Opposing fascists both foreign and domestic

Fascism and football have a long history.

The dictator of the 1930s quickly realised that it was a route to popularity with the masses.

Franco, Hitler and Mussolini all used the beautiful game for very ugly reasons.

The victor in the Spanish civil war feared the potential of Barcelona FC to be a focus for Catalan separatist sentiment.

The controversy of the signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano still rankles today in Catalonia.

After Anschluss, the Austrian national team was closed down.

The tragic end of Matthias Sindelar was a harbinger of the darkness that would engulf Hitler’s Reich.

Tonight in Rome Celtic will play a side who has an element in their support who are still in love with Il Duce.

After the last match in Parkhead, the Fascists among the Lazio support wanted revenge on their home turf.

Sadly this does not just mean beating Celtic on the field of play.

That would be too normal for them.

There have already been credible reports of some Hoops fans being attacked.

Of course, we have our own fascists in Planet Fitba.

Folk who lovingly remember in song a street gang led by an admirer of Oswald Mosely and a member of the Ku lux Klan.

There has been quite a lot of editorialising recently from the Stenography Corps that the home crowd at Parkhead should have been more mindful of the fragile feelings of the Mussolini fan club.

I think you could reasonably call that approach “appeasement”.

The irony of the UEFA charges against Celtic for those banners in the Lazio game at Parkhead is that they conveyed the same essential messages as the “equal game” campaign.

If you oppose racism then you must, ipso facto, oppose fascism in any of its iterations.

Meanwhile, in Fair Caledonia, the Poppy Police amongst the Ibrox klan are exercised that a tainted emblem is not worn to “honour those who fought fascism” while simultaneously hoping that fascists will find Fenian victims in the streets of the Eternal City tonight.

To all of the Hoops folk in Rome please stick together and stay safe.

  1. Go join ANTIFA if you want to oppose Fascism and stop using Celtic Fc as a political Football and or soapbox for your own personal views.
A Football Club was formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and the unemployed.
Not your own personal ideology or beliefs.
3 Celtic fans were chibbed yesterday and that banner was whether you like or not designed to provoke the numpty element of the Lazio Support.
Now you either accept that or you don’t but the fact remains Celtic Fc is NOT aNd never has been a political entity.

    • I’ve explained below how this is, sadly, ‘normal’ for any football fans visiting Rome but you’re as impervious to reason as a Climate Change denier, creationists etc. You fit the ‘Gish Gallop’ profile to a T.

I believe you don’t go to Celtic games. There’s a stadium in Glasgow that would be extremely welcoming for your views of Celtic fans.

  2. Well done bhoys, great performance.
NL’s team is showing much more of an offensive approach than Brendan’s often boring continual passing along the back four.
We are getting the ball forward much quicker in a controlled fashion playing some lovely stuff.
    Bring it on.

  3. Sevco fans dragging our support into Lazio ultras chaos what a cheek after the stabbings they dished out to supporters of their opponents in Europe last season at ibrox . They are even calling Celtic fans thick. Imagine the BENNY’S calling anybody THICK. They have a CHISLER for a chairman that is also described by a South African judge as a GLIB & SHAMELESS LIAR . A CHISLING chairman who is running debts up in their club on a yearly basis every year since he has been there . The CHISLING chairman always out with the begging bowl to who ever will give him cash such as the THICKEST of them all club 1872 . Big MIKE CASHLEY breathing heavily down on them for MEGA MILLIONS in January. The Close Brothers tapped out the maximum. Infact the CHISLER has done more tapping over there than a blind man’s stick .Heading for 5 star luxury hotels in the winter break with not a pot to piss in trying to keep up with or match Celtic . And now today the THICKEST of the BENNY’S club 1872 approve another half a million quid to purchase more shares in a club that is circling the drain . And their fans have the cheek to say Celtic fans are thick . Oh dear .

  4. What’s happened in Rome today will have played right into The Booze Jockeys hands AKA Keith Jackass Jackson . This booze bag has been frothing at the mouth for the last 2 weeks urging this on . Should The Booze Jockey slate us in his toilet paper excuse of a newspaper either tomorrow or whatever day he decides to sober up then a LIFETIME ban should be given to him . The guys a total CLOWN but he is so drunk he does not even know it himself .

  5. I am all for opposing Fascism,Racism,Bigotry or any of the other disgusting things that blight Football AND Society in 2019.
However this should be done at the right place at the right times and with consideration to whatever consequences may come of it.
The Banner in question was not the best idea the GB have ever had or in fact the best time to display it.
The reprisals whether you agree or not have already started happening and anyone who dares suggest that goading the mentally challenged Italian Fascists in the manner that they have is in this instance was justified is at best naive or at worst condoning the action and dismissive of the POSSIBLE outcome.
Two people were stabbed last night for no other reason than being Celtic Supporters enjoying a trip to Rome to watch their team.
This was was not helped by the Banner being displayed at Celtic Park.
At some point the Club are going to have to deal with this with severity it requires.
No amount of whataboutery will change the fact innocent people were put at higher risk because of the actions of a few misguided numpties.
Let us hope and pray that this is the end of the reprisals and that they all return home safe and well.

    • These are not reprisals, they are what happens to every team (Spurs, Liverpool, Man U, Dutch, German etc) that goes there.

No Celtic fan will defend or deflect from who is responsible for these attacks and anyone who does isn’t a Celtic fan.

    • You fight facism in all it’s forms. You don’t sit quietly in case they might get upset. Our grandfathers didn’t die in war so we could sit back and not annoy future facists.

    • I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. They are capable of bringing so much to the club, ie the stunning display they put on to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the European Cup win, but the price has become too high.

  6. Interesting picture of the-I assume-Union Bears above…personally cannot see one iota of difference between these Fascists and the Trot Red Fascists of the Green Brigands-sorry Brigade. Easy mistake to make. These w*****s think that they are some sort of Vanguard among the Celtic support. They think that only THEY matter and f**k the rest of us. Interesting word Vanguard…a word employed in Loyalist circles both past and present. Entirely suitable for the Green Brigade Huns, who must share a part of the blame for our people being stabbed and hospitalised in Rome last night. The final straw surely…Lawwell should f**k the whole lot of them out of CP with immediate effect…he has the power to do so.

If these little Hun bastards had any conscience they would DISBAND themselves right now. They should not be allowed to reform under another name. They should spend game days at Ibrox where they f*****g well belong. A great big Hail Hail to all real Celts.

    • The Green Brigade are a very important and much loved part of the Celtic support, as anyone who attends games can attest.

You? Would be right at home in the Stenography Corps or even der Hun themselves. Perhaps that’s your home and would certainly get a warm welcome for your views, as opposed to Fascist cold house you’d get at CP.

      • Entirely uncalled for and the same attitude was and is prevalent among the SM, Tory party (Gove, Johnston, May, Rees-Mogg) the terraces of Ibrokes, Tynecastle and lots of other places.

Blame the victims and don’t challenge the perpetrators.

How can we call for a free country and free speech then beat down people for expressing it???

There was/is nothing fascism on Paradise terraces just expression that different from yours which is healthy.

Get well soon those unfortunately stabbed, this is NOT the GB fault and I’m not condoning their actions it’s not how I would have done it.

        • Bandito, these selfish, entitled snowflake bastards are only interested in publicity for themselves and nothing more. Their behaviour is NO different from that of the Casuals back in the day

I am concerned only with the reputation of Celtic FC. You say that you do not condone the behaviour of these cretins. If that is indeed the case then CALL THEM OUT.

I’ll take a wild guess at who these Brit-leftie bastards will be voting for in December’s general election…pound to a penny they will all be voting for Her Majesty’s Loyal oposition i.e Labour. As a socialist republican I certainly do not consider that a revolutionary act. Thes bastards are doing harm to the club we all love…well THEY don’t obviously, or they would not behave in their thuggish manner. Is it going to take one of our people being killed before they stop their nonsense. I have said it before and i’ll say it again…it is these bastards who are giving The Huns and the MMS ammunition to use against us.

Either we are Celtic supporters or we support the actions of the Green Brigade. We cannot be BOTH. Hail Hail

Don’t let the door hit you on the arse on your way out.
