Liverpool do some shrewd business in the transfer market

As you know I am always willing to help out the Fitba Fourth Estate.

I feel so sorry for them when they succumb to the intoxicating taste of seductive succulent lamb.

That contaminated fare can produce serious symptoms if unthinkingly ingested including delusions.

Some infected people sometimes see billionaires where none actually exist.

Of course, at the end of it all, there is no substitute for having good well-placed sources.

To that end, the intrepid chaps on the sports desks might want to contact Michael Edwards.

I understand that he is the Anfield club’s innovative sporting director at Liverpool.

I’m told that he was recently at some high-level Brexit get together for business types.

Now, my guy was in close proximity to him as he held forth on matters Brexit and the football economy.

I’m told that the chat around the table then developed about a player who Liverpool had allegedly valued at £1.8m that they had somehow managed to sell for over £7, with a substantial amount of that upfront in the initial tranche.

Not bad business that.

Apparently, Jurgen and his backroom team seemed quite sanguine about getting rid of a guy that might have attitude issues and anyway had little chance of breaking through into the first team.

Interestingly there were no other firm offers for the player in question just the club that shelled out £7m for him.

Now, although this comes from an impeccable source I can’t think of any player who would fit that bill.

So, if any of the Stenography Corps want to try their hand at journalism all they have to do is to contact the Anfield outfit and ascertain if Mr Edwards was at any such event recently.

For the avoidance of doubt, it would be a difficult one for them to deny given the number of people there including my guy.

Moreover, the transfer business chat wasn’t conspiratorially whispered in a corner.

Therefore, they can ask the Liverpool chap if he recollects any such transfer chat from the fine fellows seated around him.

I am sure that he himself didn’t say anything at all out of turn.

  1. I see that the Director of Fantasy, Mark Allen, has left the club by mutual consent.

Could this have anything to do with the purchase of a player for £7million that Liverpool only valued at £1.8 million ?

  2. I see that whinging Scouser is having a go at UEFA for limiting Europa Cup squads to just 22 players, 4 of which are home reared.
Perhaps UEFA could make an exception for the Ibrox club? Who are these people, asks Gerrard?
No doubt if the SFA had a hand in the matter they would immediately jump into action to sooth the tactical genius.
Those critical of Gerrard’s decision to sign winger after winger have been proved wrong with Jones and Kent sidelined for a few weeks and a plethora of replacements waiting to take their place. Forward thinking from the tactical genius indeed.
It looks as if Mark Allen is carrying the can for not shifting enough of Pedro’s duds which seems unfair as nobody is going to match their super duper Ibrox pay packets, never mind bringing in any significant transfer fees.
Whose going to pick up the mantle in the next transfer window?

  3. Great 3 points today…the type of game that in the last 2 seasons we dropped points in. My only grumble is the state of the pitch. Now I fully understand the economic reality of clubs installing this kind of surface. Surely the powers that be though, have a duty of care towards player and officials, to ensure that these surfaces meet a certain MINIMUM standard. I would have thought that the players union would be lobbying for change as players’ safety is being put at risk. HH

  4. If Liverpool were willing to settle for 1.8 million quid for Ryan Kent, it is indeed a poor piece of business on behalf of our friends at Ibrox. Can’t see Close Brothers being too happy with that. In fact, it could be argued, that the ‘Pool have pulled off the biggest robbery since Chelsea trousered over a million quid from the Celts for Tony f*****g Cascarino. I apologise to older supporters for even mentioning that useless muppet’s name. In order to understand my point, younger supporters should think Kyle Lafferty times one hundred. Aye, he WAS that bad. • Actually he wasn’t. As I recall he was a prolific scorer in England and he was top scorer in France the season after he left us. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out for a player at a particular club. Pukki? Brattback? Two that spring to mind right away.

      • Was only referring to his time at CP, Charger…don’t care one way or another, how well he may have played for others. In his time playing for the Bhoys, he made Wayne Biggins look like Maradona in his prime, FFS. Hail Hail.

    • Could be wrong here, but I’m sure I read somewhere that the liquidation of the old Airdrie is still going on and that must be over TWENTY years.

    • It took over 6 years to complete the liquidation of Airdrie. I would imagine that with the complications/skullduggery at the snake pit this one could run for a good few years yet.

  5. I think they bought Kent on the strength of his performances against us last Season.
The problems they have with that now is Lustig has been replaced by three new players who all have pace to burn.
We are also playing under a new Manager who is far more pragmatic in his approach.
Gerrard is even more clueless as to who will start or how we will set up in these games.
Lennon is far more adaptable than Rodgers proved to be.
He went into the last game thinking he would dominate the midfield and subsequently dominate and dictate play.
The reality was somewhat different as Scott Brown swaggered his way through yet another Dominant display.

    • You’re kidding yourself on if you think Neil Lennon is a better coach than Brendan Rodgers…. an average Celtic team beat a very poor The Rangers team…. a good Celtic team would have taken 5 off them…

      Reply
      • @Slugger
I never suggested he was a better coach though did I?
I made a statement of fact that Lennon is more Pragmatic in his approach and more likely as a result to alter the approach depending on opposition.
Like he did when he took a Celtic side to the last 16 of the Champions League on 40% less investment in the side.
Rodgers the one trick pony hasn’t been past the Europa League last 32 at 5 ATTEMPTS.
That’s 3 attempts with Celtic with 40% more investment and 2 attempts at Liverpool with a Transfer spend of £300m.

      • Bit unfair on Lenny, Slugger. The man stepped up and took over the team, at a time when we were all devastated that BR f****d off to Leicester City. Leicester City FFS. Personally, I was not a happy camper after the cup final, when Lenny was given the job on a permanant basis, and even less happy when we got horsed out of the CL. Amazing though, what a victory at the den of no equity, can do for the poor ould heart. Lenny is in the post and must be backed 100%…if not the other mob may take heart. HH

  7. I love those pictures of Whyte walking up Edmiston Drive with the adulation of the gullibles ringing in his ear.
Can you blame them when a national newspaper hailed Whyte as a billionaire with wealth off the radar?
Hard to believe that the purveyor of that particular story is still in situ despite writing an article with no factual basis whatsoever.

      Maybe Prime Minister???

  8. Kent is not worth 7m. He may be worth that in a few years but he is not a natural finisher for one thing. The valuation of 1.8m is probably right, and I would have put Candeias about that, given the amount of defensive work he did. A better player than Kent in his own half..How much did they get for him?

  9. well, the gnashing of teeth this week at Steve Clark, and some boardroom gnashing as well as they are made to swallow this purchase…..The considered “marquee” Scouse winger may very well be the final piece in the jigsaw. Alas not the joyous picture they are looking for.

I mean, there are some real home truths heading down the road to the big hoose! Firstly, ANY points ANY points dropped before the 29th of December, and if the champions capitalise on them we have could have a Stevie Rodgers situation on our hands. At the tail end of October heading for Guy Fawkes, we have Lazio at Home, Away to Aberdeen, Midweek home to St Mirren, Away to Hearts and Away to Lazio….. Now that will be our mid way marker. should Celtic come out of that 2 week spell with 9 or 7 points with European football qualification after Christmas in sight, then we are on our way. The Green and White Machine will take some stopping at that point.

Even with their new Magic Man, they’re only real difficult week is away to the Jam Tarts before a trip to the North of Portugal. They have a very homeward looking Sunday calendar of matches post European Excursions. Whilst I don’t think Livi will be a pushover this weekend, and given how Neil lFrancis Lennon has shown the rest of Scottish football, how to play and WIN against them, I fear they will not have the same resolve, and the men in the middle will have their fair share of “honest mistakes” I am sure.

It is imperative we get to December, with 3 points or more, ahead, where they face, The hearts, Aberdeen, Young Boys, Motherwell, Hibs ALL away before they come to the home of the Champions. Some mad rumour, they have is the played that way so Stevie G could force the boards hand to get Kent. If that is the case and he has cost them not just 8 and 9IAR, but starring down the barrel of 10, it sounds like he also just cost them an extra £6million with an extorted 20% sell on clause.

Mr Edwards, Big Mike, the Close Brothers, their friends in the north songbook, Steve Clark, NFL…..are just the beginning of the troubles for Mr Let’s Go, he just handed them the last nail – with a winger, Leeds thought was too much at £4million, pocket change.

The game is up the second they have “injury” complaints and “meee squad is thin, for the amount of games” – Nah mate, your time is up, you’ve got 51 players on your books, and signed almost 2 entire teams in the last two summer windows. You were on “karaoke, leave” (You heard it here first Phil, – in there with your Gumtree Galaticos! lol) BUT believe me Slippy, you’ll need more than the Scouse Scallywag to help you duet now !

  10. Hence, I was in the car earlier, when I heard the newsreader state that at some point in the future, “rangers” will command a fortune for him. My insurance company has accepted that I am not at fault for losing control of my vehicle whilst in the throes of laughter.

  11. I’m sorry but one point in this story casts doubt on the whole content. Liverpool did NOT receive ‘most of it [the £7M fee]’ upfront. They received circa £2M.

      • For that mob 2 quid would be a substantial fee. Remember Dodgy Dave is penniless…and swore that very thing, under oath, in a court of law. Not 100% sure that I believe his evidence. Can’t think why. HH
