates to reach these sorts of figures anyway. Pray for a good season out of Rogic.

  18. We must remain calm. The BBC’s loaded “ineligible player” question had to be qualified by Neil Lennon (in the presser), such is the desire to see anything with us to be discredited. Derek McInnes in this press conference was not subject to anywhere near the amount of questions NFL was. While I want to see Celtic win everything, game management of a squad this season is paramount.

The First Elven should play: League and Champions League, and the Balance of the SC from 19/20
The second eleven regardless of how inexperienced should be in the Betfred, and Scottish Cup. Complete rotation 1-11.

We were light on Left back and Centre Half. We require another couple of creative options and definitely 2 centre forwards, one of whom should be a battering ram John Hartson type for this days we are going have to grind it out like Kille on Sunday. It was like watching the month of December last season. – This time there is no winter break and we must keep going.

The support, the club and the players, must be as one. We are all Neil Francis Lennon. He is the best candidate to handle any turbulence this season.

We can only defeat ourselves. They have everything on, ended the season early as top of the league, someone should ask them about the fact they played a match without an incomplete set of results. Celtic should free up Boli’s wages, give them to Hickey at Hearts and we move on united.

    Reply
    • Aye. Well said. Something came back to me there when you mentioned Hartson. I was listening to 5live on the way home from work a lot of years ago. Barcelona had just gone out of the CL after 90 minutes of trying to thread their way through a packed defence. A guy, who said he was a locksmith to trade, phoned in and said they needed an old fashioned battering ram center forward to take off the bench in such situations.

His analogy was simple. He occasionally got called out to try to pick a lock when someone had locked themself out. Sometimes, he said, you get to a point where you just know that picking the lock isn’t going to work. The only answer is to batter down the door.

This season will be a fight, make no mistake. He is being hamstrung by a biscuit tin mentality (remember those years?), and whilst it would be foolish to throw millions on players who in reality will play on a cold Tuesday in Paisley, we do need quality. Nicola doing a great job imo but she should be letting the SFA deal with these rule breaks.

Frankly the SFA/SPFL have NO rules on covid. They don’t enforce proof of testing (as we saw with sevco) or frequency of testing.. They have no rules on calling games off if x number of players are in lockdown or positive. Players socialise away from football so anyone can pick it up and go to training next day, does the club shut down for 14 days? Does the team they played earlier do the same?

The Glasgow based players are most at risk of virus pick up as it is the most densely populate region, going by lockdown rules Celtic and Sevco could be in one lockdown after another impossible to catch up. Could easily happen.

SFA/SPFL should have established this season as an asterisk season, keeping football going but discounting the season until we are out of pandemic, restart the season’t competitions hopefully later next year when we are over the virus impact.

Until there is tried and tested vaccine the game’s a bogey.

He could’ve given them 5 days off and Lennon would still have had absolutely ZERO input to this “scenario.”

Bolingoli is a grown-up (supposedly) and the fault in this lies nowhere other than squarely on his shoulders.

After Griffiths had his party there wouldn’t be a player in the squad left in any doubt as to where he should be going and what he should be doing after training. To even hint at a suggestion this could be a blame apportioning event is utterly farcical.

If it were represented in a pie-chart fashion then it would contain one large Bolingoli sized portion.

  23. I don’t think it is unreasonable for the players to have a couple of days off after training on a Saturday and playing on a Sunday and then four days prep for the next game. Can’t blame Lennon for that particularly as players would know the protocol for the time off. The player deliberately broke that protocol for his own personal gain ,whatever that was. The point you make for an early league call is a concern. Although we joke about the pre-season cup , Rangers have shown a desire for the challenge ahead and a recognition of its importance. Whether that is the PR battle or signing players , and I have yet to see a similar desire from Celtic. Time to wake up and rise to the occasion.

At this moment in time , I am absolutely livid with Lennon , He seems to try and still be one of the bhoys , when he is the blooming manager , we are in a serious danger of the scottish government telling us to pack up our toys and stop the season , It looks as if we may now have to play in a neutral ground for the upcoming champions league ties , as for bolingoli I expect him to be sacked for breach of contract , If Lennon doesnt do a managers job and make an example of the sheer idiocy in the ranks , then he should resign I normaly toe the line and believe the management and trust in them, but jings Its 10IAR Season ! We can finaly stick the metaphorical finger up to the establishment and get our place back in the history books again. begining to lose trust in lennie

    • What the actual feck. This is in no way Neil Lennons fault. There is absolutely nothing you can blame on Lennon here, you must be one of them people who want Lennon to do wrong so you can instantly jump in and validate your ill feeling towards him.
This is Bolingoli fault and absolutely no one else’s.
The players had 2 days off after thier first high intensity match in 5months, in their only free midweek for many months to come. How in any way can you blame this on Lennon?

    • I lost trust in him when we went out to Copenhagen. The disaster against Cluj was forgivable, the pish performance when we lost to the sevconites was just forgivable and no more but when we lose a 3rd huge game at home i think everyone should have been asking if the Lennon was the right man for the job….

  29. I’m not sure if you’re being deliberately obtuse.

75% of the league games have to be played for the league to be “called”.

Neil giving the players one extra day off ahead of a very busy schedule is not exactly a free pass.

    • Yes it is, it’s entirety a free pass and only an idiot would have done so. Absolutely no need for two days off, none, they’ve been off for months basically. Just look at the pish performance against Killie in how it’s affected the whole team. Even light training would have sufficed.

These guys get paid an awful lot of money, I’m a ST holder and I’m raging with the club, two games whereby the huns could get us in deep water playing catch up.

Idiot move by Lennon in my opinion.

      • Hope your boss made you work at least 6 days a week after lockdown. Just because they are football players doesn’t mean they don’t have employment rights.
What would.you suggest, get the full squad and all the staff taking over a hotel and staying there until there’s a vaccine. Driven to training and games , then straight back to the hotel. Or is that too cushy.
Get off your moral high horse. The players were given 2 days off and told not to travel. Boli thought he would do as he wanted and then never told anyone. He will be dealt with by the club. He’s been fined of the police.
That’s not the story you want to paint though.

    • Well after the showing on the plastic pitch I would disagree ! there has been no football since March !! plenty time for chilling I know its the start of the season , but there is an expected second wave looming on the horizon , we should not have started the league at least until october or mid september then . Neil is not a great man manager this is his problem , I have been in a situation where I was managing my mates at work , they dont like it when you swap hats all the time It makes us look like amateurs

    • Sorry, but where do you get 75% of league games must be played before awarding the title. I don’t recall seeing that in SPFL rules.
