Mr Gerrard and the cost of failure

I can fully understand if Mr Gerrard is feeling a bit of pressure today.

My information is that the Sevco High Command has told him what defeat tomorrow will mean for this squad.

Quite simply if the champions prevail then players will have to be sold.

As reported earlier a dignified delegation had been dispatched to the Square Mile.

Sadly, they found no doors open to them.

Consequently, cash will have to be raised by player sales.

The reasoning in the Blue Room is that if the title race is over by tomorrow afternoon then there is nothing to be gained by holding onto sellable assets.

To that end, Señor Alfredo José Morelos Aviléz could be on his way out.

I’m told that Huddersfield Town is poised to put in a firm offer.

My information is that it is £6.5m rising to £8m with add-ons.

If the move goes through, then the South American will be the English club’s highest earner.

There has also been some interest from Cardiff City and Crystal Palace in the Colombian.

If the striker is sold, then the money will come in handy for sure.

In the week before Christmas General Ashley had his legal people serve papers on the basket of assets regarding Sevco’s imaginative retail operation.

That could prove very costly for the six-year-old club.

So, there is a lot riding on the result at Ibrox tomorrow.

Moreover, Mr Gerrard knows it.

  1. Poor show from the Bhoys on Saturday. Goes to show what can happen when several players have a stinker. Thankfully it doesn’t happen that often. Confident we have enough class and ability to put this one behind us and get back to winning ways after the break.

  2. No complaints about the result yesterday, just another abysmal away day performance. Couldn’t put two passes together.
Those moaning about the Morelos kicking out and stamping should man up.
Don’t they realise the SFA refereeing rule book has been rewritten to exclude any such actions from the petted lip as according to Madden the Columbian is ‘a little silly’.
3 separate incidents yesterday, one in the first minute, all of which could have merited a red card.
However Beaton, and his little helpers, followed Fleming’s rewrite of the rules to the letter thus resulting in no action being taken against the silly Morelos.
Would be useful if someone could put the 3 incidents together for a short video showing just how far the SFA has subverted it’s own rule book to protect Morelos at all costs.

  3. Morning Phil / all..

Where to start after that horror show yesterday !!

It does not happen often but Brendan got it badly wrong yesterday. He moved Celtic’s best attacking influence in McGregor to LB even though he had TWO replacements in Izaguirre & Hayes available to him. yes, move McGregor if you had NO replacement but to move him when said players were available was a massive mistake.

Scott Brown, who has bossed these games in the past sadly had probably his WORST ever game for Celtic and he should have been subbed at HT he was so bad.

Young Mikey Johnston……no comment required as it was not the young guys fault.

Brendan, you got so much wrong yesterday and trust me, we made them look much much better than they actually are so I am taking that as the only positive from yesterday.

A RB, CB and two strikers required in EARLY january please

    HH

    • From what I understand the HT substitutions were enforced, thus making tactical substitutions practically impossible. I spent most of last night telling sevconian friends, the season lasts until the end of May. When the highlight of your season happens before the New Year, the next five months can be very long. As Chris Sutton tweeted, or twittered, or some such feckin thing, “In Glasgow, second is last, and Rangers are STILL second!” Form is temporary. LIQUIDATION IS PERMANENT!!!

  4. Probably the worst performance of the BR era. The only consolation we can take from today is that we probably played as poorly as we can, sevco probably played as well as they can and it still took a deflected goal to beat us. In the great scheme of things it will prove to be no more than an embarrassing hiccup on the way to 10 IAR.

  5. I had a ticket for the game…but a heavy cold has precluded me from attending…My nephew will now represent the family…( He’s 36 and a big guy….no worries.)
    As for the game…
I played…managed…and coached at a decent level…and for me one big factor which hasn’t really been mentioned is…confidence.
I know from experience that if you don’t think you’re as good as the opposition…then this has a negative and draining effect on your performance.
That being the case…then the Sevco players are in for a hard time of it….because they know that,on our day, we are far superior to them….and it will show.
No fancy predictions from me….all I’ll say is….if we play to our best…we will win…comfortably.
    Onwards and upwards Celtic.

  6. There seems to be a dawning acceptance by their fans that Morelos will be sold in the window.
However the perception appears to be that the money raised will be used to fund a rebuild if Stevie G falls short this season.
What about the year on year losses, the £8m in transfer fees still to be paid for current players, King’s legal fees, Sports Direct potential legal action, repayment of the outstanding soft loans because more debt for equity swops will hardly satisfy those who have been digging deep to keep the lights on.
Hope everyone, fans and players, get home safely and 3 points will bring 8 IAR much, much closer.

  7. I wonder how many Chinese scouts will be attending tomorrow’s match to watch the grace and unparalleled performance of El Buffalo, with the intention of tempting him away from the bigotdome for astronomical sums of money… Nah – me neither!! Bidding starts at 50p, and with any luck, David Dickinson will be there to oversee the entire valuation process.

  8. If Morelos is sold, there’s a better than good chance Rangers won’t qualify for Europa League. By the end of December, Kille will be 2nd, Rangers will be 3rd with 39 points, while Aberdeen, Hearts, and St Johnstone will be right behind Rangers and within a game or two of overtaking them. And we shouldn’t discount Livingston or Hibs either. Truth be told, without Morelos, Rangers are a bottom half team in the SPFL. It’s been over 350 minutes since anyone else has scored for them, and they’re going to drop a lot of points if they lose Morelos in Jan and don’t replace him with a prolific goal scorer.

  9. There must be a feeling down govan way that even if their top guys turn up tomorrow the chances of beating our top guys are pretty slim. Without the help of the match officials they really have little chance of beating us. Surely slippy g has worked that one out for himself. They have struggled to get results against bang average teams for a while now. Surely a win for them would only gloss over the obvious lack of real quality in the side right now. Take out Morelos and McGregor and they are awful. The gullabillys who buy the tickets and the merchandise may be fooled by the gasl but Stevie G must see through it.
Celtic have the chance to send out a massive warning to the rest tomorrow.
We might have messed up in transfer windows and failed to progres in CL but we are still a cut above the rest when it comes to the bread and butter of the league.

  10. Not sure I agree with your report here Phil on victory being needed to save players being sold. It may be that is what they have told Gerrard and the squad but I don’t believe it. IMO, players are going to get sold in January whether they win the match or not and Gerrard would be a fool to believe anything else.

If there really is someone out there willing to pay 6-8M you suggest for Morelos, then they will bite the hand off the team that offers it. If they truly need the money, as everything reported points to, then then he is gone no matter the scoreline tomorrow.

    • Totally agree with everything you said. He COULD be a terrific striker IF he improved his attitude, IF he was more disciplined, IF he was more of a team player. Too many IF’s. In the lower English leagues, and I really can’t see him going higher than lower Championship, £6-8m is not money you will take a risk with.

      • Can guarantee Morelos won’t be sold in January, from a rugger guy in Manchester!
More worrying for Celtic is that as shown before Brendan dosent know how to rebuild a team.
