British Minister Gavin Williamson has stated that the Brits are ready to put manners on the Chinese and the Russians.
No, seriously.
Now, this guy has been Secretary of State for Defence since 2017 so you would think he would have the lay of the logistical land by now.
The idea of Britain doing force projection independently on the world stage is a bit like Mr Bean doing cage fighting.
Of course, there was a time when deploying this “lethality” would have been entirely feasible.
That time was called the nineteenth century.
Back then the Brits were the Pablo Escobar of the high seas.
If you think that is far-fetched then Google “Opium Wars”.
Britannia really did rule the waves and those two conflicts (1839-1842, 1856-1860) happened either side of An Gorta Mór in Ireland.
Quite simply the British navy enforced the rule of a narco-state in the South China Sea.
The Qing dynasty was powerless to oppose a global superpower that was plundering the planet for resources.
These days the Brits have more admirals than ships.
However, they still have a need to pretend that it is still the 19th century on the ocean wave.
Consequently, the decision to build two aircraft carriers and equip them with the F35B Joint Strike Fighter has fascinated me for years.
It is a classic case study in the military industrial complex and I have been following this procurement clusterfuck for a decade.
This piece in the Herald by Robbie Dinwoodie from 2015 sums it rather well.
Mr Williamson also thinks that the Brits can give the Russians a slap.
The British were part of a multi-national collation that tried to strangle the Bolshevik state at birth.
They even used poison gas on the Reds to show what fine sporting chaps they were.
During the same period, the Brits used the same chemical weapons on civilians in Basra, a city in the new state they had created in the Middle East-Iraq.
Three decades later the white supremacist mass murderer Winston Churchill had no problem in getting into bed with Stalin and selling out the Poles in WW2.
In 2007 a Shia Militia, the Mehdi Army, evicted the Queen’s Boys from Basra Palace.
It was a shameful capitulation to an Islamist lynch mob who ran the city until the US Marine Corps established order 12 months later.
During their reign of terror, the thugs under the command of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr murdered scores of women in Basra for being insufficiently Islamic.
During this crime spree the Brits cowered in Basra airfield as part of the shameful deal with the Mehdi Army.
The British said they “providing overwatch”.
After their surrender in Iraq, the British Army then had to be recused from defeat in Helmand Province in Afghanistan by the 82nd Airborne.
So, in the 21st century that is two land campaigns against two poorly equipped militias, two defeats.
Therefore, I don’t think that the Russians have much to worry about.
In 2013 the current nutter in Moscow referred to Britain as “a small island no one listens to” and that was before Brexit!
The Brit political class and their commentariat in London didn’t take kindly to this basic truth being enunciated from the Kremlin.
Remember this was before the GRU Trip Advisor put Salisbury on their Novichok bucket list.
Of course, the Brits were powerless to respond especially as Putin has his guy in the Oval Office.
With all of this in mind, someone really should have a word with Gavin Williamson.
Here Simon Jenkins delivers the headshot to Williamson’s imperialist fantasy and it reminds me of the value of genuine evidence-based journalism.
For example, I cannot imagine the chap in the Guardian meekly agreeing to tell the world about a mystery billionaire benefactor simply because a press release said so….
