Hard sell Celtic

It really is a tale of two transfer windows.

During the last one, Celtic got some serious business done.

For example, they spent £10m on two key positions ( a keeper and a striker).

Now all is silent on the transfer front.

The official club positions often espoused by the CEO Peter Lawwell is that Celtic try to emerge from a window stronger.

With more points dropped to Livi this week, it is clear that the Hoops are now enduring a zombie season.

The only high point came when they won the cup from last season -a real pub quiz one for the future.

It is indicative of the current malaise at Celtic that the very idea of a player coming in at the moment seems quite silly.

The manager clearly has no long-term future.

Consequently, it would be folly for any competent board to trust him with millions.

However, I do not believe that the issues at Celtic are mainly in the dugout.

I’m aware that at least one possible replacement for Neil Lennon indicated his concerns about the CEO’s role.

Celtic have become a  hard sell.

Unfortunately, only one person can change that situation, and he only appears to respond to movements in the bottom line.

There is an event coming up rather soon that could impact on those numbers.

Season tickets are a substantial part of Celtic’s revenue.

Any dip in renewals would certainly hurt the beloved bottom line.

Now, the last time I had a season ticket at Parkhead; this guy was banging them in.

So I’m not in any position to lecture anyone who currently has paid for a seat that they can’t sit in on matchdays.

Season ticket renewal time tends to concentrate minds in most football board rooms.

The folk at Celtic need to think hard if it is worth the risk to do nothing.

I get the feeling that devoid of any viable plan, they’re just looking out of the window.

  2. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if a new manager is announced round about renewal time. They wouldn’t want someone to come in now and get off to a slow start. Season tickets could still take a hit if that were to transpire.

  3. Based on the review/non-review leaked (!) to the SMSM, it would seem that NL is indeed staying until season end.

Perhaps the only reason to keep PL in post for now, is to then punt him shortly before the ST renewal notices go out!

Or is that being too cynical…?

  4. Didn’t understand why they paid for a new keeper when they had Gordon on the books. Much cheaper to give him a better deal. He is still a class player as shown with Hearts.

  5. If son of DD is coming in he will come armed with funds as failure for him would be too close to home.
PL would stay for 6 months or a year to fully hand over The manager has to go and soon taking his staff with him.
PL & NL should not go at the same time however. Remember the great void of indecision when that came to pass at Old Trafford.

    • Fair points. The problem of Lawwell’s toxicity remains though as long as he stays in post. Unless Dermott Desmond can bring in a top manager – someone with the stature and ability that Rogers brought.

      • At what point does the penny drop that having an absentee Landlord who’s a Billionaire and has no desire to pump money into the Clumpany he controls is a bad thing for a Celtic PLC only interested in the profit Margins?
If it’s change you want then you first have to change that particular set of dynamics.
Otherwise the faces will change but the game remains the same.
That is …how much can I get and how quick can I get it.
Fergus walked out of Celtic with a £31m profit in 5 years.
And thus the Corporate game was put into play.
A fan controlled Celtic ie an actual Football Club would put an end to all the nonsense that has been witnessed before and since 2012.
        Change nothing?
        Nothing changes.

        • Billionaires should not be welcomed as owners at Celtic.

Asking for a sugar daddy is stupid. Celtic have by far the most income in Scottish football and should be run in a sustainable fashion without need for “benevolent dictators”. Having the most income should be advantage enough without the need for additional investment. Otherwise your club is a plaything of someone rich enough to walk away at a loss when bored.

Like you say, a fan run club is the only way forward and that is what Fergus wanted, but too many people sold out to DD and other profiteers.

        • Well said Duncan,Desmond is the problem, and his son will be no better..
Desmond is only interested in taking money out.
Not much difference between him and Dave King

  7. They might well be looking out of the window, if only the black out curtains weren’t in lockdown. If they let any light in, they’d have to face up to the shambles Lawwell, Lennon, Kennedy and Strachan have created.
